Deadline looms - What direction should we take .5 gms out of Wild Card

Tied with NYY and 3 games back of BAL with Lind, Edwin and Lawrie return not too far off. 8 days to trade deadline.

 

NYY and Bosox are sure to add to their rosters heavily 2015 and 2016. Cubs and Padres have made the moves discussed ad naseum.

 

Hutch looks tired. The rest of the rotation is meh still and the pen has been quite bad.

 

Sanchez looked better than most expected but only 2 innings. Means 0.

 

2nd, pen, D and the rotation all have issues to address as well as RHH against LHP. (our competition also has lots of holes)

 

Reyes has been on fire offensively and Colby has been worse than 2012. Melky and Jose B pretty steady.

 

Is AA going to:

 

1. Stand pat and hope they get healthy and keep looking better as they have the last couple games. Look to future and cheap young rotation.

 

2. Tinker with the line up with some modest additions (Prado? ish) to fill holes and hope that will keep us interesting and in it.

 

3. Sell off major assets for rebuild looking to add for a build around a future young cheap rotation we bring up.

 

4. Make a big move(s) for run at it moving key prospects now that the market has been established.

 

5. Pull a Carter Alomar deal few see coming where major assets get swapped.

 

Probably 2. We look more like the team that got so hot the last couple games with good D and speed and some clutch hits. Going to be interesting.

Then I looked up the three guys AA was presumably interested in last off season. And realized that NONE of Garza, Jimenez or Santana would have been an upgrade over Happ, at least to this point, according to WAR.

 

Happ's 0.9 WAR is on par with Santana's, and the other 2 have provided neutral or negative wins for their teams.

For me it goes 2 > 4 > 1 > 5 > 3. I think some kind of rebuild is around the corner anyways but I'd rather try to get a playoff appearance in the interim even if it means getting little to nothing for many of your veterans.

Regarding NYY and BOS adding heavily to their rosters.. no guarantees on that. Free agency crop is severely lacking for this offseason. New York also has the albatross of the A-Rod deal to return to the roster.

 

Yankees also have very little to spend, with $161M+ already on the books for 2015 without incurring severe luxury tax penalties at $178M (+11M in benefits.)

I kind of thought that but was too lazy to look it up. Thanks. Just goes to show that sometimes these GMs aren't so dumb after all. Jiminez was a major 4 yr commitment and has not been great. I didn't see Stro making the contribution he has so far this year but any winning team has to have some positive surprises.

 

I still liked the 1 year deal for Santana and with Hutch seemingly running out of gas we could use that down the stretch.

Yeah he's a name that I thought of too. Reed Johnson or Justin Ruggiano could be had for very little too. Jeff Baker could be a bat to platoon with Lind but I wonder if the Jays would just rather use Reimold to do that.

 

As for SP, Jorge De la Rosa could be had for little and I think he'd be an upgrade over Happ. The Rockies also have Drew Stubbs who would probably cost more than we want.

 

One minor issue is what to do with the IF. If we brought in a platoon CF and then keep Reimold to platoon with Lind that only leaves one spot to platoon with Tolleson in the IF, Kawa or Francisco. Kawa is playing better but he has options and Francisco doesn't.

Well that's just it. AA was counting on Morrow, but not sounting on Stroman. It worked out anyway.

 

He still SHOULD have signed Santana IYAM with the knowledge that Happ was probably going to be mediocre and Morrow not be reliable. But that non-signing hasn't hurt us the way the IF situation has.

I'm hoping it's 4 to make one final kick at the can this year and next with the current roster but I'd be happy with 2. What I think is going to happen is 1 because of the inneffectual offseason and doubletalk ramblings of AA this deadline.. A starting pitcher is our best bet. We could then move hutch to pen and he would be solid 1 inning at a time, so a starter would improve the team in two ways. Next year hutch can start again. Him and dirty Sanchez could be huge additions to the pen for this year. Maybe drabek as well.

I have a feeling when Reimold is healthy and ready to come off the DL the Jays will not chance losing him by sending him to the minors so they will keep him on the 25 man roster

 

There could be some interesting roster decisions once EE, Lind, Lawrie and Reimold are activated

 

I am guessing EE and Lind will be activated first and Rasmussen and Francisco will be sent to minors ... Francisco may not clear waivers

 

When Lawrie is activated I think Kawasaki will be sent to minors but I am not sure what happens when Reimold is activated ... Gose back to minors I guess
