SAAviour Verified Member Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 How about a thread to list players the jays should have claimed but clearly won't because Rogers decided to cheap out when it mattered most: Josh Beckett, Dodgers — Owed a much more reasonable $4.73MM (as of Aug. 5), Beckett is a more desirable commodity for interested parties. However, he’s currently occupying a slot in L.A.’s rotation, and he’s produced a surprisingly excellent 2.88 ERA with 8.3 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9 in 112 innings this season. The contending Dodgers don’t seem likely to deal from their rotation depth. The loss of Paul Maholm to a torn ACL has already weakened their rotation depth. I'm certainly not a fan of Beckett but for 4.73 mil he could have helped....not that the dodgers would have let him go, but at least claim and try.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 MLBTR keeps an updated list of players who have cleared waivers here: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/08/players-who-have-cleared-revocable-waivers.html
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 If we plan to make the post season (nervous/embarassed laugh) we should preferentially pick someone up who has cleared waivers, and make the trade/deal before August 31, so that they're post season eligible.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Interesting that Kemp was claimed by nobody, despite his torrid week that gave a flash of his old power hitting days.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 You're both speaking about it incorrectly. If someone is claimed, and the team who put him on waivers wants to try to work out a deal with the claiming team, they don't pull him back then. They try to work out the deal with the claiming team over the next 2 days, and if they don't get a deal done, THEN they can either let the claiming team have the waived player for nothing but the contract assumption, or pull him back and keep him (and no other team can put in a claim). There you go making sense again It's a funny system but impoirtant to understand how it works. AA has even said he wants to add someone in August.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Gnarls, I wouldn't count on anything AA says. Maybe by someone he meant another AAAA player.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 He needs to replace the PED suspension. LOL hoping not
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Chase Utley for Sanchez and Romero
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 LOL hoping not I really think it's Valencia. He was originally named (and cleared) but MLB loves to witch hunt those that were cleared. He's Braun's former college roommate, he's best friends with Chris Perez (clear case of bad judgement). Gaby Sanchez is my other guess
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 1. Cubs claim Jacob Turner on waivers 2. Cubs Designate Nate Schierholtz For Assignment
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Maybe we will be the only team not to make a claim. That will be exciting.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Phillies ace Cole Hamels has been claimed by an unnamed team on revocable waivers, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). The Phillies will have 48.5 hours to work out a trade with the claiming team or pull Hamels back on waivers. Of course, if Hamels was claimed by any club other than the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Dodgers, Cardinals, Braves, Padres, Rangers or Yankees — all of whom are on his no-trade clause — he would have the right to veto the deal. As Rosenthal notes, the Phillies may prefer to wait until the offseason to listen to offers on Hamels, as they’ll be free to negotiate with multiple clubs at that time rather than the lone club that has currently placed a claim on Hamels.

Rogers will offer a 2 year pay as you go plan to all phillies employees and a used clam shell phone.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Doesn't the entire NL get priority over claims for Hamels and therefore making the Jays like the 5th last team for priority? Yes

Weird no-trade list. Anyone has an idea as to why his list is...bizarre?

GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 J.P. Ricciardi scouting report on his no-trade list: "Can't handle the big stage. Doesn't want the pressure of a large market. Probably doesn't even like baseball."
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 You may be misreading it, which is understandable, as it's written all backwards-like. The listed teams there ... they are the ones to which he can be traded without his consent. All the other teams in the league are on his no-trade list. So he can be dealt to the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Dodgers, Cardinals, Braves, Padres, Rangers or Yankees without his consent. Basically, all the large market, successful(ish) teams ... plus the Padres (he grew up there). You're right. Players routinely populate their no-trade list with the teams who are most likely to be interested in them, since it gives them leverage. Players sometimes get extra $$ to agree to waive their no-trade clause. There's no reason to list bad or small-market teams that will never be interested in you. (I edited this post... I initially read the blurb wrong too, it's written poorly)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Are there CBA rules about how many teams can be on a no trade list?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted August 6, 2014 Posted August 6, 2014 Are there CBA rules about how many teams can be on a no trade list? No, the player and team can agree to have any number of teams on a no-trade list. There may be an official date each year on which each player has to submit their list, or that may be variable too.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2014 Posted August 11, 2014 Royals acquire Willingham. Cleared waivers, according to Kenny No idea how to post tweets. Would love to know how
SAAviour Verified Member Posted August 12, 2014 Author Posted August 12, 2014 @JimBowden_ESPN: The Royals have acquired Josh Willingham from the Twins for pitcher Jason Adam according to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN I click on the tweet, then copy it, then paste it. Seems to work.
JaysRap Verified Member Posted August 12, 2014 Posted August 12, 2014 I remember AA saying "trades still happen in August so I expect activity". Well he wasn't lying - he just neglected to mention he wouldn't be part of any of those transactions.
