I like the idea of signing Santana to 1yr 14m but f*** me he is starting to be a pain in the ass. If I am the O's Twins or Jays I am more or less saying this is my offer I am not calling any more. What a gong show this guy is turning out to be.

If he sucks this year, he won't get a QO so he will be free anyway.

If he's ok he may or may not get a QO so if he gets one he takes it and ok, if not then he's free anyway

If he's really good he will get a QO but teams will still sign him because he's proven himself to be worth it.

I honestly don't see any bad options for him to take a 1 year deal. The only risk is injury.

Could they backdate the contract to the second day of the season?

In the meantime, have him work out in Dunedin unofficially.

That's an interesting idea.

I told you Santana is a f***tard.

I wish he signs with some other team with that agreement that they don't QO him, and he ends up having the worst year of his career, to the point where a QO would be a huge raise on what he'd otherwise earn in his next trip to Free Agency. The team can then just say "Well you made us promise not to qualify you.. so f***off and go make league min".

What the what? "Backdate"? The second day of the season is in the future, not the past. And, no, you can't circumvent the rules like that. In order to be in camp, he'd need to be signed to a minor league contract, at least.

I mean forward-date the contract then lol.

You still sign it now but enter April 1st into the date fields. And don't file it to the league until then.

I've thought a lot about why this guy wants to sign within the AL East, where he's been historically bad, for 1 season to prove that he's worth a big contract... We can at least credit him for that can't we???

I am sure that would be frowned upon by the league. They would not want this to become a loophole in negotiations.

Good luck with the Twins Santana. That would be so dumb for the jays to lose a pick and not have the right to QO him after only having him for 1 year. Does he think his value to this club over 1 year is so incredibly important that they should sacrifice that for him? lol like as if he's the missing link to the Jays winning the world series. Please pass on him if this is true.

Jays only make the playoffs with him IF Morrow stays healthy, Hutch has a huge year, and Dickey plays like he did in the ladder part of last season and the lineup stays intact. Seems far fetched a deal with no option of a QO makes little sense for me.

Yep. Not being able to receive a QO is never a bad thing for the player. If they're worth a 1/14 contract, they'll get it on the open market.

These qualifying offers are a construct of the new CBA, effective 2012-2016. Orlando Cabrera hasn't played in the majors since 2011. Therefore, it would not be possible for Cabrera to be such a case, even if it was allowed, which it is not.

It is expressly forbidden in the new CBA. It can be found on page 90. Article XX-B(5)© states:

"A Club and Player (or their designated representatives) shall

not enter into any agreement, understanding or contract, or make

any representation, promise or commitment, whether implied or

explicit, either orally or in writing, that the Club will not make a

Qualifying Offer to a Player, or that a Player will not accept a Qual-

ifying Offer if one is tendered to him. Any Club or Club employee

that violates this provision will be subject to discipline by the Com-

missioner, including the potential forfeiture of draft selections."

Now, it explicitly states that there will be punishment for the team involved, but obviously decertification of an agent promoting this would be likely, and there would also be the potential to invalidate the contract and otherwise punish the player involved, directly.

Awesome, you even found the source.Thanks.

No, we can't give credit to Santana that only two teams are interested in him, and both just so happen to be in the AL East. There's a reason he wants to join a club that has a good offense.

lol it's really easy to change the answers in that. Morales and Drew are doing much more damage.

I'm not convinced he does want to. Part of me suspects this is his agent trying to make a splash after leaving the other agency and put one over on teams. Watch him sign in a pitching friendly park after all this.

Not sure why some people are indifferent to signing Ervin or don't want to sign the guy. The money isn't going to be reallocated to Drew if they don't get Santana.

We'll lose a 2nd round pick. Big deal.

Get this done AA.

Not worth it. The QO was essential to the deal.

Should it though? The team wasn't comfortable giving one to Johnson this year. Do we think they will be more willing to give one to Santana after a year of pitching his home games at the Rogers Centre? The option to Q.O. is nice to have but I don't think you should ever sign a player with the assumption that you're going to give a Q.O. So much can change between now and then. Frankly if you think you need the comp pick atttached to the Q.O. to justify the signing than the signing probably isn't justified in the first place.

I see him as medium dark, 5'8" with a massive mustache.
