Okay, I may be jumping the gun here, but if we do make a trade with Detroit, then what do we do? Does that mean Smoak is set at 1B and EE at DH? I still don't think Smoak will cut it. It might be pretty good to have Reyes DH ~ 20 games throughout the year to keep him fresher, and it would improve our defense with whomever replaces him. This is where it would still be good to have Lind.

I wonder is A-Rod can still hit. Could be the perfect DH. Yanks may trade him to us for nothing, and eat 99% of his contract.

Having said that the President of the team made it clear that they would be under last years payroll

Beeston guaranteed they'd payroll would not go down

a) We're probably not gonna make a trade with Detroit. Blair isn't a source.

B) I'm not entirely sure, but I'd assume that A-Rod has 10-and-5 rights by now; not only do I not see the Jays wanting anything to do with A-Rod, I don't see A-Rod approving a trade to Toronto, especially because f***ing with the Yankees probably entertains him at this point.

I believe they mentioned about keeping some money alive for the trade deadline at the state of the franchise. So i guess we'll have to wait until the end of season to see if they were lying or not, Beeston will be gone by then though.

If Smoak hits his Steamer projections, he should be fine (or at least playable). For whatever it's worth, this career road numbers are almost exactly his Steamer projections, so it's not far fetched (especially when you consider the number of extra games he played in Oakland and Anaheim). If he sucks, we can rotate guys through the DH and probably get similar production. Really not a big deal.

As for A-Rod, he has 10/5 rights. Who knows if he'd even be willing to waive them to be a DH. He might prefer to sit back and tick off the Yankees lol. If he was willing to, and the Yankees paid all but like 1M, maybe.

We've got three new players on the team, in Donaldson, Smoak and Saunders, who's teams all played 108 games at Safeco, Oco, Minute Maid and Anaheim last year (park factor ranks of 23, 21, 18, 26). Martin is also coming from a similarly poor offensive environment in PNC Park, which ranked 24th last year. The dome, in comparison, was the 6th ranked offensive environment in 2014.

If I'm AA the last moves I make to finish the offseason are:

Trade Navarro + Goins to the Athletics for Clippard + Sogard

- there were rumors the A's were open to flipping Clippard. I'm not sure about Voght behind the plate. I like him more at 1B and I think a Navarro/Phegly pairing could be effective. Clippard could very well become jays closer. A's have zobrist at 2B, semien at SS and Brett at 3B, putting Sogard to a bench role. I think Sogard is a better starting option for the jays than goins, likewise I think goins could be well used on the A's bench. Jays upgrade both pen and 2B in this deal.

Sign Matt Lindstrom - 2 years 7 mil.

- Soriano and K-rod are boras clients. Don't see either coming to toronto. Same goes for joba. Next best arm available is lindstrom.

The A's are the type of team that don't have Ryan Goins on their bench because, well, he's not very good. Why would they trade for him?

Eno Sarria has us third in SP depth in this article: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/piggybacking-with-the-giants-starters/

Wow here I thought what heck JFaS is steering me wrong when it opened at that first graph! Lol

So question what is the reason or the factoring difference between war and war/200 that causes us to improve to 3 in the standings?

If Estrada is the #5 starter and Sanchez is in the pen, like I expect, then the team's SP depth is Norris, Hendriks, Francis, Oramas, and Redmond (as the swing man/long reliever). Am I missing anyone?

Maybe Chad Jenkins if he doesn't make the bullpen out of spring training. Otherwise, Matt Boyd isn't on the 40 man but he could force his way into the conversation if he picks up where left off last year. Otherwise, it should be noted that both Hendriks and Redmond are out of options so you have to figure only one of the two will act as a long reliever/swing man and the other will get traded or become a short reliever.

I'm guessing they will try to sneak Hendriks down to Buffalo towards the end of ST. Might be a risk to get claimed but if it's late enough in ST, he should slip.

I hope they don't view Redmond as a short reliever

I edited my original post to add a mention of Jenkins.

I think the organization has given up on Jenkins as a starter. He's likely a reliever for good now, at least as long as he's with the Jays.

My guess is....

Rotation: Dickey, Stroman, Hutchison, Buehrle, Estrada

AAA Depth: Norris, Hendriks, Francis, Oramas, Albers

So that's probably how the depth stacks up. Not terrible, but could use another pitcher closer to Norris' level.

I don't think Estrada will be in the rotation. I think it'll either be Sanchez or Norris (whoever has a better spring).

We have a near elite closer named Brett Cecil.

Via FG Depth Charts:

1. Chapman 2.6

2. Kimbrel 2.2

3. Holland 2.0

4. Jansen 1.7

5. Miller 1.7

6. Uehara 1.7

7. Robertson 1.5

8. McGee 1.5

9. Betances 1.4

10. Davis 1.4

11. Perkins 1.3

12. Cecil 1.2

13. Melancon 1.2

14. Boxberger 1.2

Does this take into account he's only facing leftys? Last I checked, right handed hitters bat occasionally in the 9th.

are you aware how much better he was against RHH last year (only 15 pitchers in all of baseball struck out a higher percentage of righties last year)? And that he faced 50 more righties than lefties? Do you know that split stats are searchable?

He faced 143 RHH last year with a 2.40 xFIP.

why is Brett Cecil's ability still in question

Its not

Cecil is going to pitch 160 innings this season according to most here, because he is the jays best middle reliever setup man and closer. any time you question the jays relief depth, the quick answer brett cecil comes back.

I honestly haven't read one person saying Brett Cecil will be a middle reliever this year.
