In response to OP:

Burn down Rogers Centre

Collect insurance money

Use it to watch as all the good free agents are scooped up

Light it on fire and jump in it

Pretty good, but I think a more Jaysesque approach would be:

Fail to make needed maintenance upgrades to the Rogers Centre

Watch it collapse

Hand over insurance money to parent company

Draw up plan for new stadium

Fail to hire a contractor

Sit in a dark room and wait to be fired

So what could go wrong with the other teams?

We know the jays have lots of "IFS", but when does age catch up to Ortiz? Can Napoli avoid reinjuring the hip? Is Lackey's 2013 performance here to stay? How about Victorino? Does Texeira come back to what he was? Will Ellsbury and Longoria play in more games than their 120+ 3-year average? Is Sabathia starting to decline and when does age catch up to Kuroda?

There are probably more questions to bring up, but Ortiz's performance continues to amaze me.

Isn't this question kind of late, in hind sight, you can get slammed. AA and this Org has failed miserably. No matter how you look at it, money seems to be an issue, I was wrong, I thought they had it.

Even if money was an issue they could have filled some needs pretty cheapily (baker, gentry)AA seemed to just have tunnel vision on a SP and didn't adress any other areas.

When it became obvious that lesser FAs with attached compensation were going to be left high and dry, I would have extended offers in the range of 1/14 to Drew, Jimenez, Santana and possibly Morales.

With protected first round picks, the second, third, fourth round picks the team would forfeit in 2014 are less valuable than the supplemental picks these players could potentially net the team for 2015.

There's undeniable risk involved in this strategy, as it is far from certain that events would play out as I've outlined them. However, this tactic allows the team to capitalize on their unique position to improve the major league roster this year, while not crippling the organizations financial future or acquisition of amateur talent.
