theblujay Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 The game is over. What happened is now irrelevant. It's what happened that can tell us about the future because that's all we should be interested in. ERA tells you almost nothing. Wins tell you almost nothing. WAR tells you a limited amount about the future even. Those are descriptive stats that describe what physically happened, not what will happen. You need to use projections and predictive stats from peripherals to determine what happened that was actually skill related. How many times is the pitcher going to perform exactly according to his peripherals in a single game? I would guess not very often. Therefore you could say the pitcher was "lucky" or "unlucky" almost every game. The predictive stats should be used for just that, predictions, not for evaluating a single game in regards to the outcome of the game.
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Well 'cus, since I'm laughing at the people trying to educate you, I don't feel compelled to do the same bro, you get me champ? Ok brah
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Bullpen plan Keep: Loup, Cecil, Delabar, Janssen, Redmond Add: McGowan, Wagner Dump: Everybody else (Happ, Santos, Rogers) agree... that way Gibbons can go to anyone at any time. right now he is not using 3 of the guys at all. that's like having 3 Sierras on the bench. McGowan and Morrow are fighting a losing battle. one of them will be replaced by Stroman soon. The problem will be if they can use Nolin already without ruining his development because both of those 2 need to be replaced.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 My god you're annoying. No more then you! My GOD is bigger then your god ! Lol Go hang out with your butt munching buddies on the rays board!
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Mariano Rivera was veeerrrrryyyyyyyyyy lucky... lol wow. Sorry to burst your bubble but he was the best closer of all time.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Mariano Rivera was veeerrrrryyyyyyyyyy lucky... Even he blew 7 last year so Santos is allowed 4 more before we panic.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I think you missed the sarcasm in my post lol Ya I haven't many posts this thread. Sorry!
wardhenke1 Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Trade who Lind or Francisco? What kind of value are you going to get, we just picked up Francisco off the wire FFS's? Don't bother responding please, Drew will never be signed with the Jays nor Morales, they're both Boras clients and redundant, the moves should've been made in the offseason, this is on AA, period. You're point is both moot and Dumn! I said Good Day! Sorry, that should be dumb. And you're close-minded and wrong. I would love to hear your entertaining suggestions as to how to improve this situation; at least I'm trying FFS. The rest of the geniuses still here seem to be advocating that we just need better luck.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Brandon Morrow: awful pitcher Andrew McCutchen doubles (9) on a line drive to left fielder Melky Cabrera. Gaby Sanchez singles on a ground ball to second baseman Brett Lawrie. Starling Marte singles on a ground ball to left fielder Melky Cabrera. Gaby Sanchez to 2nd. Tony Sanchez singles on a soft line drive to center fielder Colby Rasmus. Gaby Sanchez to 3rd. Starling Marte to 2nd. Neil Walker doubles (3) on a line drive to center fielder Colby Rasmus. Andrew McCutchen singles on a ground ball to center fielder Colby Rasmus. Neil Walker scores. Pedro Alvarez singles on a sharp line drive to right fielder Jose Bautista. Andrew McCutchen to 2nd. Starling Marte singles on a soft ground ball to second baseman Brett Lawrie. Tony Sanchez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Colby Rasmus. Starling Marte to 2nd. Neil Walker hits a ground-rule double (4) on a line drive to right-center field. Andrew McCutchen singles on a line drive to left fielder Melky Cabrera. Neil Walker scores. Lol at any idiot claiming that Morrow was terrible.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 So when is someone in the media going to call out AA on lying to everyone when he said in ST that they would bring the best team north, regardless of options? Probably never. Anyway...
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I'd much rather see hits against than a parade of walks, at least a ball in play has a chance to be caught. One thing I've noticed recently, a lot of grounders are going up the middle and Reyes is really shaded far towards 3b.... I really wonder if the jays are a bit behind on defensive positioning in cases where they aren't facing a guy that demands a dramatic shift.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I'm more concerned about the whole throwing 100+ pitches in 5 innings thing Allowing 6 fluky hits will do that to a pitcher, and apparently Gerrit Cole working a 10 pitch walk.
TBJ12 Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 This thread reminds me of the arguments on the old forum in mid-2011 when everyone wanted to trade for and then extend Heath Bell because they were fed up with Rauch and Francisco. The small group of posters who thought investing in Heath Bell was a bad idea were mocked very similarly to how JFaS is being mocked right now. The moral of the story: relievers are volatile, blown saves happen, and JFaS is smarter than everyone mocking him. I don't remember too many posters waiting bell. JFaS sets himself up for and probably enjoys his exact situation. This is where the sabr guys see past the results and I get that. I'm just not buying into all the unlucky nonsense when a guys out there throwing meatballs. The sliders elite, but he needs to command that fastball much better.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 It's very true that he needs to command it better. So how is it all luck then? You just killed your own argument. Santos can control his outing. He got rocked because he can't locate.

