Day 1 Recap:

The Toronto Blue Jays selected three consensus Top-20 picks in college right-hander Jeff Hoffman (Picked #9, Ranked #13), college catcher Max Pentecost (Picked #11, Ranked #10) and prep righty Sean-Reid Foley (Picked #49, Ranked #19)

 

The draft slot allocations for these picks are as follows: Jeff Hoffman, picked #9 overall, is slotted at $3,080,800 and expected to sign significantly underslot. Max Pentecost, picked #11 overall, is slotted at $2,888,300 and expected to sign at or slightly below slot. Sean-Reid Foley, picked #49 overall, is being speculated to be a tough sign, but with a slot value of $1,128,800, and a comfortable budget as a result of the earlier two picks, the Jays are expected to sign him as well.

 

The Blue Jays' first selection on Day 2 will come at #9 in Round 3 (83rd overall), and after the Marlins make their lone pick in the Supplemental Round, the Jays will draft after every 30 picks (#9 of each round) thereafter, until the conclusion of the 2014 draft.

Bukauskas is a near-impossible sign (like Bickford was), so expect him to reach the Jays at #83, and to continue sliding beyond that point. Based on everything the Jays have done the past few years, you would expect them to begin punting picks on off-board seniors at some point soon to free up cap space, but it's strange in the sense that, they don't actually need any additional cap space for their current three picks. Despite drafting three very highly-touted prospects, the savings they are expected to make on the Hoffman pick, and probably even the Pentecost pick to a certain extent should be more than enough to afford Reid-Foley. It will be an incredibly interesting thing to follow and keep an eye on as we get deeper into the draft, because outside of the Jays draft room, I don't think anybody knows anything about their strategy.

208 Jake Latz LHP Lemont (Ill.) HS Ill. 7

 

Latz formed an electric prep battery with Mike Papierski, and both are committed to Louisiana State. Latz may not get there after a strong finish to a dominant spring campaign. The slender 6-foot-2, 185-pounder is growing into his body and has added velocity this spring. After sitting in the 84-88 mph range last summer on the travel ball circuit, Latz topped out at 92 mph early and popped some 93s as the season wore on. He has a feel for spinning his slider and has shown the ability to land it for strikes. He’s needed just two pitches to overmatch Illinois prep competition and could use some polish, but he has athleticism. If he doesn’t sign, he could pitch in the weekend rotation for LSU as a freshman.

Lots of high ceiling players remain. Tons of high school arms with glowing reports. I have a feeling were going to see a lot of college seniors to save money to sign our big 3 but the Blue Jays can still have a lot of fun. Position player are drying up fast though. Were going to continue to see mostly pitching.

 

 

The Pillar's, Kalfus, Leyland's, Parmley's are the next; guys that will help us to save money for the big 3 and posible another high ceiling guys (Tellez 30 rd, Tewes 22 rd unsigned, Lauer 15 rd unsigned)

An exciting first day of the draft concluded Thursday night with 74 selections through the first two rounds, including supplemental selections. The third round begins at 1 p.m. Eastern with the Astros’ at pick No. 75.

 

Here are the 10 best available players from the BA 500, our definitive draft prospects list, at the start of Day 2, with seven coming from the high school ranks and several falling because of signability questions. You can track the best available undrafted players from the BA 500 throughout the draft simply by filtering this list by drafted/undrafted status, or by using this link.

 

 

No. 33 Jacob Bukauskas, rhp, Stone Bridge HS, Ashburn, Va.

Bukauskas is one of the hardest-throwing prep pitchers in the draft–sitting 93-96 mph, touching 98 at his best–in a class known for its velocity. He sent a letter to teams late in May asking them not to draft him because of his commitment to North Carolina. If Bukauskas gets drafted at this point, it likely won’t be until after the 10th round, when his selection would not put a portion of a team’s bonus pool at risk.

 

No. 45 Michael Cederoth, rhp, San Diego State

Cederoth is the highest-ranked college player left on the board. He has premium stuff, with a fastball that can sit 94-97 mph and touch 100. His role has changed from reliever to starter, then back to the pen, where he probably fits long-term. His control (4.9 walks per nine) remains an issue.

