KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 For the life of me, I can't understand why they wouldn't have built one. Because they weren't going to let the possiblity of one exceptionally nasty winter get in the way of building the nicest stadium possible. Retractable roof stadiums don't compare in the slightest to open air fields. Look at Chase Field, the place looks just like a dome even though it's a retractrable stadium. Most years the weather isn't this bad and the few times that it will be are well worth the trade-off for having a true open air stadium in the summer.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Will they play 2 tomorrow or make up at another time?

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That's a good reason. Thanks. I think a lot of people are looking at this from the perspective of how annoying it is for a visiting team but from the Twins perspective, it was very important to have a stadium experience that was the antithesis of the Metrodome. It was a decision that came with some cost but I think if you polled baseball fans in the area, they would tell you this is what they wanted.

HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 That doesn't bode well for our bullpen at all.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Safeco does look a lot better than Chase. I wonder what the secret for that is. Chase field is still a beautiful park and doesn't look like the concrete bandbox the RC is at all. Maybe its just me, but I dont understand the appeal of sitting in the cold for 3 hours just to get a "real baseball atmosphere".
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 idk I think with modern architecture you can make a nice retractable roof stadium thats comparable. Even Miller Park is really nice. Its not only in April, but in October and potentially November its much safer for the players and more comfortable for the fans to have a retractable roof. They're the most Northern city in the league, this isn't the only April they've had problems. The snow storms a couple years ago forced them to play home games in Milwaukee

Split double-header tomorrow at 12:10 and 6:10. Dickey v. Pelfrey /McGowan v. Gibson It's shame Gibson and Pelfrey are both righties. It would have been preferrable to have a left in there to vary the lineups although Thole will definitely get the Dickey start and Diaz might as well get one of the SS starts just to get his glove in there. Hopefully Lind is good to go at DH for both games or a roster move will be needed.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Is that 12 and 6 est? Nevermind, it's 1 and 7 here.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I don't know, but it's a little late in the game to be whining about a retractable roof in Minny, it is what it is. There were games postponed in Baltimore, NY, Philly and Detroit yesterday.

I have never actually been to Chase Field but I find the place looks absolutely depressing on TV. It seems to me to be as cavernous and drab as a non-dome can be. Maybe that averse reaction isn't that common but I think over time people will grow to dislike it just as much as any dome. Miller doesn't seem all that great to me either. Safeco does look nice and from everything I've heard, it's truly a great place to catch a game.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Looking more closely at pictures at the stadium, I think what distinguishes Safeco is an outfield that looks a lot more normal. Miller's outfield looks like an airplane hanger and Chase just looks like full on domed stadium.
JJippidy Verified Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Safeco does look a lot better than Chase. I wonder what the secret for that is. Designs are different, obviously, but it's the arraignment of the roof and roof supports that I see as what's important. If you're going to go the retractable route you need to be willing to toss in the extra cash needed, even over a typical retractable roofed stadium, to ensure as much of the roof as possible isn't within the site lines of the spectators and pushed back as far as possible. Chase field has it's roof looming over both sides of the stadium even when open and the supports out beyond centre field are in clear view, the fans are boxed in. If they had lowered the outfield roof supports to sit below the stands and had the roof sections slide over more to open up the sky it would have been a very different feeling park. I suspect the cost of doing something like that would mean hundreds of more millions. Safeco is open air even when the roof is closed, that probably made it more feasible to have the roof arranged the way it is, it slides to right field on a 45 and sits well back, plus there's no visibly clunky supports needed all around the park, it feels open and looks good because of that. vs

vs Chiming in to say exactly this. Safeco has the luxury of sitting beside a bunch of railway tracks, so they basically build a normal ballpark and just suspend the roof over the tracks when it's nice out, and then slide it over when it's not. Most other ballparks don't have that much free space to work with, I don't think. It's an awesome park and it's an unreal experience every year when the Jays are there. Can't wait for this year's trip! http://www.ballparks.com/baseball/american/seabpk70.jpg
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 Fine with me, I freakin love day games during the week. Me too. Some of my work can be done with a game playing on computer while I work. Tomorrow afternoon happens to be just such a day. Sweet.

Minnesota dropped the ball by not building a retractable roof, I dont understand that at all.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) Enhanced Dickey effect when batters face him and the next guy on the same day? Another good question! The problem is if Dickey sucks again it's offset by all the hard hit balls to the OF fence in his own game. Edited April 16, 2014 by G-Snarls
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Enhanced Dickey effect when batters face him and the next guy on the same day? There's no way there's enough of a sample size to know that but we can certainly keep our fingers crossed and hope that it will be the case.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Habs/Raptors game will hold me over for tonight. Gives our guys another day to rest. Nothing wrong with this.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 What is a split day/night double header? Day game and a night game. Most double headers are this way anyways so it's really just a bunch of unnecesary jargon.
