9:08am: The Blue Jays are willing to offer a deal in the $14MM range with no incentives, Heyman writes. The Orioles may be a bit behind the Blue Jays. The Rockies, meanwhile, may be out of the bidding, as Heyman tweets.

Shoulder issue? Not fixed.

Knees? Not fixed.

Problems related to triceps inflammation and forearm strain? Indeterminate, as bone spurs are likely not directly related, which is what he had fixed.

Other than that ... he's good to go.

He passed a medical in signing with the Padres and an MRI would show a shoulder tear. His issue with tightness in his forearm/elbow are related because he said he changed his mechanics to compensate for the soreness he felt. Right now, he says he's feeling better than last year and they are already working on his mechanics to bring him back to where he used to be. Listen, it's all opinion on how he will perform until he does, my belief is that if this team had 14m for a pitcher, we should have just QOd JJ.

But if he signs him, is he officially back as the ninja we all envisioned when he got rid of Wells's contract?

It was a joke, but no, signing Santana would not make up for the bad trades he's made in the last 20 months or so.

Obv not

He's said all along he'll wait until the price is reasonable. I, like many, was impatient wanting to sign everyone NOW! But if he actually sign Santana for $14M, I will trust in him once again. It's a ninja move in my mind.

If the M's outbid Toronto, hard to really blame AA. Even on a 1 year deal there's a price where it starts to not make sense.

If you go much higher than 14M, then you start paying for more production than you're likely to get.

He's probably a 2 win pitcher. That's even money at 15M. Factoring in the draft pick, and the market price for one year of Ervin is probably closer to $10M or $8M.

If Jack Z wants to drop 14M+ a draft pick for a league average starter, f*** it. Let him.

Thing is I see WAR evaluations as nearly irrelevant in 1 year deals. Or at least id be willing to "overpay" because of the term.

They dont really impact the future finances or establish a trend within the narket that the club will overpay going forward - unless you're willing to sign a 1 year deal.

WAR does't take into account the value of short term deals for a club either and there is value there off the field even though it eludes inclusion into the formula.

Second round pick for 200 innings, this club needs that trade off, that's just the reality of its situation, something else that WAR cant take into account.

He's more valuable to the Jays than whatever the standard market worth of a win is.

Im fine with an overpay because of all that one a 1 year deal, Id rather not, id rather it be soneone else, but if hes it then even 15-16 for one year, id bite the bullet.

I'm giving him this season (like I have a choice). I'm still praying things work out.

Incidentally, that Happ thread is interesting...maybe something is brewing on that front, to give him the bum's rush.

They didn't know how the offseason was going to play out. If they were only ever going to get one pitcher and had something like 14m to spend, then it makes so much more sense to have gone through the entire offseason and got a guy like Santana now, than to sign JJ in November and close the book for the rest of the offseason, without knowing what opportunities presented themselves. There are plenty of legitimate arguments to be made against the Jays offseason, but it's kind of retarded to just judge what a team should do based purely on hindsight while disregarding chronology completely.

Apparently Middlebrooks has looked terrible at 3B and Bogaerts has not looked so great at SS either and he would be better off at 3B instead of Middlebrooks. There's talk that playing SS for Boston may be back on the table for Drew.

At the end of the day I am pretty sure Drew is back in Boston.

In Jays camp today. No confirmation of an agreement with Ervin Santana. But some in the organization are optimistic about chances.

If we have 3 locks for 200+ ip then we might be able to go to a 7 man bullpen. An extra bat might help.

Sign Santana and trade relief surplus for a 2B (unlikely) or a real platoon mate for Lind (more likely), and we're good to go. Still don't like Goins at 2B, but that's about the best the Jays could do at this point.

I think the Jays are happier with Sierra as Lind's platoon mate than they are with Goins as the 2B. But I'd love to see Happ, a reliever and a prospect traded to Seattle for a 2B.

One year is too long for them.

All of these "sources" saying that we made an offer. I won't believe it until I see it. We've been fed this horseshit multiple times during the AA regime and it's almost always turned out to be untrue.

A pen of Jannsen Santos Loup Delabar Jeffress Redmond and Cecil would be useful. 12 pitchers, 13 bats.

You prefer Jeffress over McGowan and Redmond over Rogers or are you thinking they'd be traded for a 2B or platoon partner for Lind?

This is one of the few times where I actually am believing the rumors here since it makes to much sense to not be true.

You mean like with Ubaldo? It made 100% sense there too...

Plus when Ken Rosenthal is involved in reporting it, it lends considerable legitimacy to the reports.

No I expect McGowan to start until he explodes and they seem to like Jeffress more. Either of the two is fine for me though. This team is not turning around based on the 12 th pitcher.

I don't agree with this at all. Bringing in a couple of career backup catchers and a 2-win starter is still a giant failure of an offseason. The team is going to project at like 82-84 wins even with Santana. This just makes their remote playoff chances a bit less remote.

Ok, let's just say that it "somewhat salvages" the offseason. Obviously not trading some of the pen depth and upgrading 2B's are still big failures.
