jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Barry Davis @SNBarryDavis John Gibbons hinted that changes are coming in pen. Won't say what but more than once said they miss Janssen and McGowan in pen #bluejays Could McGowan be going back to the pen? And the sound of what he said likely means Delabar or Cecil may be closing instead of Santos.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Were I Gibbons, I'd miss having the opportunity to pick guys to play for me that I wanted, rather than crappy scrubs with no options that AA just can't bear to part with.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Assigning our best LHP to the closer's role is a very bad idea. It would be if we only had one really good LHP. But we have two.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Yet Gibbons is more likely to be fired than AA

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Author Posted May 3, 2014 If they could get Santos to AAA it would help.. but he's out of options because Chicago and Toronto burned his minors options when he was a SS/3B.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I'd rather have both Loup and Cecil available for high-leverage situations against parts of the lineup with tough LHH. the problem is not the use of the two lefties, it's the fact that Gibbons refuses to use the s***** Happ, Redmond or Rogers unless it's a mop up job. cant use match ups when you only have a 5 man pen and the starters only go 5 innings. the problem is 3 absolutely useless long men who are only on the team in case the team has multiple injuries.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Cecil has been best guy in the pen right now, but I still like him for high leverage LHB scenarios. I wouldn't be upset if he was closer though. This offseason I wanted both Santos and Janssen shipped out and replaced with Delabar and Cecil. Loup and Wagner have been very good as well.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Let's not forget that whole story in ST where Gibbons said he thought McGowan should be in the BP only to backtrack the next day and claim he never said he preferred him as a reliever. That always seemed fishy to me. I think AA made him backtrack and go along with the McGowan to the rotation plan. They've certainly weakened the short-reliever corps by giving McGowan a shot at starting. They've compounded the problem by optioning Wagner. Regardless though, Santos has really f***ed the team over.

AA is killing us.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 f*** this team. Santos is kinda busy with a few board members. Contact him later bro.

AA is killing us. I don't agree that they're tired. Santos pitched on Apr-23rd against the O's, on the 26th against the Red Sox, on the 29th against the Royals and today. Gibbons has also been less than great in his bullpen management.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Also, Redmond hasn't been terrible. He can get through an inning if the other guys are tired. Gibbons let Wagner throw 45+ pitches in an outing just before he got optioned, that doesn't help matters.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Can we not have a f***ing closer while our closer is out? How about mixing Santos/Delebar/Cecil in for the 9th based on matchups?

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Assigning our best LHP to the closer's role is a very bad idea. Having a "slave to the save" closer is a very bad idea that should have ended years ago.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Especially after last night I still have more faith in McGowan to get it right before Morrow ever does! The refusal to use the 3 long men and burn the rest of the pen is even more of a head scratcher to me. These pitchers were all in the running to be our fifth starter at one point, so pray tell why can they not pitch 2-3 innings now? Even though they haven't been used I do not buy this the pen is over used crap either in this eight man pen, maybe some arms but others not so much! The difference between our starters being average to others in the American League is as little as 2 more outs per starter a game. Elite is only around 4 outs a game. The pen has only been over work by that amount per game with a extra arm! Believe they have pitched somewhere between 10-12 innings on average more then other pens. That's only 30-36 outs in 28 games over used my ass.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Having a "slave to the save" closer is a very bad idea that should have ended years ago. Unless his last name is Kimbrell or Chapman
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Think some of our problems is lack of youth and no options compounding moves! We have to many trade or lose guys! We connered the maket and ourselves thank AA for that!
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 There seems to be a clear disagreement between Gibbons and AA/Walker on McGowan going back to ST, here's a story by Mike Rutsey of the Toronto Sun: http://www.torontosun.com/2014/03/20/dustin-mcgowan-slotted-into-blue-jays-bullpen Having missed so much time in the past — he didn’t pitch at all in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and hardly at all in 2011 — Gibbons believes McGowan remains an asset and wants to make sure he stays sound. He firmly believes that he is less likely to suffer a relapse if he is used in the bullpen as opposed to pitching every fifth day in the rotation. “For me personally I was concerned about that, not everybody was but I was” Gibbons said. “That’s where he’s had his problems (when he starts). We think he’s beyond that kind of stuff and we think he thrived in the bullpen, it’s a good role for him. “He had a desire to do it (start), a lot of people had a desire to see if he could do it but myself, personally, I kind of had some reservations.”
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Santos is still a stud. He should have been traded though because all relievers are overvalued. You're right he is overvalued.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Because closers and relievers are overvalued. No matter what. The best bullpen in baseball can add maybe 3 wins. That's it. That seems a bit low, but the cost to go over 3 wins is probably unreasonable. I wouldn't cap it at that though.
