Laika Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Clearly the organization thinks infielder Jonathan Diaz is an even better defender than infielder Ryan Goins, since they have Jonathan Diaz at the shortstop position tonight with Ryan Goins at the less difficult second base position. I was really impressed with that RBI 1B single to centre field at bat against the tough RHP Alex Cobb. And I was equally impressed by the heads up baserunning stolen base of second base to get into run scoring position for Melky Cabrera. Also of note is that he's played ~4 innings without pulling a hamstring, so he's better than infielder Jose Reyes in that respect at least. I know this seems like a troll but I'm being serious, so please don't erase this thread, mods.

Brenner Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 So when Reyes is back do we play him at DH to keep the dynamic duo of Diaz/Goins going? Reyes is a great bench piece, can backup SS/2b and be righty platoon to go with Lindy. Maybe he can learn to play LF too.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I believe he can be a slightly below league average bat. Wait, league average is like 150, right? Let's get him 700 MLB PA just in case. threadinanutshell.jpg

Also not losing anything with Diaz at short.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2014 Author Posted April 2, 2014 Goins is playing second because he turns two better than anyone else there, going against the grain. Also not losing anything with Diaz at short. Not buying it. Diaz has 267 career minor league games at second base and he's been given 3111 MiLB PA despite a .655 OPS - I'm pretty sure he can adeptly turn a double play.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Jesus Christ I will admit his stumble was nice. His approach at the plate was also really cool. Dude walked and got a key RBI single AND stole a bag! He plays all positions almost too. He's McCoy + better approach + younger + VETRIN POSTSEASON PRESENTS

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Jon Diaz DWL (134 PA) .261/.444/.328 + GG defense
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Preemptive tongue-in cheek reactionary thread. Wise decision. Rasmus Top-10 CF approved.

8D Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 They said on the broadcast that reason Goins isn't @ SS is because he's just decent/average/adequate/solid there. But he's exceptional playing 2B. Good game for Diaz though. Hopefully he gets hot while Reyes is out.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Im just going to say is he would not do worse than Goins.
flafson Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 I love how you guys are optimistic about that pair. Can't say i blame you though.

You meant to tell me that Goins' defensive reputation is basically based entirely on last year's sample? That all this time that he's been playing shortstop in the minors he was just adequate? I thought his reputation was at least a much based on excellent shortstop play in the minors not just on his excellent play when he was converted to 2B last year. This is pretty pathetic if true. I thought at the very least Goins could was a good defensive assett at both middle infield positions. Turns out that may not even be true? He's just an average shortstop that stood on his head in a small 2B sample last year. Well that's just peaches. Really glad the team is committed to him.

I don't have a huge problem with one of them in the lineup seeing if they can survive at the plate in the majors. (though I still think we should have acquired a legit 2B to be the regular there, and have one of these 2 as backup for that person and Reyes) The big problem is having two of them in the lineup for extended periods of time. That could really hurt.

TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 In all fairness, and as laughable as it is, had someone started the Can Ryan Goins Stick thread in April 2013, he/she would've been banned.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2014 Posted April 2, 2014 Need angrioter's input on this Impossible. Ryan Goins hasn't a single Dominican gen in their DNA.
