With an extension in place, I'd certainly think about it. Samardzija is really good.

True, and there is no guarantee even one of Sanchez or Stroman develops into a pitcher as good as he is.

It is an interesting situation. If the blue jays don't do it this year then the likelihood is they are done for another 4 years with another rebuild. Shark is really good and i would be afraid that the asking price might have climbed up a bit with his outstanding start.

One question you have to ask. Is Shark, MB, Dickey, Hutch, Happ/AAA guy a contending rotation, because there are going to be stretches where we are not going to be able to score 5 runs every game. I am not sure.

If we don't get him i am not going to rage but if we go out to get him we just acquired a solid #2 possible #1 that is still fairly young.

I don't know for sure.

Didn't a lot of people on here say Samardzija was overrated and wouldn't pitch well in the AL East?

He'll do well but the thing that scares me is Stroman or Sanchez being studs for the cubs for a very long time.

I don't like this we have to get the Shark mentality...is he really the only choice out there? perhaps some tunnel vision going on here...there will be others pitchers that will become available...key of course is how long, if the jays are still in the hunt, can the jays wait to add a consistent/reliable starter for a playoff push?

I for one don't know much about Shark but would not give up one or both of Stroman or Sanchez...ergo, jays wouldn't get him...let some other club give up significant assets...

there will be another pitcher available that would be able to contribute and pitch in meaningful games...

as an aside, my question is - who needs a CF for a playoff push & what could the jays get in return for Rasmus? is there a playoff type team deep in starting pitching that needs a CF?

What do you guys think of this article? Worth giving up Sanchez and Stroman for the shark?

I wouldn't give up Stroman because I think he can come in and be at least a #5 starter for them. I would give up both Sanchez and Norris and I think a package based around them and maybe a guy like Mitch Nay and another young arm could get it done. I still think thats a lot to give up but they really need a number 2/3 starter to have a good chance at winning the division.

Woah! Don't ever play gm

Im ok with it. Sanchez/Stoman look promising to be sure but Sanchez performance this year gives me some concern on pitch count and BB ratio. He is a kid though so he can easily overcome that....or not.

Im of the view the Jays rolled hard to put this line up together and 2013 was a swing and miss. AA needs to roll them again, but an extension is a must. Wont be cheap. Bird in the hand versus 2 in the minors.

Gregg Zaun says he's not a winner and that we can expect his ERA to jump 1.5 points with a move to AL East.

I think that is, yes. Hutch looks like a real blue-chip guy.

Also, Shark is the type of guy that will have trade value in three years if the Blue Jays need to re-tool and he's signed long-term. That was perhaps my largest beef with acquiring Dickey -- he doesn't have re-trade value. Look at what the Brewers did with Zack Greinke. They got from Anaheim better pieces than they gave to KC (Jean Segura) AND got one of the best pitchers in baseball for a year and a half.

It's supposedly illogical to consider an extension as part of the trade, but in our case I think it factors in. If the extension is for a reasonable amount (the Cubs supposedly offered 5/55... maybe we go to 6/75), then I say pull the trigger.

Pull the trigger than. If we are playing meaningful baseball in September finally i will be more than accepting lol

AL East is s*** now

"The AL East will be won by a general manager; not by players or managers this year."

^Yeah. I'd bet on AA in a sumo wrestling match vs Cherington, Cashman, Friedman or Duquette.

For sure! If we get even a 2-year extension, I'd give up AT LEAST two top prospects. This guy is the real deal. He might be our ace.

Wait! Isn't Shark a FA after this year? In the article is says he's under contract through 2015. Wuck? Please advise.

I would be okay with Sanchez + additional pieces not named Stroman.

I think Stroman could help us this season as a 5th starter or as a bullpen arm (in the playoffs).

A rotation of

Shark

MB

Dickey

Hutch

Stroman

is pretty sexy.

Your likely not getting him them unless they love Norris.

Ugh, Greg Zaun is such an idiot.

Is old Jeff even better than Stroman? Too bad the idiots upstairs wouldn't have let Stroman make a start or two before Nolining him.

Any package based around Sanchez is a no-brainer. He's got a live arm but the rest of his mechanics are s*** and he's never thrown strikes in his life.

I don't believe the division will be this low next season and the Jays aren't getting magically better they are now. So yes they should go for it. Will it work? Probably not, but it's not like I love their position moving forward either may as well make a deal and take the hype based attendance increases.

It's mind boggling that Stroman didn't get a shot to start. He will be up in a few weeks I'd imagine, but it's still a crying shame.

Is it really worth giving up 2 top rated prospects for a pitcher that's projected to finish 0-14 this year?

he had an ERA over 4 last year too. disgusting player, would not start/10

I would start looking at a bunch of teams falling out of the race. Once you establish which teams are in sell mode then you look at their rotations - see if there are SOLID pitchers who are getting paid too much - you can sometimes get those kinds of guys for less prospects. If the Jays still have financial room they could pick up a bad salary perhaps without having to give up any of their top 10 prospects. I don't think we need the highly touted guys - we just need solid guys who keep you in the game and can get to the 7th without getting lit up.

Of course if the Jays brass thinks they're truly a contending team then they're probably going to need to go all in and trade for an Ace because making the playoffs is one thing but you need guys who can shut down the best teams (other playoff teams). You don't really want Dickey as the ace pitching games 1-4-7 against guys like Verlander or Kershaw. You want someone who has a chance at throwing 7-8 shutout innings in a crucial game IMO.

So if you're going to trade the farm then trade it for a true ace. Don't trade your best prospects for fringey number 3 types with nice numbers in the NL. Ervin Santan looks like CY Young in the NL. Err Dickey won the Cy Young in the NL. Maybe you look at someone like Cole Hamels - a step down from that (a lot of money and a lot of years left I believe).
