Spoonovic Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Per: Many sources. $50 Million seems reasonable, anyone agree?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 $50m/3 years for someone who was previously busted for PEDs and is tied to draft pick compensation? No way. Something in the middle, like 3 years/$45M would be suitable.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 The Jays made a good offer. Far more often than not, player's initial asking prices get knocked down considerably by the time they sign. If his starting price is $50M, I think with the added compensation pick, it's actually a somewhat legitimate possibility that he could return to the Jays for 3/39. Or offer him 4/40. There seems to be this idiotic notion in baseball where more years = profit, even if the extra years come at nearly no additional cost.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I think I would still sign him for 3/42. 50 seems a bit too steep and I am actually agreeing with what the Jays are doing here. If only they didn't trade Lind for Estrada I would be really happy so far with what they are doing.
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Wont be saying 3/50 is to much when we're watching the s*** show in the outfield and at the plate next season. I think this team is really going to miss the MelkMan.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 3/39M (Victorino deal) is a great deal for Melky
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Reasonable for what he will get? Sure. Reasonable for us to sign him and profit from it? No way. If its 3/50 I agree, but if its 4/50 I disagree
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Anything more than 13 AAV, he can get the f*** out! Nice analysis
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 At the end of the day, if a 4/50 deal is out there and AA is unable to reach that with Melky than that is a huge failure. Currently we are looking at starting Dirks in the outfield, plus Pillar is the backup plan for CF is Pompey is not ready. What we are looking at is having an outfield of Bautista/Pillar/Dirks. Thats downright awful. That is last place worthy
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 If its 3/50 I agree, but if its 4/50 I disagree Estas fumando sustancias alucinógenas? Simple math: 3/50 > 4/50
JaysRap Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 AA has always mentioned a little more per year is better than number of years... I hope that we could retain 3/45 and call it a day (which might also take into consideration the home town discount that was mentioned).
GNick49 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I'd hold at 13m...time to move on from Melky. Take the first round pick
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Per: Many sources. $50 Million seems reasonable, anyone agree? For 4 years yes, for 3 years, 0 chance.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I think $13-14million AAV is reasonable. if melky is asking for 3/50 then there is a chance that this can get done

Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 If it's 4/50 that's reasonable at 12.5...Jays should stand @ 3/39 with a club option. Yeah no need to overpay. His price should come down and if he is talking hometown discount then 3/39 seems about right.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Yeah no need to overpay. His price should come down and if he is talking hometown discount then 3/39 seems about right. Trouble is that even if he does settle for 3/39 it wont be with the Jays if there is middle ground at 3/42-43 than i hope Jays pursue it Thanks Zeeshan
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Good to see them far apart. Hoping he signs elsewhere soon. Time to focus on Martin. And what if we don't get martin either. What then, are you prepared for this lineup? because in the absence of Melky or Martin, this is what the lineup might look like Reyes (SS) Lawrie??? (3B) Bautista (RF) Encarnacion (1B) Smoak (DH) Navarro © Izturis/Travis (2B) Dirks (LF) Pompey/Pillar (CF)
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 and I guess our GM cant focus on more than one player at a time?
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Ugh lineup. I could live with whoever they plug in at 2nd if AA can shore up LF and sign Martin. If he doesn't sign Martin, AA best be getting both a legit LF & 2B.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 It's really hard to imagine Melky as a useful player 2-3 years from now.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I wouldn't be surprised if Martin 3 years from now > Melky next year.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 3/39M (Victorino deal) is a great deal for Melky agreed
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I wouldn't be surprised if Martin 3 years from now > Melky next year. I'd put money on Martin 3 years from now being > Melky next year.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I'd put money on Martin 3 years from now being > Melky next year. In a sport as unpredictable as baseball, it's hard to be that confident on two talented players, but I think it's a solid enough stance.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 In a sport as unpredictable as baseball, it's hard to be that confident on two talented players, but I think it's a solid enough stance. I feel like catcher defense is probably one of the most stable skills as players age. You can probably pencil Martin in for 3+ wins for the next 3-4 years.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I mean when the gap next year is projected to be 3+ WAR... Spanky owns Melky in the DDL and is just being a homer.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Nice analysis I agree with Spanky's analysis for once!
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Man, not eager to see the lineup without Melk. Get ready to get used to "bases loaded nobody out, no one ends up scoring" situations next year. That's if they don't get any "big bat" to replace him, of course.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Get ready to get used to "bases loaded nobody out, no one ends up scoring" situations next year. And if you looked at both sides of this you'd see that there's going to be a lot less of this next year. http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/r_INXdBvynIOJI.uUltdRQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTUwMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2013-08-02/b57c3d68-2e17-4e20-8b9c-a169f8701f56_melkythrow080213.gif
