TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 I wouldn't be so sure, apparently he only has a 65% chance of signing. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2069663-lane-thomas-prospect-profile-for-toronto-blue-jays-5th-round-pick A future first-divison centrefielder. Wow. Are you being sarcastic, or did you genuinely just use Bleacher Report as a more reliable source than the player's own tweet?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 He seemed pretty excited to be drafted by the Blue Jays. I assume that means they were all over him. Give the Kid his thousand dollars ALA Pillar. Kulfus-lite
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 So how has Day 2 been so far? Everyone liking the picks? Guys reportedly signing?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 He's not a college sign guy. If we offered $1000 he would probably laugh in our faces. HS guy. 75K
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Zehner is the first real punt by the Jays, he's the first player they picked up that wasn't on either of BA or MLB's lists. Everyone else was ranked 300 or higher, which is really really good. If they're saving slot dollars while not completely throwing away their picks, as a follow up to that impeccable first day, this is going to be a really good class.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Here are all the off-board picks in the draft so far (meaning they aren't on BA's Top 500 -- most of these are punts but a few of them, like LaValley, are real prospects) http://i.gyazo.com/16a2204033c854cecfb36fceea90ce2e.png Purple - Not on BA 500, Ranked on MLB.com Black - Not on either list Blue - Not on either list, picked by Blue Jays

This just means the Blue Jays saw something others didn't. St Louis Cardinals et al didn't get good by drafting who mlb.com said should be drafted.

I mentioned that he was likely a punt, because he's a college senior, and he was probably drafted to free up the slot dollars at that pick. The Blue Jays do this every year between Rounds 3-10.

If you are expecting much from this ZZ, I`d like to have some of what you are smoking.
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Maurice (Toronto) Would the Jays picking Toronto's own Gareth Morgan over Reid-Foley have been defensible? Klaw (2:13 PM) No. I didn't understand Jays fans' desire for the team to take Canadian players when I worked there and I don't understand it now. This is major league baseball not the freaking World Cup. -------------------- Haha KLaw's reaction is very amusing. We are kind of irrational about Canadians.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I wonder how much (if any) we save on any of our picks to put towards players drafted after 10. I'm guessing we might have enough for at least one Tellez/Brentz type of signing, just curious to see who might still be on the board. I'm not sure if either of these guys has been taken yet: Bobby Bradley, 1B - Louisiana State Tanner Houck, RHP - Missouri Keaton McKinney, RHP -Arkansas Cobi Johnson, RHP - Florida State Trenton Kempe, OF - Fresno State Jake Godfrey, RHP - Louisiana State Luke Bonfield, OF - Arkansas Garrett Cave, RHP - Florida International

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Nick Wells Round 3 - Projectable lefty out of high school. Fastball sits low 90s, touches 93. Also features a changeup and a curveball. Matt Morgan Round 4 - Very good defensive catcher, not a bad hitter either. High school. Lane Thomas Round 5 - 5 tool OF. Reported to have agreed to signing already. High school. Grayson Huffman Round 6 - Cheap guy, college sign. LHP Zack Lehner OF Round 7 - Cheap guy, college sign. Justin Shafer LHP Round 8 - Cheap guy, college sign. I don't know if Huffman is a total punt. He's a bit of a prospect-ish. Ughhh why are teams taking so long between picks still.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I hope we grab Keaton McKinney round 11. Is he sign able anyone know?

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 The draft setup is f***ing silly. Punting picks to save money? That's not the setup, it's just the strategy that the Blue Jays created and every team followed. You're only allowed a certain amount of money to use on the draft and have to fit that cap, or else you lose future picks. They punt early, and get great talents that fell down the board late. You get the same result in the end, except the one small fact that a lot of good prospects won't be able to brag about their draft positions. 10 years from now, you won't be able to measure talent based on where they were drafted, because it's common for Top 150 talents to go in the 11-40 rounds, making it a big clusterf***.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Every team is doing it. I know. And I know it's been done since the new CBA. It's still a dumb setup.
