Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 If Mayberry Jr isn't retained for a platoon with Lind, I'd like the Jays to try and acquire Montero from the Mariners, he's fallen out of favour in Seattle, first the weight issue at camp, now this.... Fri, Aug 29 The Mariners have shut down Jesus Montero for the remainder of the 2014 season as they want him to address his non-baseball issues. Advice: There was a verbal altercation on Thursday night between Montero and one of the team's scouts as Montero was on a minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Everett. Allegedly, the scout poked fun at Montero's lack of hustle and sent an ice cream sandwich into the dugout for him, and Montero attempted to take a bat into the crowd to confront the scout. While he's a supremely talented hitter, until he clears up the personal issues he simply won't make it at the big league level. More: Bob Dutton on Twitter (Rotoworld.com) He'd be a good get on the cheap, yes, I know about the limited versatility. I agree. As for that incident, that was completely unprofessional by the scout as well. Both totally deserve to be punished for that.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Mayberry is a solid acquisition if utilized properly. Platoon him with Lind next season and use him as a PH.

Problem being Lind should be no where near this team next year, unless he agrees to having a personal trainer assigned to him and that he listens and does what he says or goodbye and contract void!
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Fwiw, the scout denied the allegations of what he did. I guess the ice cream thing and heckling was just all dreamed up.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 The scout's full of s***, trying to save his job. The team knows, it had to make it to the dugout. Was listening to mlb radio and Jim Bowden, the ex-GM said that same scout worked for Jim as a cross checker, and it wouldn't surprise him in the least if it were true. He basically said the guy was good at his job, but was a giant douche.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 wtf, where was this a month ago when it might of made a difference? This. Can't see how this will make a difference with 5.5 games back and barely 30 games to go. On another note, I'm in some resort in the Caribbean relaxing right now, not that it has anything to do with this thread.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Basically, you need to hit well for a lot more PA's than what Mayberry Jr. has against lefties to be considered an actual platoon bat. Example: Adam Lind. Lind has hit very well against RHP for more than 2700 PA's, therefore he should be considered a good platoon bat against those pitchers. Excellent. So we can all wait until Mayberry turns 70 for him to get the requisite number of AB against LHP to make an informed statistical decision. Or we can look at his stats now, conclude that he is a pretty good hitter against LHP and use him as a platoon bat and hope we're right. I swear, sometimes you stat guys throw all logic out the window when it comes to these things just to prove a point. There's no way Mayberry is going to get 2200 PA against LHP. There's a pretty good chance he doesn't get 2200 total PA before he's out of the MLB. So if you're a stat head going to AA with this unregressed not enough PA nonsense, you're going to get fired for wasting his time. Regress the f***ing thing, then come up with the same yes/no decision as the person looking at his career splits - that there's a good chance he can make a good platoon partner, although past results may not be indicative of future performance.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Yeah, no s*** you regress it lol. If someone wants to do that cool but I'm not. It's John Mayberry Jr.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Our new Adam Lind but different?
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Not a bad move. He's under control, not horrible stats so I guess we'll see especially since he was acquired for a no name prospect. Watch this be the excuse AA uses to not resign Melky. "We got a solid replacement for him. We think this guy, who we've been keeping an eye on and tried to get a lot, will be just as good and cheaper!"

If AA doesn't bring back Melky he will have to make a big splash at another position, otherwise the casuals will have their pitch forks out. Probably rightly so.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 What is the number of PA's vs a lefty when the numbers become relevant? According to that fangraphs article it is 1000.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 According to that fangraphs article it is 1000. There's only 149 RHH in the history of baseball to have that many PA's vs. LHP So what's the point of talking about platoon splits if you're talking about some of the better players of all time
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 2, 2014 Posted September 2, 2014 Always relevant, just changes how much you need to regress to the mean. True Split = (PA/(PA+1000))*Split + (1-((PA/(PA+1000)))*LeagueAverageLHBSplit So basically you take about 23% of Mayberry's number, 77% the league average. I dunno, it just seems like a very crude way to do things. There's some predictability basis to this?
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted September 3, 2014 Posted September 3, 2014 If AA doesn't bring back Melky he will have to make a big splash at another position, otherwise the casuals will have their pitch forks out. Probably rightly so. Melky seems to like Toronto and it might only take a modest raise. We'll see. I want him back. He seems to enjoy it. Like you said if they let him walk, AA will have to do something to make up the offense that will be gone. If not the rage will be unleashed.
