fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Scouts from Baltimore, Boston and Toronto were in attendance for Chicago Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija's most recent outing, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. It's possible the clubs were scouting other players during the June 12 game in Pittsburgh, although all three teams are believed to be in the market for starting pitching. In that outing, Samardzija gave up four runs and issued two walks in six innings while striking out seven. Rosenthal's scoop comes on the heels of a Chicago Sun-Times report stating the Cubs have engaged several teams in trade talks for Samardzija and right-hander Jason Hammel. The Blue Jays, who have long been linked to Samardzija in rumors, were listed alongside Atlanta and Seattle as clubs that have reportedly spoken with Chicago regarding the pair. Source
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 All teams assign one or more scouts for each of the 15 games; nothing unusual.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Im not sure which the better deal is at this point, Hammel or Samaradzija... I almost want to say Samaradzija just so I can listen to Buck try to pronounce it when he is hammered.
flafson Verified Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Hammel has a track record of being not so good in the AL East, and shark will cost an arm and a leg, doesn't have much history in the AL East and is on a decline the last few starts.

That may be, but what is Happ's history in comparison?
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I still prefer Ian Kennedy or Brandon McCarthy. Ian Kennedy would be most ideal as he`s under control for 1.5 years.

Wouldn't Shark be under control for another 1.5 years? As for McCarthy, count that out - his contract is a deterrent for teams right now.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 AA has been looking to acquire a starter or 2, plus a 2B since last off season and hasn't been successful, I see no reason to believe he'll be successful now.

Kennedy comes cheaper in terms of the prospects that would go back.

Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Sanchez will probably be part of any deal. Logic dictates that's why they promoted him. They're hoping he spins off a few gems to up his value.

Perhaps, but that's what they all say about players they intend to deal. I remember when we got the package for Halladay. AA practically was fapping it to TDA in interviews... well the rest is history.

Regardless I think both would require Sanchez as part of the return.

Keith Law said they like how Randy St Claire works with young starters. That's all it is. In any event, how exactly would promoting him to AAA affect his trade value? I'm confused. We could probably get Brandon McCarthy on the cheap. So he's who I would go after.

Regardless I think both would require Sanchez as part of the return. I think you can get Kennedy without Sanchez/Norris. San Diego got him for basically bullpen pieces. I think something like Ian Kennedy and Chris Denorfia for Sean Nolin, Mitch Nay and Kevin Pillar would be fair for both teams. Sean Nolin would be a cheap/controllable replacement that should be able to stick in the NL and a pitcher friendly park. Mitch Nay is a nice prospect and Pillar could take over for Denorfia as a guy who can hit LHP and can play all three OF spots.

Yeah, that's probably what I read. And it could affect his trade value by hoping for a.) a little ERA luck that Sanchez has seemed to be fond of and b.) some GM believing in it. Probably not a good strategy. I think it's about St Claire and potentially calling him up later.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 The O's or Sux will get him while AA hems and haws about "value." I've seen this show too many times before.
admin Site Manager Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Maybe AA is taking a shot in the dark, moving Sanchez to AAA, hope he performs well to up his value, and dump him. Though I'm not sure how high his trade value is with his current walk rate no matter how good he pitches.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Daniel Norris made his 13th start for class-A Dunedin on Thursday at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium before 809 fans and watchful eyes. Chaim Bloom, Tampa Bay director of baseball operations, and two Rays scouts were there; as were Cubs vice-president Tim Wilken, along with Blue Jays assistant general manager Andrew Tinnish, special assignment scout Russ Bove and pro cross checker Dean Decillis. Norris, 21, pitched five scoreless innings against the Daytona Cubs, allowing three base runners on one hit and two walks, while striking out three. Norris lowered his ERA to 1.22 as he walked 18 and struck out 76 in 66 1/3 innings. Now, the Rays and Cubs scouts could have been out for a drive and saw the lights and stopped for a hot dog, or they could have been checking out the Jays prospects.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 Also from that article: "Or, they were just seeing how stacked the Jays’ cupboard was: Taylor Cole, 24, is 5-2 with a 2.19 ERA walking 16 and striking out 95 in 78 innings. Lefty Matt Boyd, 23, is 5-1 with an 0.55 ERA walking nine and fanning 55 in 48.2 innings (but scuffled at double-A New Hampshire, 0-2, 8.31) and K.C. Hobson, 23, has 57 RBIs in 61 games (with seven homers) and major league blood lines as the son of Butch Hobson." Trade those guys instead AA!

Agreed... the numbers there that stand out are age 24, 23, and 23. Lets trade those guys

For price I could understand (granted I still wouldn't do it), but for Shark he is not worth both IMO. If AA does make a deal, don't touch Norris.

Then have those guys make an impact in a year or 2 possibly.

Maybe they can trade for shark and keep one of the AL east teams from trading for him.

Beltran for Wheleer Greinke for Segura+ ----> Angels missed the playoffs Garza for CJ Edwards+ Holliday for CarGo+Huston Street
