Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I don't like Melky for 3-4 years.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I don't like Melky for 3-4 years. melky will hit for 6 to 7 more years. He's a professional hitter. We got rid of our DH and Melky still has a couple years where he can play left field or split time. Melky at 3 for 39 or 4 for 50 is a buy imo.
TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I don't like Melky for 3-4 years. I don't understand this reasoning. Its not like he's 34 right now, and you're worrying about him aging badly into his late 30's. He willbe playing his age 33 year at the end of a 4 year deal. I hear things like 'body type' and what not, but what does that really mean. Just because one pudgy guy stopped hitting at age 32 doesnt mean Melky will. The PED issue should really be a non-issue, if they really believe he is off them. At least, he's been off them for 2 years, and it didnt seem to affect his ability in 2014. He's average at worst right now in LF, and I can see him slowing down there, but if you have to shift him to DH in the last year or so, thats not the worst thing in the world. Its not like hes playing a premium position like Reyes. Melky at 3 years is a no-brainer, and at 4, i'd still do it.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I say 3 years is the max i would offer him. Give him more AAV but i would not likely do more then 3. I think he gets a 5 year offer somewhere though.
Ehjays Verified Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I don't like Melky for 3-4 years. I'd be ok with 4 as long as there is still cash in the wallet to get an infielder.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I think the highest I would go is three years, but one or two is the safest. Unfortunately he won't do one or two years, so we have to hope for three. I think Melky is not coming regardless. Too many teams need offense. The only hope for the Jays is if teams are scared off from losing a draft pick.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 You guys can bet on how much of a discount he takes in the board's free agent prediction contest. Here: http://goo.gl/forms/2zOQbDEPgy

shortstop Verified Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I see Melk getting at least a 3 year deal & he likely prefers 4/5 though 4 is likely the max he'd get. With the DH spot open, Melk getting some time at DH will improve LF defence. I think the problem for AA is he doesn't want to commit too much beyond 2015 b/c he doesn't know what this team will bring in year 3 of "the plan". If 2015 sucks, he wants flexibility but if 2015 goes well, fixed contracts aren't an issue in that he can justify it with a good 2015 season. Personally, 3 years $36M-$39M - I'd sign him up, even 4 years $44M-48M. He worked his tail off last off season & my sense is he will continue to come into camps in great shape. That top 4 of the lineup with the Melk is deadly. All that said, I still prefer Aoki as the #2 man in lineup and the LF - much better defense & a guy who can wear down pitchers & get on base. Jays don't have enough of these guys in the lineup. Since this team has so many glaring needs, use the $$'s saved elsewhere.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 The steroids shouldn't be an issue anymore. The guy made a mistake. I'm sure he's learned how to avoid detection properly since then. Obviously, from seeing the au-naturel results in 2013, he can't go back to no steroids, but I'm confident he won't get busted again, as long as he's careful about his supplier.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 good thing Melky isn't a heavy player. He's damn close. The heavy player is defined at 3.25 pounds per inch. Melky is a questionable 5'10 and entered training camp at 215 pounds that is 3.07. We know regardless Melky has passed his peak age, we also know he isn't a hard working guy. To think that any deal for him has a small risk is just foolish IMO.

What are the other options for LF? The fact that they should be a win now team, and that Melky isn't that heavy like you said means maybe they should sign him. Also, I'd like to see those tables broken down by games played, do heavier players just get hurt more after 30? Then you start the debate as to whether Melky could become injury prone.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Unless Melky gives the Blue Jays a big discount it seems much more sensible to take the comp pick and sign Markakis and a pitcher (McCarthy?) instead. As much as people (I've heard a lot of this from the media) want to think he's the key to the lineup, he's ultimately replaceable and shouldn't be pursued at all costs.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I am down with signing the melk man to a 4 yr deal worth 13-14m per.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Not just injuries, but ability to play defence. I have zero faith that Melky will be able to play a passable LF in 2 years. I agree, but like I said, they are not building a team for 3 years down the road. So that should be less relevant. Not irrelevant, but not a big factor.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 I don't think the Jays have any plans to replace the DH position. They want to get Melky and Reyes off the turf so they will both likely DH atleast once a week if not more. If they resign Melky aren't they essentially replacing the DH position?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 M's to shop Michael Saunders at GM meetings
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 M's to shop Michael Saunders at GM meetings Saunders for Happ? Get a hitter with durability issues for pitcher with durability issues and shave a few millions?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 Saunders for Happ? Get a hitter with durability issues for pitcher with durability issues and shave a few millions? lol Happ > Saunders.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 lol Happ > Saunders. What about Estrada? He would be a better fit in Safeco anyways.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Author Posted November 7, 2014 What about Estrada? He would be a better fit in Safeco anyways. AA do it!! Lind for Saunders
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Saunders for Happ? Get a hitter with durability issues for pitcher with durability issues and shave a few millions? I'd be up for this. Either flip Happ or Estrada, and avoid having to waste a SP calibre arm in the pen. We have enough depth with Norris, Nolin, Sanchez, etc that we can part with Happ or Estrada.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Can't see Happ or Estrada getting it done, you guys certainly have wishful thinking.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 Man, just stick Chris Young in left for one year and hope his defense makes up for his bat. It would be cheaper and wouldn't cost an asset.
