jays76 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I'm just trying to gauge the level of backlash that could occur if the Jays don't make the playoffs this year, how many fans would disappear and what would be the direction of the team and corresponding fallout from this?
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Who cares? Those same fans will jump right back on the wagon at the first sight of success.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 In the grand scheme of things Rogers doesn't give a f***

No backlash from me. I don't want to give up Stroman nor Sanchez and to acquire any type of "perceived improvement" would likely take one or both of those guys.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 It's probably expected that AA does little to nothing. At least by more serious fans. AA doesn't want rental players. He's probably trying to get a controllable player or try to sign someone to an extension (probably has no $ for that unless payroll is unloaded with trade).

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They're will always be people who will be mad, some even if the team wins the World Series. Sure some people will be pissed. I might not be too happy if they come up short and a potential upgrade might have made the difference. Then again I don't nor anyone for that matter know if a trade was made would it have helped. Hell, we don't know if AA could make a deal that didn't lead to years of rebuilding again just to make a shot now. We'll never know if something could have been done or not since we're not the GM and/or the GMs talking trades. You'll have the bandwagon fans who will bitch like they always do and stop showing up and you might have some people who get upset that we came so close yet didn't make it in wondering if something could have been done. The only way I would be royally pissed is if AA had a decent trade lined up and didn't go through with it either because he dropped the ball or if Rogers said you don't get another dime even though this will push ups into the playoffs and possibly the World Series. Again, we'd likely never know that. Some will be mad, some upset if the team is this close and something falls apart a la 2000 when the Jays went on that losing streak and doomed their WC chances. I'm used to not making the playoffs so I can't be too upset if that happens. I might be disappointed as many might if we come so close yet so far but we as fans can't really do anything about it. BoSox fell apart, other teams that were favourites failed to win, make the playoffs, win the series so if people get pissed then so be it. s*** happens. A lot of things can't be controlled.
Governator Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Maybe they've recognized that 1 ace isn't winning them a world series regardless of payroll. Maybe they've used their level heads to understand they have some good high level prospects and hanging on to them isn't a bad move. Maybe they also know that they can fire sell the core team and rebuild around their young studs in the event of an utter failure in late September. That standing pat has equal chances of success at this stage in the many trade proposals that center around Stroman.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 The average fan won't give a s***. Your hardcore fan will just rage on twitter and on message boards, which Rogers won't see. And both fans would still buy games and watch the games. So all in all, there won't be any backlash. And Rogers won't certainly give a f***
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Insulting the forum? Low number of posts? Is this a troll I smell? pretty much nothing good to say. feels like a back up trolling account.
jays76 Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Author Posted July 31, 2014 What does "cheaps out" mean!?! Rogers has committed more than enough money. Personally I commend them for making the move last year (whether those funds were mismanaged or not is a whole other story of course). Coming into this offseason as a business conglomerate I really couldn't fault them for being gun shy about spending more money but after this team has put themselves in a position to make a serious run and become the team they had envisioned, imo it's a poor decision to continue to be tight fisted in the face of this post season opportunity. I think it's a brutal PR move and also a poor business decision if the unthinkable happens and we tailspin out of the wildcard race, they potentially would've cost themselves a ton of playoff revenue and merchandise sales going into next season. All on top of the morale boost it would give that clubhouse, the fanbase and the city..
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 I think these would be the same fans that if we don't win the world series would come back in 2 years when Norris and Sanchez are lighting us up saying that it was a terrible decision to trade them. Toronto is a hockey town and about 1/2 their fan base is fair weather fans who don't know the difference between Mike Trout and Lake Trout. It makes no sense to trade away top prospects for Lester or the 3-4 top prospects it would take to land price.

I certainly don't want them to trade Stro, but I do want them to seize this limited opportunity and make a move. What I don't want them to do is rebuild again and have to wait another 5+ years to hopefully have a good young pitching core hitting their prime and then praying we stumble into a couple younger versions of Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. Governator Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 if we tailspin out of the playoff race and drop 10 in a row it'll be from an offensive crash like what happened in June not because we didn't upgrade Happ.
shortstop Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 so long as the jays legitimately compete for a playoff spot, where each game matters like it does now, won't be much backlash against Rogers/AA
leaffie Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 They just had the highest viewership for a single game. They have their pitching pretty well going along smoothly. They have their 4,5,6 starters coming back to the lineup. Why would they fall out of contention. If that happens, they must have had another catastrophic bunch of injuries to their starting staff. If that happened, those same fans that were watching on Tuesday, won't blame Rogers.

Like I said clubhouse morale, fan & city excitement also come with the talent you're receiving and sometimes you can't account for those intangibles. Sometimes it's just all about making the right move at the right time..

Not necessarily, there's a buzz in the city and everybody's talking about the Jays right now so there's a heightened awareness of the deadline situation. There's a hunger with the fans & media to make a move, if no move is made and we can't get over the hump against the contenders down the stretch (Bal, Det, Sea, NY) along with facing a tough Tampa team people will lament on this moment and how a tightwad Rogers dropped the ball.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 That's what I'm thinking. I'll keep an eye on it and put a lump of coal in the stocking if he continues.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 People blaming Rogers for the front office's incompetence are idiots. Why should Rogers hand even more money to AA and Beeston when they have yet to prove that they'll spend it responsibly and build a consistent winner with it? They had their chance and blew it with the dumbass Marlins and Mets trades.
