The Mets will listen to offers for Bartolo Colon and could even start openly shopping the veteran right-hander, team sources tell Mike Puma of the New York Post. There is no indication a deal would happen soon, however, as the team could wait until after the July 31st deadline since GM Sandy Alderson “has no pressure” to trade Colon. (Puma points out that Alderson waited until late August 2013 to make the Marlon Byrd trade with the Pirates).

Colon turned 41 years old in May and his late-career renaissance is still going strong. The veteran has posted a 3.88 ERA and a 5.27 K/BB over 106 2/3 IP as a Met, with 79 strikeouts and a league-low 1.3 walks per nine innings. Those numbers do carry some heavy ballpark splits, as Colon has a 2.11 ERA in six Citi Field starts and a 5.06 ERA in 10 road starts.

Despite Colon’s age, the two-year, $20MM contract he signed with New York last winter is considered to be “relatively friendly,” an AL executive tells Puma. Colon is owed roughly $4.4MM for the remainder of this season and is owed $11MM for 2015.

Moving Colon would line the Mets up for a full-scale pitching youth movement in 2015. Jon Niese and Dillon Gee would be the most experienced members of a projected rotation that would also include a returning Matt Harvey and the likes of Zack Wheeler, Jacob deGrom, while prospects Rafael Montero and Noah Syndergaard could also be candidates to win jobs. In this situation you could also expect the Mets to sign at least one veteran arm for depth purposes during the offseason, a la their addition of Daisuke Matsuzaka last winter.

Also from Puma’s piece, he notes that the Mets are “reluctant” to trade Niese, which fits with Alderson’s recent statements about Niese’s availability (or lack thereof). Niese, for his part, tells Puma that he wants to remain with the Mets.

Eleven million for Colon's 2015? I think I'd pass on that.

He'd probably he a slight upgrade over Happ or Dickey in the AL East, I'd take him (if nothing better) but I wouldn't give up much.

Another guy who doesn't walk 4-5 per 9 IP would be refreshing

Couple more million that what Morrow will cost and will likely outperform him.

Once again though, we probably could have signed him ourselves as a free agent for maybe 10% more than the Mets gave him (numbers souce = my ass)

Now we would have to trade something good to get him

Free agency can work, Blue Jays FO. It really can.

Question is, what would you give up to get him?

Question is, what would you give up to rent him?

Any package that doesn't include Pompey or Sanchez

I don't think ANY team would give up an A-list prospect for Colon at this point

Extra advantage of him coming to to AL, no one would have to watch him "bat" or "run" the bases anymore

It's crazy that Oakland got this production for $5 Million.

That's because AA never addressed pitching in the offseason. Did it really take a rocket scientist to guess that Morrow would get injured this year? Or that Dickey was never going to be that ace again in the AL? I mean, we knew we really needed an ace pitcher at the start of the season, and it still is the case.

Yea, just like we should have outbid the Orioles by 10% to land Jimenez, that would have been great. #crapshoot

Fair point

Pitchers are totally a crap shoot

But none of us liked that Jimenez deal. Most of us liked the Colon signing I think.

Pretty sure if you read through some of this, not many were jumping for joy. Some even hated the idea of having to be stuck signing Santana instead.

That's one way of looking at it I suppose but Colon and the Roger's Centre seem like a very poor fit.

Definitely not a great fit, but he should be a very capable backend guy and eat up some valuable innings. If the cost is not too high, and I would imagine it isn't, might be a solid option.

That's how AA likes to make his moves!

And I doubt we'd have had to give more, he probably would have come for less. Contender vs rebuild + his DR buddies.

Colon for Dickey!

I'm not crazy about committing a 2015 rotation spot to a back end starter at this point. Kind of reminds of the Happ deal where you get a head start on limiting your options for the next season. If there was a similar guy you could get as a two month rental, I'd prefer that. McCarthy?

Well seeing as Happ and Morrow are almost certainly gone after this season, we would have one open rotation spot. Unless we want Sanchez or Norris breaking camp in the rotation, it might be a good idea to have one more innings eater in the mix. It's a short term deal and when the inevitable injuries hit, we would have some very capable depth in the minors.

It definitely makes more sense if the team has definitely turned the page on Morrow (which I guess was your original point). Should what Morrow does between now and the end of the season change anything? Probably not. He would still have the injury history hanging over him and he probably won't be that impressive on the mound anyways. A funny thing happened while everyone was waiting for Morrow to fulfill his potential. He got older and crappier. It's a bit like Overbay. He came back from a major injury just in time for father time to rob him of his skills.
