"Need" and "WAR/WINS" in some cases, they go together. We need Wins, and for that you must upgrade some areas.

Point 1A: Reduce the PA of the below replacement level players.

Normal Team - assume there is some reasonable floor (like 1 WAR) to all positions and start improving Roster with that assumption.

Jays - Assume Ryan Goins will play 155 games and structure offseason to prevent that. Even if we have to trade everything for Brandon Phillips it is so much better than Ryan Goins that it will be worth it just to help everybody's mental health.

I understand what you're saying, but my point is what's more achievable in practice.

It's easy to upgrade 2B, because 2B for the Jays is crap. Mike Trout isn't coming here unless significant holes were created elsewhere. I know you meant it as just an example, but it isn't an achievable scenario.

Out of the scenarios that are achievable given the circumstances, 2B is much important to upgrade over anything else.

I guess I'm just concerned about the DH spot. It seems to me that Dirks+Francisco or something could be a negative as well.

Nope, I predict they move Buehrle. The more you think about it, there's not a lot of scenarios where they will compete next year given the budget implications. AA will have to get very creative.

Doesn't help that we have a 7.75m tied up in Ricky Romero. But Buerhle's a safe prediction especially with the emergence of Stroman and Sanchez. I would like V-Mart however, if we can fit a few of our needs with his same payroll I would be more inclined to do that.

I'm fully on board with the idea that you rotate the DH with your various aging and oft-injured vets. Getting 2 infielders and 1 OF (either Melky or someone else) allows for such a rotation.

You lose a pick with Melky too though. You lose the pick that someone would give you if they signed him and playing Melky on turf isn't necessarily more desirable.

Quite a difference between Melky and Martinez. Melky is 30, still in prime has 4-5 good years left, everyday player. Martinez is 36 and strictly a bat. Can't play him everyday on turf. In a couple of years he will be done or near done...while that first round pick should be top part of farm system.

Melky should be a DH at this point, he is not a good defender at all. By 36 he will need a wheel chair if he is still in LF.

Conoces a Big Papi Ortiz?

I honestly don't believe that's the case. You're not looking at someone with gaudy Bautistaesque numbers to begin with, so a much smaller decline will be much more noticeable with Melky. I'd be uncomfortable giving him more than a 3 year deal, as I think Melky at age 34 is not going to be a valuable player anymore (and I could see the decline starting as early as next season...)

Two years ago, we were praying for a miracle that some value could be salvaged from the Melky contract. Now that the miracle has actually happened, let's count our blessings and just move on.

If we assume both players are essentially DHs (and really anything else is a risky assumption to make), V-Mart is better than Melky. He's older sure but he's a more productive hitter and he's a hell of a lot more consistent too. That being said, I'm not really advocating signing either. I just don't think the assumption that Melky will be more productive and useful than V-Mart because he's younger to be a valid one. It would be one thing if Mekly actually played like he was younger, if he had mobility and athleticism but he doesn't and there's no point in pretending like he does.

We already have Reyes, Bats, and EE. Don't need more expensive offensive players like Melky or VMart, just solid 1-2 WAR players who are not liabilities in the field.

But I guess the marketing aspect is important too. Are the Jays leaking info on the FA's they are talking to, to gauge fan reaction and potential for ticket sales?

I think we all knew V-Mart wasn't coming here lol. I doubt he produces the same type of numbers he did this season moving forward.

68 mil for an aging DH that can't play the field in any capacity, yeah i'm glad we passed on this

Agreed. Especially when I think our best bet is to DH Reyes and get someone who can play SS.

Gaining financial flexibility only to blow it on a closer definitely reeks of Toronto baseball post-1993, and Miller is someone who will go with the highest bid.

This definitely scares me a bit.

It's only a matter of time until a Grilli/Miller/Robertson/Romo is a Blue Jay.

Miller 4/26M and Grilli 1/6.5M lol

We're screwed!!

It's only a matter of time until Grilli & Miller & Robertson & Romo are Blue Jays and they traded Bautista's salary for pennies on the dollar to make it happen.
