GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Weird situation how a sparingly used RP needed TJS. Anyone have any idea how it could've possibly happened?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Weird situation how a sparingly used RP needed TJS. Anyone have any idea how it could've possibly happened? Someone in another thread pointing out he was ridden very hard in a short period just before the injury. Can you suddenly blow out your arm like that or does there need to be a pre-existing condition and would such a condition make the TJS just a matter of time? It's a pretty murky area. I don't know if anyone really truly undersands what causes TJS even the doctors. Efforts to reduce pitcher injuries certainly don't seem to be yielding results.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Who knows? Maybe asking a 1-inning guy to throw 46 and 47 pitches in outings had an impact. I mean, there must be a reason why none of Janssen, Santos, Delabar, McGowan, or Cecil have thrown more than 31, right? Or maybe it has nothing to do with it.

Can't prove direct causation but it certainly looks careless in hindsight. It's a shame. Some pitcher have the MLB upside of cannon fodder but Wagner seemed like he could be a legit late inning guy. He deserved a better fate.

Throughout his pro career, it hasn't been uncommon for him to have gone more than an inning an appearance.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 Odd coincidence that those "abusive" appearances are right in the middle of arm problems. Wouldn't that make them all the more abusive?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I'm not really a believer in tying TJS to specific outings and their pitch counts. Pitchers get hurt. His elbow was probably always going to break.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I remember when Texas was telling people they were doing it wrong with pitch counts and protecting innings. Akwardly they're entire pitching staff blew up this year. A guy I'm shocked still hasn't blown up is C.J. Wilson. He went from being a closer to throwing 200 innings every year. Hes been pretty s***** this year though. C.J. Wilson will only blow up when a team bunts the entire game. He will get so frustrated his head will explode.

He'll be a shutdown closer in 2016. Book it. After the jays cutting his salary 6k out of spite, as mentioned in the article above, not surprised he bolted.

Rays made this deal as a high-risk/high-reward deal, considering they have no money to sign major free agents this offseason with payroll cuts coming.

They have to catch lightening in a bottle a lot more than other teams and Wagner is a good risk for them. He's not a bad pitcher and they got him for a good price.

But for a guy that throws that hard..... he never blew it by many guys.
