They even tried to convert him to 3B, given their organizational logjam (JPA, D'Arnaud). A year later, we have neither of those guys and Gomes looks like the best of the bunch...

Yan Gomes is a monument towards the ignorance of the Blue Jays FO!

(watch him hit like a backup this year now)

His BABIP was .342 last year, and considering the average is .300, he's expected to regress. Most of his value is more due to his defense.

In addition, his spring numbers have shown an increased K rate and lower average. Indians would have been better off waiting until there was more certainty that he'll continue to hit. With Carlos Santana at 3B now and no decent catching prospects in the minors, the Indians are going to sink or swim depending on Gomes.

ZiPS and Steamer both project nearly 3 WAR in ~400 PA. Those projection systems would take into account the small major league sample size in 2013. His minor league peripherals would still be pretty big factors in those.

You think Gomes looks better than D'Arnaud?

You guys are putting way too much stock in 322 PA from one season.

Regardless, that trade was still f***ing ridiculous. Two very useful players for a completely useless fringe reliever.

Yes, that's true for sure.

wow.. Im sure this has to come from what they see outside of gameday.. they surely didn't base a deal like that on last season.. you wouldn't think anyway

It seems like it would have been smart for them to wait another 1/2 year or so.

Pretty surprising. One would think any club would wait at least one more full season before extending him.

They must really love this kid.

To be fair, nobody thought he was going to be a starting caliber catcher at the time of the trade.

I love deals like this. Truly they are pretty low risk and two of these 6 years are option years. Alex Avila will make $2.9, $4.8 and $5.2 over his arbitration years. Pretty sure that was the comp used.

No, but there was talk of him being a super utility guy at the time (playing 3B, 1B, and some C). You don't give up young, versatile talent like that, especially when you have such a gaping hole behind the plate.

Question is why not? Why was he able to move up to the majors and put up a lower K-rate than he did in the high minors. Why did we move him off of catcher, when he's getting really good reviews from the metrics as well as the scouts? Sometimes players just find their game, sometimes it's just a lucky few months...but overall another org sees enough in him to commit to him for the rest of the decade and we saw little in him over 5 years.

Nobody was shedding a tear when we dealt Gomes for Rogers, so let's not pretend now that everyone saw this coming.

Really? Trading Gomes and Aviles for a reliever wasn't well received IIRC

We're all amateurs though with limited info to work from, its not our career or what we get paid big bucks for.. you can question the org even if you didn't see it coming.. that said, of course all orgs will miss at times.. just Jays don't seem to have many "hits" to balance it out

Yeah I believe a lot of ppl disliked it not because of thinking Gomes would be good... but it didn't make sense with Jays depth structure.. I know I disliked it

Hey guys, remember when two garbage utility guys and DFA candidate cast-offs turned into HR monsters for us? That was fun.

Also, I had no idea that Gomes could actually catch at the time of the trade. I was viewing him as a corner infielder. Now I'm hearing that he's a great framer and has elite pop times. I had no way of knowing that then because the Jays didn't like him behind the plate.

Interesting tidbit from the Edwin feature on Sportsnet today - AA says that the Blue Jays didn't even want him included in the Rolen trade. They fought to not have to take Edwin on, but the Reds insisted on it to make the salaries and everything balance out.

I was always under the impression that at the time of the trade to acquire him they at least kind of liked something in his skillset (even if he turned into 3B poop and they ended up DFA-ing him down the road).

Really? I remember liking him behind the plate. Didn't know he was THAT good but he had 50 innings back there in 2012. I disliked it cause of Aviles, though. I liked the idea of moving a capable gloved shortstop with a below average bat to second base and reaping the defensive benefits.

Gee, guys, that sounds like a good idea. Why aren't we trying that?

This, most of us didn't expect Gomes to become much but after being gifted Aviles and just giving him away for practically nothing that made it harder to swallow.

A lot of people were against this trade when it happened. You were highly in favour of it though! Has your opinion of Gomes changed?

"I was fairly impressed with Gomes' defense while he was here. He can play passable defense at several positions, including catcher, which will give you some nice flexibility. There's some power in his bat, but his swing mechanics are incredibly inconsistent and I think you'll find that he struggles to hit more than .220 or so."

We traded Rolen for Edwin. But I will give you Robinzon Diaz for Bautista.

The Blue Jays didn't even want him in that trade though. The Reds forced them to take Edwin to make the trade work (salaries and s***).