 

No. 48 Milton Ramos, ss, American Heritage HS, Hialeah Gardens, Fla.

Ramos is the premier defensive shortstop in a class that’s short on true up-the-middle profiles. He has plus speed, has drawn comparisons to Alcides Escobar and is committed to Florida International.

 

No. 53 Carson Sands, lhp, North Florida Christian HS, Tallahassee, Fla.

Sands, a Florida State commit, improved significantly as a senior, showing increased velocity, feel for pitching and two offspeed pitches that show at least average potential. After sitting 90-92 mph and touching 95 down the stretch, he showed reduced velocity in his final appearance of the spring at the Florida high school all-star event in Sebring, at 88-91 mph.

 

No. 57 Mac Marshall, lhp, Parkview HS, Lilburn, Ga.

Marshall, who has a curveball and changeup that show above-average potential, showed reduced velocity toward the end of the season, sitting in the high 80s and touching 91-92 mph in some starts. He is considered a tough sign away from his Louisiana State commitment.

 

No. 59 Matthew Railey, of, North Florida Christian HS, Tallahassee, Fla.

Railey offers a pure lefthanded stroke, natural hitting ability and at least average power potential. Although he is a plus runner in the 60, some expect him to move to a corner outfield spot, and his below-average arm will play better in left. He is committed to Florida State.

 

No. 61 Brett Graves, rhp, Missouri

The second-highest-ranked college player left on the board, Graves is an athletic strike-thrower (1.8 walks per nine) with a fastball that sits in the low 90s with life, touching 95, and a curveball that shows above-average potential.

 

No. 62 Jakson Reetz, c, Norris HS, Firth, Neb.

Reetz is the top-ranked prep catcher remaining, in a deep position for this draft. The Nebraska commit has a high-intensity game with hitting ability, athleticism and an above-average arm behind the plate.

 

No. 63 Josh Morgan, ss, Orange (Calif.) Lutheran HS

The UCLA commit is an instinctive player with passion for the game and a chance to remain at shortstop, with smooth actions and soft hands. He has a contact-oriented righthanded stroke with a chance to hit, while offering average or slightly better speed and arm strength.

 

No. 66 Chris Oliver, rhp, Arkansas

Oliver has some of the best velocity from the college ranks, sitting 93-95 mph and touching 97 with downhill plane. His slider shows plus potential. His statistical performance has not matched his raw ability in his first year as a starter, as he struck out 5.7 per nine with a 1.6 strikeout-walk ratio.

I think you mean Kemp. I asked the guys at BP and they said they haven't heard anyone in on him, which likely means he's going to school.

A two-sport athlete in high school, Kemp is the quintessential high-risk, high-reward high school athlete, with some loud tools, but a long way to go.

 

Kemp doubles as a wide receiver in the fall. His outsanding speed is apparent, and it helps him on both sides of the ball. He should be able to steal some bases, and he has the skills to stay in center field. He also has some raw power in his right-handed swing. His hitting is still quite raw, so the question remains how much it will come in order for him to be able to tap into that power and become a more complete baseball player.

 

People complain that baseball doesn't always attract the best athletes, but whatever team takes Kemp will getting a good one -- one of best in the Draft class.

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 50 | Changeup: 50 | Control: 45 | Overall: 45

 

The comparisons that Houck draws speak to his potential. Some scouts look at his frame and high-effort delivery and see Max Scherzer, while others point to his long arm action and the high elbow in his mechanics and see Justin Masterson. He also evokes memories of Nick Burdi, another Illinois prep product who likely will go in the first round this June after spending three years at Louisville.

 

Houck already touches 93 mph and works at 89-92 with his fastball, which figures to gain velocity as he gets stronger. His heater is also notable for its heavy sink and also features some armside run at times.

 

Both of his secondary pitches show promise. He sells his deceptive split-changeup with fastball arm speed, though he doesn't need to use it often against high schoolers, and he shows some aptitude for spinning a slider. He's committed to Missouri, which is where Scherzer blossomed into a first-round selection.
