flafson Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/jays-align-stromans-start-with-mcgowans/ The Toronto Blue Jays are aligning Marcus Stroman’s next start with that of Dustin McGowan, a sign the prized prospect may be nearing his big-league debut. Stroman – 1-2 with a 2.18 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 20.2 innings over four outings at triple-A Buffalo – was due to start Saturday for the Bisons, but a rainout Friday pushed everyone back a day. Yet rather than pitch him on Sunday, when his next turn comes up, the plan is for him to start Tuesday against Louisville, which coincides with McGowan’s start in Kansas City. On Thursday, manager John Gibbons said McGowan would start Tuesday as planned but his status beyond that was, “we’ll see.” The Blue Jays have regarded Stroman as a fully formed pitcher ready for the majors since spring training, and assistant GM Tony LaCava told Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith this week that “it’s just a matter of the opportunity and the right time for him. We think his time is coming soon.” Should McGowan falter or fail to pitch deep into the game Tuesday, Stroman could be in line to start May 4 in Pittsburgh.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Not sure how to feel about this. I wanted Stroman to get 2 months at AAA. Heck I even wanted Hutchison to get 2 months in AAA. Maybe Nolin after the A-S break. On the other hand, it would be exciting to have both Stroman and Hutchison at the MLB level.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 We need the value he provides. If he's ready (I think he is), him throwing in AAA is wasting pitches that could be used here. He does look ready and the stats back it up. I just wanted to play it safe as he hadn't pitched past AA yet. I guess one month was enough. It'll certainly be exciting to watch him every 5th day....assuming they don't demote him if he gas-cans in his debut a la Nolin.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Who will get DFA'ed though? I imagine McGowan would go back to the pen, 5 long relievers?
The_DH Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 McGowan will get dl, go to Florida and stretch it out. He would do what Happ refused.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 So this means what? 1. They're worried about McGowan (as they should be - he doesn't have the stamina) 2. Happ will definitely NOT get a starting job if McGowan is removed (nor will Redmond or Rogers by extension) 3. Stroman is #1 on the depth chart Sounds good to me!

flafson Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Author Posted April 26, 2014 I honestly don't know what we are going to do with all our AAAA arms, nobody wants them cause i assume we would have traded some of them by now and we can't keep them all.

Although this is good news, it really does indicate that they have no friggen clue what they were doing/planning/expecting before.
GoldBull Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I think that if/when Stroman comes up, we should just cut our losses with Redmond & Rogers and just DFA both of them. I'd much rather Wagner and McGowan in the pen than the two of those guys.

I think someone will take Rodgers, Redmond or Happ, I just don't think they want to give up anything of value for any of them since they know AA cornered himself.

I think this isn't entirely fair. They planned on having Happ as the 5th starter and were high on Hutchison since ST began. Happ s*** the bed and while that's not a huge surprise, Hutchison earned his starting spot. I'm more disappointed in Dickey than anyone else. McGowan/Redmond/Rodgers/Happ need to pitch like #5 starters.

The_DH Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Stroman is not pitching a lot of innings per start either. Buerle seems to be the only efficient starter we have anywhere.

The_DH Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Just heard Zaun on this subject. He doesn't think Stroman is ready and needs a full season. Also that the team has screwed around with McGowan this year.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Stroman 2.66 SIERA in AA (66 SIERA-), and 2.46 SIERA in AAA (62 SIERA-). He's ready. How does that compare to Nolin?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Stroman 2.66 SIERA in AA (66 SIERA-), and 2.46 SIERA in AAA (62 SIERA-). He's ready. How quick does SIERA stabilize? It hasn't been that long in AAA. But yeah, he's ready. That's disgusting.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Zaun seems to think that all pitchers should not get called up to the big leagues until they have won a couple Cy Young awards first. Ideally, yes, Stroman would spend more time at AAA and maybe have to deal with some failure there against more advanced bats than AA for longer than a month, but when the team thinks it's competing for the playoffs, you don't get that luxury.
Convo Verified Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Nolin had a 2.88 SIERA in AA last year, and is at 2.88 this year in AAA. Nolin's high A was 2.92 in 2012. http://minorleaguecentral.com/player?pid=543594 Love Nolin.
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Around same as xFIP. Not stable yet in AAA, but it's in line with last year. Jfas, Would Dickey be a Super Long man? Would He hold somekind of Reverse Effect as well. Could he not pitch pitch 2-3 innings every other day! and would not his dickey effect screw with more teams timing this way maximizing his effect?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 I'm not sure, it'd be more of a theory and not really testable. I think maybe throw him every 3 days through the lineup twice might be best, but it may also not be enough to leave as much of a lasting impression on the hitters. But he cant get though the lineup twice as a starter now ! lol But if you say go once then 9 outs and then to the closer would you still not gain some ripple effect or benefit to the closer? Allowing a smaller pen and more batters on the bench!
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 What about Boyd? Could be the next Nolin...or not. Nolin seems to throw a bit harder, but super scout King says Boyd has a nasty curve. I think it's safe to say we're all satisfied with having Stroman and Nolin as SP options. At least there's some youth coming along.

Also that the team has screwed around with McGowan this year. How has the team screwed around with McGowan this year? Unless he means they've wasted starts by giving them to him instead of Rodgers, Redmond or Happ? Anyway, it's Zaun so take it with a grain of salt.
