DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Depending on who signs Tanaka, we could see a starting pitcher from that team possibly shake loose in the aftermath as well. Edwin Jackson perhaps? He's definitely not a top of the rotation guy, but his contract looks a hell of a lot better now and he's reasonably solid. More likely from their division rivals. Contenders don't trade top pitchers.

Well I didn't say top pitcher, but the Cubs aren't a contender (hence Shark or Jackson). If the Dodgers get him, they'll have 7 or 8 starters. One or two pretty much HAVE to go.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I think Price. Well, luckily he doesn't have the minor league pieces to do it. I don't see him opening up a big hole on the roster (like an Edwin) just to fill another. But s***, if we were gonna overpay for a SP I wish it was Price last season instead of Dickey.. if we were gonna trade TDA and Synder anyway.. I would've rather added Sanchez and Gose and had a shot at Price. Not that I would've done all four of those guys for Price.. but when factoring that or the RA deal I would.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 JFaS('s projections) likes him as well.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Contenders don't trade top pitchers. Well, Tampa and Oakland do when they know they won't be able to keep them after arbitration. Price will get 175M or more when he hits free agency.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 Heh, I didn't realize Capuano was a free agent. I thought his option had been picked up.
theblujay Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 You seem confused as usual... this team isn't in a position to pay almost $40m for the services of MB and Reyes unless they're planing on competing. I'm not saying it's gonna happen, but to completely write them off at this point and to suggest experimenting with unproven marginal talents is not being realistic. I'd rather them blow it up. Salary dump like Red Sox and Agon. How did that work out for them....

Price will get 175M or more when he hits free agency. And they will do so knowing they are taking an immediate step back for prolonged success. Only big pocket teams seem to be in on Tanaka though.
GNick Verified Member Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I'm split on this decision myself. I really like the potential I see with the bat, but the defense and base running scares me. I don't imagine it is death defining if he is 25th man. Not like he will separate us from a playoff spot or not

Like I said, you're not being realistic. Going all-in and folding within a year is not an option for The Fat Greek. His only choice at this point should be adding a few wins to the SP, 2B and the bench and hoping for the best, or do as you're suggesting and give AB's away to flakes like Goins and Sierra and in the process ruin the the slim chance there is to compete.

If AA isn't willing to do what's best for the future of this team then we need a new GM
