Obviously there is a good chance he gets hurt again but I want him to be 100% healthy before he comes off the DL. No rushing him

Fair enough. Agree with that. no rush whatsoever.

Speaking of Santos. He was put on the DL 15 days ago.... Is he coming off today? Anyone know?

Haven't heard anything about him, wouldn't be surprised if he is out all year.

Cutting him and Santos frees up 15M which could be put towards an actual useful player.

Melky and Rasmus are FA's next year and then we have options on Happ, Morrow, Lind, Janssen, Santos, McGowan, and Thole. Losing all those guys would open up some holes but that will free up a lot of money.

I touched on this in another thread yesterday. It frees up substantial money, however, Reyes alone will see a $6M increase, and a few others see smaller increases not counting the arb eligible guys. It still leaves substantial money, however if we want Cabrera back which I am assuming management will, he is going to require a sizeable increase, probably $15M per. Plus I'm betting AA resigns Janssen as well, especially since I can't envision him exercising Santos option unless he comes back soon and dominates the rest of the season.

After that there isn't going to be that much left to address other holes unless AA gets creative with the contracts. The following two seasons will continue to see more payroll come off the books, so he may end up signing some back loaded contracts.

All of this depends very much on whether they reach the post season and whether attendance rises in the second half or not.

I'm assuming payroll remains about the same. A winner could change that however.

I agree. Janssen does have a 4 million dollar option though.

Further to that, after NEXT season, then we have a ton of payroll flexibility. Love or hate AA, he at least only saddled the team with big contracts for 3 seasons.

I have cash payroll at $136.1M for 2014, and AAV for luxury tax purposes at $140.425 after $12M in shared costs/incidentals.

Next year, offering arby to all arby guys, and estimating the amounts and letting all options go unexercised, the team is at $108.25M cash and $105.33M AAV for luxury tax purposes with the following:

Cool, thanks for that. So we should have some money to make a few moves.

perhaps this was discussed before...my guess is Santos was available to the jays for Molina b/c white sox disclosed, in private, of Santos arm troubles...

or was just a salary dump & sufficient bullpen depth by the white sox as advertised?

Janssen is a FA after this year. His $4M option was for this year.

Assuming they let all the guys with options years following this year go in 2015, the only guy they'll really lose, if they don't re-sign him, is Buehrle. Bautista, Encarnacion and Dickey all have options for 2016 that are likely to be picked up ($14M, $10M and $12M respectively).

And after 2016, Reyes is the only "important" non-arby piece still with the team, so you could see some re-negotiations of bigger pieces with 2015 team options in the meantime.

Good call on Janssen, I misread his Cot's profile.

And I agree with you on 2015 and beyond. Some guys will have options picked up, some guys will sign extensions, there will be new players who eat up payroll, etc.

"No, I want to throw away a pitcher who has the potential to put up 3 wins in a season for absolutely nothing."

3 wins in a season? So what, a 3-10 record?

Thank you! I got flamed for pretty much saying the same thing. Yes, I know the poster meant WAR but Morrow has 3 combined wins the last 2 years and I wouldn't be surprised if that number doesn't change until maybe 2015.

Get this guy out of here, it's time to go with someone else. Jays management said Esmil Rogers might have the best stuff on the team. Should we save him a roster spot too?

Toronto could have kept League, converted him into a starter, and gotten similar performance to what horsepoop Morrow has provided the Jays.

But both League and Morrow are relievers. Always have been. Always will be.

He was tried as a starter in the minors.

Bottom line is, potential does not equal results, and an injured pitcher does nothing for their team. Dump Morrow.

I also want Reyes gone. 20 million a year for an oft-injured SS is not pretty.

********, they'd never say that publicly?! Link?

He did say that, I was listening to it on the radio yesterday. He said Gibbons basically gave up on him last season and had no expectations for him coming into this year.

This is through Blair though right?

Yup. Honestly, this shouldn't surprise anyone.

Try 22M/yr for the next 3 years!
