jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I don't think years will be an issue with Melky. Won't demand anything more than 4-5 years so he fits the Blue Jays policy of signing free agents. The Blue Jays made him a decent offer and if Melky said he'd consider a hometown discount to stay in Toronto, then $39 M vs. $45 M shouldn't be a huge deterrent. Not sure he'd get $50 M - risky play there. What the Blue Jays offered was fair - even include some club options + performance bonuses if they have to sway him.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Won't demand anything more than 4-5 years Is that all? lol
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Is that all? lol lol, but yeah in terms of what AA and Beeston have said about not going more than 5 years on FA's, then Melky is the type of bat I could see them resigning based on those very reasons. We've seen AA before lock up guys like Bautista, and EE since they had success here and were great fits for the organization. Not saying Melky is on those levels as a player obviously, though I could see the Jays willing to go that extra mile on Melky since they are familiar with him and probably think he's a great fit with their current core. Whether its the best baseball decision or not, I'm sure they'd rather resign Melky over another FA outfielder at just a slightly cheaper rate and who might not be as good. I'm sure resigning Melky would be more of a PR play then anything - to show fans the Jays are willing to keep their good players etc.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 So if Melky wants 50 mil what does Cruz want Then? Yikes
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 So if Melky wants 50 mil what does Cruz want Then? Yikes Yeah I'd rather give Cruz $50 M to DH rather than Melky $50 M to play an awful LF.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I feel like Martin would be a better PR move. I'd rather sign Martin to a similar contract over what Melky is asking, agreed. The fact Martin is from East York is a terrific PR move. I'm sure there is more competition for Martin however.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 3/39 is a fair offer I wouldn't go any longer or any more..... 2014 was a contract year for him... if he signs a long term guaranteed contract, I suspect his play will take a downturn

Crazy Canucks! Lol

I don't think you have to worry about his effort level

Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 And what if we don't get martin either. What then, are you prepared for this lineup? because in the absence of Melky or Martin, this is what the lineup might look like Reyes (SS) Lawrie??? (3B) Bautista (RF) Encarnacion (1B) Smoak (DH) Navarro © Izturis/Travis (2B) Dirks (LF) Pompey/Pillar (CF) Cross Lawrie off that for 3/4's of the season because he's made of glass, we all know that deep down. And can u imagine if another starter were to go down the same time. OMG. Not nice.

Governator Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I like the Jays initial offer here. If they were to meet in the middle they take a small hit of < $2MM next year and afterward a ton of money comes off the books. I'd rather get it done and move on then ponder and get f***ed later.
LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 This contract works because it's not more than Bautista is making
bill Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 forget melky let some other team overpay. Jays got great value out of him while he was here.
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 The Jays have the 4th smallest guaranteed money locked up after next season, they can afford a 3 year deal to lock up Melky. Heck they offered him 15.3 for next year alone. If they can get it under 15.3 AAV on a 3 year deal they are saving money at this point. It's not like he's going to suddenly go Ricky Romero after next season. At worst an overpay for a DH bat in his 3rd season. Victor Martinez will be getting paid more than that when he's 40.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Why can't they just sign Aoki for 3/21 instead? That seems like a much safer and more practical use of money than overpaying for Melky. I mean, Martin would be the best option, but we all know that ain't happening.
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I thought Aoki is projected to demand 2 years, $16M? I like Aoki - cheaper, better defense, grinds out at bats, patient, gets on base, out him in the two spot & can fill #1 when Reyes gets hurt...with home run power from JB, EE - Aoki makes more sense if the jays get Atleast one more bat ie Martin
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Aoki would be perfect for this team IMO
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I REALLY want Jed Lowrie though... If we could sign 2 of Lowrie/Aoki/Headley I would be happy.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 $50m/3 years for someone who was previously busted for PEDs and is tied to draft pick compensation? No way. Something in the middle, like 3 years/$45M would be suitable. In light of the Martin signing, doing something like this would be fantastic. A 3-year commitment is VERY reasonable. Maybe a club option for a 4th. Then we're pretty much tweaking before the season. Maybe adding someone in middle relief, and someone like Headley for the INF. But with Martin and Melky, AA can be forgiven if he goes with Izturis or Travis/Pompey as starters I think.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Melky's offer is gone. Good bye Roid man!
BallsDeep Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Melky's offer is gone. Good bye Roid man! What do you mean?
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Melky's offer is gone. Good bye Roid man! I don't know why you seem so happy. This team is better with Melky on it then with what we currently have. I would have done a 4/50 deal for Melky.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 People don't seem to realize how bad Melky's defense actually is. The thing is, if Navarro gets traded, Melky can DH some of the time. He's in LF, so it's not like we need him to play CF or SS.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 His value doesn't increase going to DH. Ya but you know what you get with Melky. He hit consistently last year. Right now, we need an outfielder, and there aren't many great options, right? Melky isn't horrid in the outfield, he's just not as good as a Pompey. But most likely, Pompey won't be hitting as well as Melky right? In LF, I'd rather a better hitter in that slot. An all around great hitter would cost more than 12-15m/yr. You are talking 20m for a superstar player. Melky at 4/50 is a good signing for this club right now.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 What do you mean? Guarantee 3 Yrs/39M to 30's DH with roids problems isn't the best of the ideas. This team, a new focus team, believe in "Value (Win$$)" after Martin's sign. Sign Melky could be a "step back in the time"
