If completed, Hammel and/or Samardzija would go to A’s. Ken RosenthalVerified account @Ken_Rosenthal Addison Russell’s name has been discussed with #Cubs, sources tell me and @jonmorosi. He is not playing today for #Athletics’ Double A club. Wow.. the A's really want to get a World Series ring this year.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Beane is probably just baiting other GM's to get in on the bidding.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Great news for us. Yup, we don't need a SP. If we do get one, get a cheap one like Colon. Come 2016, we could have one of the best and cheapest rotations in baseball.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Beane is probably just baiting other GM's to get in on the bidding. You never know with Beane. He makes big moves and then sells the players off. Guy is a true ninja.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 when your highest fWAR from your pitching staff, over the last 30 days, is your closer...it's time to look for pitching options. Beane isn't going to buy in to some low'ish ERA's, this is not a great pitching staff at all.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Theo versus Beane! Let's go Theo. Steal Addy Russell from Beane. 1B Rizzbro 2B Castro SS Russell 3B Baez LF Soler/Almora CF Arismendy/Almora RF Bryant fap fap fap /part time Cubs fan
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Stroman, Hutchison, Norris, Nolin, Sanchez (#5) could be ready next year. The key being "could". I'd rather trade Dickey in the off season, sign one of the top SP in FA and go with something like: FA SP, Stroman, Hutchison, Buehrle and possibly Nolin. Hopefully, Norris continues to do well at AA and starts 2015 at Buffalo with Sanchez as depth.

It's not a very powerful lineup outside of Baez and Bryant though. Theo will still get pitchers for Valbeuna (I still think it will be from the Jays or Yanks) and Hammel IMO.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Beanes awesome, do any of u think he'd give up Sonny Gray for Hammel and Samard? Kind of makes sense, the cubs get the control of Sonny and the A's get there win now guys.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Stroman, Hutchison, Norris, Nolin, Sanchez (#5) could be ready next year. Yup, but with Dickey and Buehrle in the fold, we likely won't see most or all of those guys in the rotation until the 2016 season.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 What is up with the Nolin fap? Hasn't done anything since his call up LY. Was (is?) injured, but has not progressed

I don't think that we'll be able to rely on guys like Happ and Hutch and Stroman in the playoffs since they have practically no playoff or big games experience, even though they had some great starts.

Bryant likely ends up in RF. Schwarber at C somehow someway it's still position changes for 5 guys at least. Most of the projected changes are because the other guys the Cubs have. Most would have stayed if they were in a different situation. Might add in that Olt and Lake are left out of your scenario too. Not a bad bench. In thinking about Valbuena...the Jays dumped him to make room for Omar Vizquel. Not sure if that one is in the AA should be fired thread but it's a 5 WAR ( over 2.5 season) player dumped for a hundred year old babysitter

Let's get to the playoffs first. This team doesn't need to mortgage the next 5-6 years of a potentially great and cheap rotation for one shot in the bucket that will likely end in failure with the quality of some of the other contenders.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 5, 2014 Posted July 5, 2014 Stroman, Hutchison, Norris, Nolin, Sanchez (#5) could be ready next year. There's definitely a plausible series of events that could lead to us having a great rotation two years down the road, but Jays fans have been saying that since I started following the team in the 90s. I think most every team has enough arms in the system that their fans can say this.

Well, Norris is probably a AAA level pitcher at AA and Sanchez is probably a AA level pitcher at AAA, but close enough.

Well, Norris is probably a AAA level pitcher at AA and Sanchez is probably a AA level pitcher at AAA, but close enough. Things have a habit of not working out though. Most likely scenario is probably that Nolin and Sanchez never become regular starters, and among the other three one blows out an arm, one fails to take the next step, and one becomes a legit long-term guy. Just my experience that penciling in rotations two years down the road is kind of a fool's errand, especially when most/all of the guys are unproven.

You are correct that most teams say this, however having both Stroman and Hutch transition to the bigs in fine form (this far), has changed things a bit. Most were hoping one of Hutch or Stroman could make it, but now we have both and a fast emerging Norris. Let's also not forget about Nolin who is basically ready to anchor the 5th spot if not for injuries. If Sanchez can at least not s*** the bed, this rotation could be something special for the next 5-6 years.

If one of Norris, Sanchez or even Nolin pan out, things start to get interesting. If you can have 3/5 of your rotation making league min, or close to that, it brings some great roster flexibility.

I'd still spend some money for one of the top FA SP with the $ possibly saved on Morrow and a possible Dickey or Buehrle trade in the off season.

Agreed - we don;t have an ace and we're not likely to land one without giving up our four best prospects. And I certainly don't want to trade upper level prospects for number 3 starters. Basically we have 5 guys (when Morrow comes back) who are 3-4 starters and Buerhle who is a number 3 pitching like an ace this year. Split the difference and call him a number 2. Get to the playoffs - lots of things can happen with a good offensive team - big game pressure - maybe EE gets crazy hot at the right time and does his 2 homer a game shtick and we manage to make things interesting. If we has a rotation that had a Halladay in it and we had a 10 game lead then I would consider trading the farm for a Shark or Price because then you go into the playoffs with a rotation of Halladay, Price and Beurhle and suddenly you have a sick 1-2-3 and a great offense. We get Morrow back and you kinda just have to hope for the best and he can dominate like he did at the end of 2012. And to support our rookies a bit - Hutchison and Stroman may not crumble with the pressure. For Stroman everything is pressure at this point and he has pitched very well in the rotation so far against good hitting teams. Hutchison has been very good at times. Beuhrle, Hutchison, Stroman as 1-2-3 isn't terrible.
