Well I can honestly say i hope the guy is closer to bust than elite but you right Vik . No one knows how he handles the majors and the transition . Lots to adjust to and not just baseball , Culture , living in New York , all the travel Etc Etc . Many who were good MLB players could not adjust to playing for the Yankees . Burnett comes to mind .

He may not be what most want but at least we would know what we are getting for the price that is paid. Contracts in MLB right now are such huge gambles and more and more often we are seeing these larger gambles turn out disastrous. Paying a guy like Ubaldo 50-60M is not going to cripple the franchise. Tanaka on the other hand would have a hard time living up to that $25M per season deal and more likely than not probably doesn't.

They could sign Tanaka and still fill 3-4 other holes via free agency. If the Jays had the money for Tanaka and that's all, I would have rather signed Jimenez, Infante or Drew and Baker anyway for the same total $.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I still think the Drew rumours were just that, Beeston and Boras just don't like each other. I'm still hoping for Burnett and Capuano, with a trade to snag Espinosa. Money can change that in a hurry. Capuano is a nice option that gets heavily overlooked. He should come super cheap at this point. I would be happy with Drew and Capuano to be quite honest.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 I'm greedy mate, sign the hurlers and land a MIF with excess pen arms. Greedy f***er

If the Jays had the money for Tanaka and that's all, I would have rather signed Jimenez, Infante or Drew and Baker anyway for the same total $. Money in the game is shifting. Look at Freeman's extension and recent pitcher deals for arms that aren't even front or even mid rotation guys. These guys are enjoying the money flowing into the game from these regional tv deals, and the costs of signing even moderate talent is going up. This scares the hell out of me for the Jays since it's very clear AA is not interested in paying those kinds of prices to try and improve the team and recent history is showing that the talent development system is really suspect. Combine those two factors and the future looks pretty grim. You can't trade for everyone Alex and your farm system isn't good enough to make up for ignoring the free agent market as a way of acquiring talent. Sure, every year there will some guys out there that turn out to be bargains for a variety of reasons, but even then, there's no reason to think AA has eyes on these guys and even if he does... Waiting them all out isn't a viable strategy that will pay off every year.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Freeman is a franchise player. Braves are just trying to lock him up before he hits free agency, similar to what the Rays did with Longoria. And that money train won't last forever, especially if the cable rights bubble bursts. Don't forget the mess in Houston, and the questions regarding SportsNet LA for the Dodgers. People aren't going to continue to pay increasing rates for sports like these networks are trying to get.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 True.. but he's all Atlanta has right now. They're paying for potential for him to become a 30-40/100-120, or a potential 40 2B/40HR guy when he hits his prime. Keep in mind he's only 24. He's more likely to stay in Atlanta than Justin Upton, who will be a free agent in 2016, and is having the same inconsistency as his brother BJ, who is already an albatross on the Braves along with Dan Uggla.. Jason Heyward has also been just as inconsistent, and the Braves are still waiting for him to break out. And they're going to likely trade Kimbrel possibly this season due to his escalating salary.. Mike Trout on the other hand is going to dwarf Freeman on money and length when he negotiates a long-term deal with the Angels.. he's already looking at $10M+ for his first arb eligible year.. he's easily going to be $20-25M/year to cost the Angels when they need to sign him long term. It'll likely cost the Angels $200M+ just to keep him from leaving..

You also are not incorporating any added costs with increased ticket sales and those costs would be significant. Also to add to that, Rogers heavily underpriced the TV contract. While it's obvious it is worth more, from a strictly Jays operational standpoint it is not.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 He better be a f***ing ace with the money they gave him. This better not be the new market for a third starter or baseball is f***ed. tanaka has been a stud...I think he will comfortably earn his money, which is hard to say given that he's being paid 175 mil...but I think he's that good.
