Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Ranking international guys who will never see a day in the minors on a prospect list is pretty dumb.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Tanaka shouldn't even be on the list.. he's pitched in Japan since age 18 at their highest level, which is the equivalent of AAA/AAAA. Until we see him in live action, we'll have to wait to evaluate.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 Could be missing something, but A.J. Cole is the most glaring omission I see. Young in the high minors, 95+ mph fastball, lots of K's, very few walks. Breaking ball needs work, but he K's advanced hitters with ease.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 d'Arnaud will only succeed if he stays healthy and improves his swing, and isn't a product of being in Vegas for so long. He can't expect his walk rate to stay high, especially as pitchers adjust to him. Marisinick needs a fair amount of seasoning in the minors, as the Marlins rushed him to the majors, not allowing him to improve his plate discipline in the minors. Syndergaard will be the real deal, depending on how his curveball improves. Nice to see Aaron Sanchez and Marcus Stroman in the top 100.. we will likely see them both this year, as Stroman will be in AAA, and Sanchez in AA.

There were reports last year that the Mets were just floored by the quality of D'Arnaud's catching in his short trial last year. He probably won't need to hit to provide value although he'll be as stud if he does.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 #20 on Kevin Gausman.. he has a lot of work to do in order to improve his fastball. It explains why the O's blew $50M on Ubaldo Jimenez. And of course Dylan Bundy won't be ready until June.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 True. But he MUST stay healthy. He would've made it to Toronto before the Dickey trade if he hadn't kept getting hurt. At least he would've been better than JP Arencibia. At least the Jays have AJ Jimenez coming..

I love how you and a couple other knuckleheads on this board are the only people in the world that are high on him.

BP has him 53rd and fangraphs has him 47th, we're not the only ones. They have had guys with worse numbers and stuff in the top 20.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Boston has a lot of depth in the top 100.. outside of Bogaerts(who's a stud and ROY candidate), whether they succeed or not is another question, especially with guys like Webster, Bradley Jr., Cecchini.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Rays farm system has taken a few hits in recent years, as Jake Odorizzi is the only one in the top 100. Perhaps the pipeline is starting to run dry, and they need a David Price trade to refill? They really should have traded him..
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 The will before the start of next year guaranteed.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 And we all know how bad the Yankees farm is. Gary Sanchez is the only one on the list, as guys like Mason Williams, Tyler Austin, Slade Heathcott and Manny Banuelos, along with Dellin Betances have all seen their stock plummet due to injury or poor performance. Better pray Ellsbury, Beltran, McCann don't get hurt.

I suppose they just couldn't find anything comparable to last year's Shields trade.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 20, 2014 Posted February 20, 2014 Not a massive fan of this list (although, it's fairly friendly to my dynasty league roster). I'll never understand the amount of love that Nick Castellanos gets. I'd question Franko as high as #17. I look at how high guys like CJ Edwards and Andrew Heaney are, and I wonder if ERA is slightly influencing these rankings. I mean, Heaney higher than Mark Appel already??? Towards the back end, I'm not in love with a lot of the "safer" older guys (like Lindsey, Webster, and Paxton), but I can see the argument for them. Furthermore, there are far too many Red Sox prospects in general. That's a sign of a bad list.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2014 Author Posted February 20, 2014 Anyone want to explain to me what is happening with the Phillies and Ben Wetzler? Sounds to me like they were pissed off that he didn't sign and decided to reveal that he used an agent. Kind of the same thing we did to James Paxton but on purpose. This will either make guys afraid not to sign with the Phils or cause players to resent them and not sign, I'm not sure yet.
