This is really too bad. With Hayhurst out too I wonder who they'll go with.

Wilner would be fine (better at that than what he's doing now) but reported friction between him and Howarth (a hardcore Cito guy) probably make that impossible. Zaun could do it but I don't know if they move him since he's carved out a niche for himself as a TV loudmouth. There's any number of ex Blue Jays who could do it (Barfield, Fletcher, Cruz Jr., etc.).
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I would be for Wilner taking over as it would keep him off of twitter for most games and i'm not a huge radio listener anyway. Won't happen until Jerry retires.
jays_fever Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 He was similar to Zaun in the sense that when he spoke about on the field things and shared past experiences/stories he added a lot. When it came to evaluating players, he left a lot to be desired.

My take on Wilner is he's just the working stiff. Stood up to Cito, no one had his back, so now it's just another day another dollar. Taking care of his family. If true then f*** Jerry Howarth. You are saying he won't work with Wilner because of Cito?? f*** all of them. Blast the entire thing apart, everyone fired inlcuding the suits, Jerry Howarth and down to the home hardware 5th inning sweeper guys. Wilner and Gibby can stay. If any one else is deserving to stay Wilner and Gibby can make up a list.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Meh. Never wanted him in the first place.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Meh. Never wanted him in the first place. he did a good job, he's no alan ashby but was surprisingly good. Howarth is very overrated and wilner is just plain awful. Give zaun a try or get some fresh blood
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 They've been essentially grooming him for it for a few years now. To be realistic these guys all want to go home given the chance. Ashby, Morris, whoever. So if you go outside for someone your always at risk to lose them when a job is available in their home town. Wilner seems to be getting better. Why not at this point.
flafson Verified Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 As long as we have Buck, i'm fine with anyone they choose.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 I would like Jose Cruz to relieve either Zaun or Morris. I watch MLB.tv and rarely listen to the radio so I didn't get much of either guy. Tablet is the most glaring need for an upgrade. Bring back Shulman and add Cruz IMO.

Wilner has nobody to blame but himself. Have you read the transcript of that infamous press scrum? Wilner was trying to humiliate Cito. It wasn't enough that he had a popular blog and radio slot and Twitter presence in which to inform and educate the fans about Cito's uselessness, he had to try to cut him down in front of the Toronto media. Anyone who followed his stuff knew this was a long time coming. He has an ego the size of a planet and will demean, admonish, manipulate and even be hypocritical in order to seem like the smartest guy in the room. Not an endearing personality, and a google search for his name will confirm he is not fondly thought of. The frustrating thing is that he is a brighter baseball guy than anyone else in the Toronto media, but he has never harnessed it into top-notch professional broadcasting. That ego keeps getting in the way, and the Cito shitshow was a check that he needed.

I quite liked him the times he was on TV.

Look I know any sentence with "Cito" in it sends you into a fit, but I really can't imagine anyone enjoying Wilner more than Howarth.

Yep, especially when we're talking about these guys being play by play men, they don't need to know the value of a walk, they just need to make it sound pretty when it happens.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Hard to go wrong when you have the best in the business , Jerry Howarth, doing half of the innings. I'm sure they'll bring in someone decent.

Yup, not everything in baseball needs to be modernized. Also, good to see you back on the board.
