Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Move for next year? Goodbye Colby
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Please share. Platoon splits aren't reliable until a large number of PA's.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Guys, you're just talking. Talking, "la-la-la-la", like this is business as usual. It's not. Basically, you need to hit well for a lot more PA's than what Mayberry Jr. has against lefties to be considered an actual platoon bat. Example: Adam Lind. Lind has hit very well against RHP for more than 2700 PA's, therefore he should be considered a good platoon bat against those pitchers.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I can't have this discussion. You seem like someone that's had an account on here before, were you not around when we acquired Danny Valencia?

What is the number of PA's vs a lefty when the numbers become relevant?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 What is the number of PA's vs a lefty when the numbers become relevant? Correct me if I'm wrong GD, but around 2200 I believe.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I can't believe I wrote this article a couple of years ago: http://extrainning.thevarsity.ca/2012/03/22/the-next-michael-morse/
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I can't have this discussion. http://www.breakingblue.ca/2014/01/16/blue-jays-true-talent-offensive-platoon-splits/ About 2200 PA's are needed to know a true talent of handedness. So Mayberry may not be (likely is not) a true talent 130 wRC against lefties. But I think we can say that he's better against lefties than Francisco, Lind and Gose. The biggest part of this deal is the Mayberry's I believe will become the first father/son to play for the Jays. And we can hear Buck talk endlessly about his best friend and long time teammate John Mayberry Sr. Shoot us all now!

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Anthopoulos needs to change his strategy to only acquiring small and weak players, so that we don't have to hear the term "big and strong" from Tabler ever again. Those guys are described as "scrappy, knows how to play the game, is a baseball player, does everything that he's asked" etc.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 http://www.breakingblue.ca/2014/01/16/blue-jays-true-talent-offensive-platoon-splits/ About 2200 PA's are needed to know a true talent of handedness. It must be total PA's because there's only 2 RHH in baseball history to face lefties 2200+ times. And we can hear Buck talk endlessly about his best friend and long time teammate John Mayberry Sr. Shoot us all now! I believe you. When acquiring players now there has to be some side story to every guy, it's f***ing lame.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Guys, you're just talking. Talking, "la-la-la-la", like this is business as usual. It's not. Lmao. I just realized this was a Moneyball reference.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Does he have options left?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 So if they got Mayberry Jr. to platoon with Lind, what the f*** did they get Valencia for? Seems like AA is now obsessed with platoons...
Key22 Verified Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Melky, Rasmus, Lind could all be gone next season. Mayberry is the insurance policy depending on whoever is not retained and could be the starting LF or back-up outfielder or DH. Jays can;t sign free agents so they will have to find some scrap off the garbage dump and hope somebody is lightning in the ole bottle. That's the Jays for ya - always hoping someone will fluke into actually turning out to be a good player. Fingers crossed and a lot of hope.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Will the Jays add Domonic Brown next lol?
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 People assume hes here for platoon purposes. Honestly I don't see the purpose of him. Danny Valencia has faced both lefties and righties and hes been pretty much the everyday third baseman so he doesn't effect Lind at all. It doesn't really matter as the season's over anyway. I hope he doesn't take at bats away from Pillar and Gose though. I'd rather those 2 get playing time. I'm assuming he'll get PH AB's.
Slider Verified Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I don't mind this move. The Jays get rid of a crappy prospect for a decent MLB player. Let's see how this works out.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 So if they got Mayberry Jr. to platoon with Lind, what the f*** did they get Valencia for? Seems like AA is now obsessed with platoons... I realize this is only opinion, but I think now I have AA sort of figured out. He's so far over his head and nothing he did worked. So now he's looking at successful organizations and trying to copy them. First he started with the Red Sox and his attempts to bring in character guys and moving prospects through the system slowly. Then he tried the Dave Dombrowski/Pat Gillick and the huge splash trade. Then it was St. Louis and their usage of pitching prospects in the pen. Now it's Oakland and TB and their use of platoons (which may not be the case it might have much more to do with their inability to hit lefties early in the season). Of course all along the way he forgets about the most important thing to copy from many successful organizations is that you need to extract maximum value.
admin Site Manager Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Holy s***. Long time no see. Yeah, busy as s*** right now. On the road a lot, took a new job, while starting a new online business as well. So I have no time for anything right now.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Platoon with Gose in CF? Mayberry in Cf would be an abomination. In case of emergency ... Yeah, but he's a corner OF/1b

AA has applied to MLB to play with an expanded roster all year. He is crying the NO free agents want to play in Canada on turf and the canadian dollar is falling so the jays need to use platoons at many positions .
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Mayberry in Cf would be an abomination. In case of emergency ... Yeah, but he's a corner OF/1b Does he have any options left??? He'd be great in Buffalo as depth next year but I'm guessing we got him cheap because the Phillies has used them all up? Edit: He is out of options http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/out-of-options-2014.html
kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 AA is still praying to play some meaningful games in sept so instead of selling like he should have he buys a platoon bat. Dickey, Rasmus, Janssen, and others should have been pushed hard to make a deal.
