BTS Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 The one thing I would definitely change is have a 3 game series for the wild card. This one game playoff is bull s***. Watching Seattle in the playoffs over Oakland/LAA because Felix Hernandez is a lot better than Jered Weaver is going to be pathetic.

You can't go 1-1-1 as the travel could be way too crazy. 1 off day between games 1 and 2, then games 2/3 on back to back days. Then 1 day off and then division series starts.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 No too much time off for the other teams Yeah the Tigers don't seem to like having too many days off
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Those Kings were dominant in the playoffs and would have had a higher seed if not for the incompetent Terry Murray coaching them for half the season. They then backed it up by following that championship with a WCF appearance and then another Cup. I wouldn't say they're "mediocre." The NHL is basically broken beyond repair. Outside of a few elite teams and a few awful teams, any team can finish anywhere in a given season, and then the playoffs are pretty much just a crapshoot featuring whichever 16 of the 25 or so mostly equal teams that happened to get enough shootout points to qualify. Joke league.

Joke league. The NHL thinks it should make people watch all season because so many teams "have a shot". And maybe this is true for local fans in Philadelphia or Winnipeg, etc. But what actually happens for the millions of VERY casual NHL fans like myself? We pay ZERO attention until the playoffs actually start. The regular season is pretty much meaningless with the exception of serious injuries to star players. (Stamkos/cough)
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I'm pretty scared that they're going to be inclined to go in that direction when they see how even one extra WC spot has increased interest late in the season in multiple cities. Teams like New York, Toronto, Cleveland, and Seattle would be playing out the schedule at this point in past, but are now in the thick of a playoff chase. That's a quarter of the league! I hope it stops here though. The NHL has turned itself into an absolute farce trying to maximize revenues across the league until the season is over. The next step has to be 8 teams per league though, unless they go to 6 and the top two teams get a bye, but that could be both good and bad, especially if it messes up the rotation. It will dilute the entire post season, but it has to be significant money for the entire league and that will be tough to ignore. The NBA and NHL are complete jokes with their playoffs and it's going to be a shame when the MLB follows suit.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I agree. Yep. This ain't football. 1 game doesn't cut it.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Yep. This ain't football. 1 game doesn't cut it. It's just a quick money grab for the MLB and a way to generate increased interest down the stretch. I doubt they care about the better WC team making it through.
shortstop Verified Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 MLB imo has done what's in the best interest of the game... prior to 1994, the 2 division winners in each league made the playoffs. I'd guess, what, 6-8 teams max league wide actually played meaningful baseball post June/July? then in 1994, they added the WC when MLB added the central division to each league...that's 6 division winners, 2 WC winners & say 2-3 teams overall that had a shot at the WC - that's 10-11 teams that played meaningful baseball post June/July then in 2012, the 2nd WC started - that's 6 division winners, 4 WC winners & say 5-6 teams with a shot at the WC - that's 15-16 teams playing meaningful baseball post June/July I think the 2 WC system is great, overall fan interest is up & it's fun scoreboard watching...perhaps tweak the format a bit - say 3 game WC series (not sure how the teams that would play the WC winners would feel ie. is that too many days off & does WC team have the advantage of playing continuously? any case, don't think the 16 team or 8 team in each league playoff format is viable or makes any sense in baseball where 1 could lose to 8 after kicking butt for 162 games...
shortstop Verified Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 the other kicker of the 1 game WC is, assuming the team is able to line up their best pitcher for the WC, the winner cannot then use that best pitcher for Game 1 of the next series...which is or should be a disadvantage... so another big incentive to try to win the division, which after 162 games, is the way it should be imo

Back when there was only 1 WC and it was almost always a team from the AL East that was annoying. The Yankees/Rays/Red Sox almost didn't care if they won the division or the wild card. It hardly mattered. Now the teams most CERTAINLY do, as the difference is night and day.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Orioles lost 4-1 to the Cubs already today F'n sweet
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Orioles are up against Kyle Hendricks tomorrow He looks maybe pretty legit, eh?
kgm1 Verified Member Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Cubbies are on the verge of having a dynasty. Had the got Tanaka they would have been even further ahead. If Arrieta and Hendricks pan out and they sign a couple of FA pitchers like Lester etc I see them in two or three years going on a long run . That is going to be a tough division.

It's the clearly s***** teams like the Florida Panthers a few years ago that backed their way into the playoffs by accumulating loser points that are truly pathetic.
