ace3113 Verified Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 (edited) This has to be a no-brainer for the Jays if he has, right? The team needs a second baseman, and the best second baseman not yet in the MLB, and one of the top hitters in Cuba becomes available? http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/cuban-second-baseman-jose-fernandez-whereabouts-unknown/ Whereabouts Of Cuban Second Baseman Jose Fernandez Unknown Jose Fernandez, a star second baseman for Matanzas in Cuba, has not played recently in Cuba and his whereabouts are unknown, according to his manager. Fernandez played in a Serie Nacional game on Friday, but after Matanzas was off on Saturday, Fernandez didn’t play in games on Sunday and Monday. Matanzas manager Victor Mesa, who also manages Fernandez on the Cuban national team, said Fernandez and catcher Lazaro Herrera, who is a cousin of Fernandez, are both absent from the team for unknown reasons, according to Giron, a Matanzas media outlet. No further official word has come from the Cuban government on the status of Fernandez or Herrera. Baseball America has not been able to confirm whether Fernandez or Herrera are still in Cuba. Fernandez, 26, ranked as the No. 3 player still in Cuba last month and would be in high demand if he ever left the island to pursue a career in Major League Baseball. A lefthanded hitter, Fernandez is excellent bat control and plate discipline with occasional power, producing a .326/.482/.456 line in 314 plate appearances during the 2013-14 season, good for second in the league in OBP. During the 2014-15 season, which started in September, Fernandez is hitting .315/.415/.426 in 65 plate appearances. Edited October 16, 2014 by ace3113

ace3113 Verified Member Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 Yummy....we have no cash. Kickstarter campaign?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 A 2nd baseman with great contact and OBP skills? Its almost too perfect a fit for the Blue Jays..
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Think he's got enough time to get residency and clear all the paperwork to be declared a free agent before the start of the 2015 season? I'm not too clear on how long that typically takes, but he's got to be cutting it close at this point... Would be a guy I'd be upset about letting get away, fills a present need and is entering the prime of his career...
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Didn't know he was still that young, AA should be all over him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Didn't know he was still that young, AA should be all over him. Absolutely ideal solution For once, for the love of God, pay what it takes The fit couldn't be better. He's supposed to be an excellent defender right?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Why would we be interested in a player who costs money and actually knows how to take a walk? Good point Yankees sign Fernandez AA counters with: http://disciplesofuecker.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/rickie_weeks.jpg
Chappy Community Moderator Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 What's the point, we all know he isn't in play for the Jays. With Izturis due back I'm sure AA has already penciled him into the starting lineup.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted October 14, 2014 Author Posted October 14, 2014 Looks like a perfect fit for the Yankees too post Cano.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Literally couldn't be a better fit than the Jays. Jays are said to be looking for more contact and OBP and 2B is their biggest need. If there was ever a time to overpay for a guy this would be it.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 AA won't do jack s***, he'll be too busy pretending to go after relief pitchers while in reality scarfing down gyros and doing nothing.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Is he related to this Jose Fernandez? http://media.cmgdigital.com/shared/lt/lt_cache/thumbnail/960/img/photos/2012/09/11/54/a7/062812-spt-fernandez-4.jpg
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted October 14, 2014 Posted October 14, 2014 Send in a sea otter to pick him up! So he doesn't have to swim as far! Then it's a direct flight to Canada to have him screeched made a newfoulander and he is ours!

kgm1 Verified Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Obviously he would be a good fit for the Jays but also for several other teams . I suspect the Yankees will be in on this. White Sox and the Marlins may want to step up. Personally I see the Yankees overpaying.

With Izturis due back I'm sure AA has already penciled him into the starting lineup. We need a legit starting 2B ONE of Kawaski or Izturis should on the bench, along with Valencia. Goins shoud be in AAA (I know you know all this and that you were being sarcastic)
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 This guy presents fans like me, who follow the team closely, with some clarity. AA doesn't want to trade too many farm assets for MLB-ready players. I get it, especially after the Miami and Mets trades. This last season, for deadline purposes, AA said the only trades available were ones that created holes on the current roster. I get it, don't make those trades. But here is a guy who, I presume, will be declared a FA and not need to be drafted. Nor will he cost players of any type. Just money. AA and f***ing Beeston have maintained that when the opportunity is available, money will be available. Well, in my mind, here's that opportunity. If AA doesn't win this bidding war, then I am officially convinced the Jays admin has been lying and is not really trying to win. Heady stuff.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Signing Fernandez would mean no K-Rod, Oviedo, and Weeks. No thanks. /Alex.

I was convinced after last off season and again in July. But your right , he seems like the fit we need and the Beast is still saying the budget will go up. Sign Melky, Fernandez, Andrew Miller and trade for Wade Davis.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_Screech Thanks for the clarification. I am now definitely convinced Blueballs was drinking some screech
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I think most Cuban defectors would be pretty reluctant to come to Toronto, as the border crossings are going to be a huge hassle while their citizenship is still in limbo. Justin Turner is the guy we should be going after.

Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 the Jays should start a Cuban contingent to compete with the strong Dominican group already on the team Sign Thomas (to play LF) Fernandez (2B) and some bullpen pieces these free agents won't cost draft pick compensation Hoping, but I know Rogers won't kick in to upgrade (or maintain) team

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Are there any good articles on how to translate Cuban stats? If not that could be a good one for Jfas to write about.
