Gonna be fun watching morons scream "Why didn't we sign him!!!" and not realizing it's because we have a deal with Vlad Jr in place

Pretty sure you'd tell Vlad Jr. to suck eggs if you can sign Moncada.

Isn't Vlad JR like only 15 or something? Moncada should be a stud, but even if we didn't have any deals with anyone next year. We aren't outbidding the dodgers/red sox/yankees on him.

Moncada is probably going to cost the equivalent of 15M / year over 6 years (or more) too, and regardless of how talented he is, still carries the same kind of risk all prospects do. I'm not sure it would make sense for us to do that anyway.

Yoan Moncada Video Against Top 2014 Draft Picks

Yoan Moncada played in a few different international tournaments as a teenager in Cuba. The last tournament he played in was the 18U World Championship in Taiwan in September 2013, when he was 18. There is now video available of Moncada’s at-bats against the United States in that tournament, a game in which he went 3-for-4 with an intentional walk and a strikeout facing three pitchers who went on to become top prospects in the 2014 draft.

In Moncada’s first at-bat, he shows off his speed with an infield single from the right side of the plate against against lefthander Justus Sheffield, who was a first-round pick (No. 31 overall) of the Indians in 2014. Moncada flipped around to bat lefthanded the rest of the game. After an intentional walk, Moncada lined an opposite-field single against righthander Jacob Nix, the Astros’ 2014 fifth-rounder who agreed to terms but never signed in the debacle involving Brady Aiken. Nix erased Moncada in their next matchup, getting Moncada to chase a 1-2 fastball above the strike zone for a swinging strikeout. In his final plate appearance, Moncada shows off his speed again with a bunt single down the third-base line against righthander Luis Ortiz, the Rangers’ 2014 first-round pick.

Moncada was the top prospect and the top performer on that Cuban team, batting .375/.483/.542 in 29 plate appearances over eight games. That Cuban junior national team, by the way, was loaded with some of the best young talent still on the island. Outfielders Victor Mesa, Julio Pablo Martinez and Luis Robert and infielder Randy Arozarena were all on that team. So was righthander Vladimir Gutierrez, who left the Cuban team at the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico earlier this month to pursue a contract with a major league team.

There are two other videos of Moncada from that tournament available, including a game against Colombia (1-for-2 with an opposite-field double and two walks) and another against Taiwan from the bronze-medal game, when he went 1-for-4 with an infield single and a strikeout.

Moncada, 19, is a free agent now and could sign with a team by the end of the month.

But is Vlad Jr. worth skipping on Moncada

But is Vlad Jr. worth skipping on Moncada

It would look bad on the organization to go back on their word. Even if they were to believe an international draft is coming, it's just not good business practice.

The real factor here though is that there's no way Rogers willingly spends 80M cash on a 19 year old.

The real factor is the Yankees have already exceeded the IFA cap and will outbid anyone save for maybe the Dodgers. They and others can only go 300 grand tops next season, the Birds will be signing more than Vlad Jr, next year. Book it!

Considering the team's financial position and what Moncada will cost I doubt he'll be worth it

Moncada is a generational prospect. He's been described as a switch-hitting middle-infielding Yaisel Puig. Guerrero is a peripheral consideration.

I wonder if there's a loophole that would allow you to trade for more IFA pool money even if you get max penalties imposed? Like sign Moncada, and trade for 3.5M in bonus pool space to sign Guerrero since you already agreed with him.

It feels like the Jays picked the wrong year to go all out. Even 2016 might be better with generational prospect Kevin Maitan as the top talent.

We can't compete for Moncada anyway so this is a pointless discussion. With tax, Moncada is likely go draw ~$60+ million I'd estimate. Rogers isn't shelling that money for a prospect, period.

Next year will be different.

Haha Ace, nice try, but no dice, I'm excited to see what we do next year, though.

If Rogers demanded a Moncada signing, AA would be signing him and not Baby Vlad.

That's my point. Baby Vlad isn't holding the Jays back from Moncada- the price is. Along with 25 or so other teams. It's not calling out Rogers, it's that the price is sky high.

No, the Yanks would outbid them, period.

Exactly. Baby Vlad isn't holding them back from Moncada, the money is. One is a top 10 prospect, one is 15 years old.

NO if they sign Moncada, then they're in the same boat as the Yankees, won't be able to sign anyone for over 300 grand. I think AA prefers signing multiple kids for 10 million rather then one at 10 or 40 million

Moncada kid is damn good, but YES, 70-80M is a big big money. Vlad Jr and 4 or 5 high ceiling high risk kid will be OK.

Question regarding these international signing is it the date they come eligible or the date they sign that matters ? Like if the jays said we will give you 10 mill more if you wait till after July 3 to sign!

Also do all international signing have to be Mlb contacts or can you sign them to a Milb contact as well?

(45M + 10M) x 2 penalty = 110M

Nice math so it would have to be over a five year contact!

Is it calculated all as salary even if the 10 mill is given upfront or at the time he gets to the majors? Like a bonus?

Or can a team use a loop hole and say we will sign you right now and upon reaching the bigs we will renegotiate you to a higher salary of no less then a extra five mill or so then if you sign!

Ex. Sign for 5 years at 4 mill, upon call up to bigs and after xyz amount of time or games we will automatically bump you up to 9 mill a year and extend the contact 5 years! Can one do that?

AA prefers having a job. I don't get why it's so hard to understand that Baby Vlad et all aren't the reason the Jays will not sign Moncada. Even if there was no sign of them blowing their wad July 2, they still wouldn't be in the conversation.

Rogers wouldn't approve an 80M dollar cash signing. Surely you can agree with that, right?

It's like some think AA has a choice between Moncada OR Baby Vlad +++. He doesn't.
