BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Pedroia has such an over exaggerated upper cut swing. Travis has one of the most level swing you could use and his swing is super compact. He shouldn't have slumps because of that and the fact that he literally uses the whole field. his spray chart is ridiculous. Love what Im seeing and who wouldn't...but small sample size. Looks like he will stick but I expect he will have regression and struggles. The way he is using the whole field is most impressive to me. His start has vastly exceeded my expectations....but then again last time I looked Gose and Lind were both hitting .400...early days.

Frank Menechino Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Travis' homerun to the 2nd deck in straight away CF really opened eyes as to how much power this guy has, it's remarkable for his size. He's ALL ass lol, probs squats >315 lbs
Governator Community Moderator Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Devon Travis is quickly becoming my new favourite Jay. If he just stays productive I'll be very satisfied. I love how he carries himself in interviews, he's so appreciative of just being here and loves this team. Others talk about passion, but he seems to really embrace it. It's something I've rarely seen from others on the Jays, probably because half the team doesn't speak English or just seem to not care at times.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Oh really? That's interesting. Link? http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/cleveland-goes-long-with-yan-gomes/ "Kevin Cash, after wrapping up his backup catching career in the majors, became an advanced scout for Toronto in 2012. On Oct. 31 of that same year — and just days before Cleveland and Toronto consummated their deal — Cash was hired to be the bullpen coach in Cleveland. Cash apparently gave a glowing report to general manager Chris Antonetti before the trade was made, which mlb.com’s Jordan Bastian explained late in 2012: “[Gomes] has spent most of his career behind the plate,” Antonetti said. “Toronto is an organization that is very deep, not only at the Major League level, but at the upper levels of the Minor Leagues, in catching. So Gomes did not have an opportunity to be a everyday catcher at every level. He had to earn his playing time and earn his at-bats, and he’s done that. “He’s got very good arm strength and he’s got soft hands. We have the benefit of Kevin Cash being on the staff. He’s very familiar with him from his time in Toronto and he really likes him behind the plate. Our professional scouts saw him in the Minor Leagues last year and really felt he’s got good, soft hands with a very strong arm with a good release.”"

I would LOVE more information on this. Easily the biggest scouting derp of AA's career.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Why does Keith Law hate Travis? I don't think he hates him. I just think he said something flip without really doing the research and since he'll never own up to it, he'll just have to deal with the constant reminders.

And he says that no women are portrayed as dominant characters; I haven't even read the whole of the first book but I remember that in the very first few chapters, Daenerys was already beginning to show "dominance" over Drogo, despite Drogo being portrayed as one of the strongest men in the story. The entire series is based on dominant female personalities. Who reads a 90s fantasy war epic set in the late middle ages, expecting a "progressive approach"? Such a f***ing tool.

Governator Community Moderator Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Yes 14 games, but already 4 HR and 1.0 WAR. HR are greatly skill based. "Non-prospects" are supposed to have 0 chance of ever achieving 1 WAR in their life. Travis has done it in 14 games. No one could possibly argue he is a NP. Pretty sure JPA produced like 1/4 WAR in his first game of the majors.

But it's 14 games. He looks legit though. But it's 14 games. Juan Francisco hit 9 HR in less than a month last year. Again, it's 14 games.

He definitely has earned "prospect" status regardless of how sustainable this is. Prospect doesn't mean "guaranteed to succeed", it just means "credible potential to succeed". Travis makes contact, Travis gets good counts, two of the things that Law himself identifies as the most important things to look for in a young player. Travis is a prospect. Maybe not one that Law particularly likes but a prospect nonetheless. Law's original statement was needlessly flippant and he deserves to have it thrown back in his face until he shows some intelectual honesty.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 From fangraphs a few days ago: "Selected by Detroit in the 13th round out of Florida State in 2012 — and the recipient of a nearly slot appropriate $200 thousand bonus — Travis dramatically outplayed his pedigree in the minors, largely on the strength of his contact and (it would seem) batted-ball skills. Those two qualities, in conjunction with his ability to play second base, conspired to earn for him a basically league-average projection before the season. Over his first 49 plate appearances, Travis has essentially retained his strikeout rates and batted-ball figures from the minor leagues while also exhibiting power. The projections and reason dictate that the latter two of those three variables are candidates for substantial regression. The collection of skills, however, still points to a league-average rookie season. A substantial accomplishment, that." http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/easily-digested-commentary-on-some-notable-debuts/ I've paid close attention to Travis a lot and I don't recall him having too much trouble on any pitches in any zone. Unfortunately the heatmap does not seem available for him on fangraphs.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Gose 1-2 count double against Tanaka. Bad sign!! They made a small tweak to his leg kick (almost removing it completely afaik) so I guess his new approach is working. I don't think he's THIS good, though.

Can you lose WAR you've already generated in a season? ie, is there a possibility for Travis to end the season with a WAR under 1.0?

Nafro Verified Member Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 I think Devon Travis will be a very similar player as Howie Kendrick. I drafted him last year in my keeper league and have always liked him. I think he will be a 0.300 batter, who will have a 0.750-0.875 OPS throughout his career. I see him being a second baseman who is a 15/15 or maybe even 20/20 player for HR's and steals. I thought this before he was traded to the Blue Jays and still think this. I don't feel that is unreasonable.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 1, 2015 Posted July 1, 2015 Man this trade looks really good: Travis: 1.4 fWAR. Gose: .3. And the Jays picked up Carrera from the Tigers as well as OF depth and he has put up .5, in a limited role of course.

I know some don't put much stock in intangibles but I like Travis's attitude and the way he plays in all aspects of the game. He seems legitimately humbled to be in the bigs and committed to doing whatever it takes to stay there. Gose is getting marginal numbers on D which surprises me - substantial regression on O and his issues with converting his speed into a solid SB success ratio continue.
JoJo Parker Dunedin Blue Jays - A SS On Tuesday, Parker was just 1-for-5, but the one hit was his first professional home run. Explore JoJo Parker News >