I really wonder if the jays are a bit behind on defensive positioning in cases where they aren't facing a guy that demands a dramatic shift. I think Reyes was positioned towards 3B because of Francisco today and Lawrie towards 2b which is why he was closer to getting to the groundballs up the middle than Reyes. Lawrie's positioning also helped them on one of the DP's as Mercer hit a hard groundball close to the 2B bag and Lawrie was right there. When Mercer hit it, I thought it was a single.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 One thing on positioning that needs to be taken into account is that the pitcher also has to hit his spots. A couple of the groundballs that got through up the middle were on pitches that were supposed to be inside on the hitters, but Morrow left them on the outside half so the batter was able to put a better swing on it. The team is actually showing some good signs and has all season. If they stick with it, they could string a few wins together. They could actually be 16-13 right now. Good thing is that everyone is bunched up in the East, unlike last year.

o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 They could actually be 16-13 right now. Good thing is that everyone is bunched up in the East, unlike last year. that hurts more than anything. they could easily be leading the division, but cant get the D, O and pitching to all play 9 innings. Team is sadly short in depth. it's a lot better offensively without Goins. Lawrie is ticking up and has some mean power this year. If colby can get hot and Ed can get some luck the lineup will be very good offensively. they played more than good enough to win again today. unfortunately 1 inning of oops is enough to lose games.

No doubt Lawrie's range is impressive to both sides. I think he ranged to his left early in the game and threw a strike to 1B offbalance.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Positioning is not always going to win with shifts, but chances are far better. The BABIP monster will still reign though. Jays had some really good opposite field hits today. Colby going deep to left center is a big deal. he's extreme pull and only hitting low inner half mistakes this year. If he can lay off the balls and take some outer half pitches the other way he should be more stable.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Francisco showed some nice swings tonight and didn't look bad at 3rd. He will stick.

I think he ranged to his left early in the game and threw a strike to 1B offbalance. yeap... he could play just about any position. I could see him learning to play short. I think his effort level is amazing. he got to one ball up the middle that should have gone to colby. Lawie ended up 30 feet behind second base. it was still a base hit but the fact that he got to it was insane.
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 Francisco showed some nice swings tonight and didn't look bad at 3rd. He will stick. seriously? he has zero range. he's a liability at 3rd. the whole infield had to shift to help cover the s*** he cant get to. like I wrote earlier, Fransisco has to step and dive just to be able to scratch his own ass.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 AA's inertia makes me think he's very fearful of getting screwed in another trade. The only positive here is that he may have realized he did get screwed in the 2012 off season. The negative is that he's hurting a decent team by it.

Yeah, that's true. What makes it so frustrating is that he clearly recognized they needed to upgrade at 2B, SP, C, bench and he only ended up addressing one. At least the StroShow should begin in June!

What makes it so frustrating is that he clearly recognized they needed to upgrade at 2B, SP, C, bench and he only ended up addressing one. At least the StroShow should begin in June! sick that the team has to use a short bench just to have 3 losers sitting in the pen playing with themselves. The team could be better without making a trade, but unless Jose is going to move to 3rd and have Gose, Rasmus and melky in the OF Lawrie is not the answer to 2nd. Fransisco needs a fishing net to catch anything that is not hit into his glove. longest he ranged today was 3 steps in and a little to his left. most balls were past him before he moved. He's a DH bench bat at best. Lind is better defensively at first and Ed is better than both. mostly I'm just getting tired of this team giving up leads. losing is bad enough. losing leads almost every game is a killer. if it's not one thing it's another.
