Larry Walker 1997. Home OPS of 1.169 road OPS of 1.176. 33 stolen bases, 12 outfield assists and 2 errors. A rare 5 tool player. He could run, throw(one of the strongest most accurate arms of all time), play defense, hit for average and hit for power. Do people not realize how good this guy was defensively? I'm glad I'm 38 years, old enough to remember seeing him play countless games with the expos. Lucky enough to have seen him play live in person, albeit just one game.

Larry Walker is the only player in all of baseball history to steal more than 25 bases and post a slugging percentage above .700 in a single season.

He was Trout before Trout was Trout

(Before Trout was born actually LOL)

Whoever voted for Armando Benitez, Jacque Jones and Kenny Rogers should be given the Pete Rose treatment.

He was so much fun to watch...seriously...the guy did goof off...he did play so many games at less than 100% due to injuries and bad health. The game came so easy to this guy...I mean he tried out for major junior hockey at the age of 16...baseball wasn't his full time focus until his later teen years....I wish I could fly down to Denver and kick Troy Renck in the balls...

That '97 season was insane, made even more impressive by the batting average to go along with the power.

74 and 40.....seriously...how do you play 70% of the season and then call it a day....should have been the third year in a row that a Canadian team won the world series.

Yet Glavine isn't been written up as a longevity play; even all the statheads have him high on their ballots and call him a legit first-ballot guy.

I don't think he was a longevity play. He was a serviceable starter up until his last year. I don't think he should have gotten in but I see why statheads wanted him in.

Goddamn conspiracy it was!

So someone actually left off Barry Bonds, or Curt Schilling etc. to vote for Jacques Jones, Kenny Rogers or Armando Benitez.

What a goddamn farce.

Before anyone gets too upset over this, let's remember that Deadspin supposedly purchased a vote from an anonymous vote in an attempt to make a mockery of the process. This seems like Deadspin.

Interesting that with the exception of the "steroid crew" the Deadspin popular vote mirrored the BBWAA vote to a large extent; Maddux still not unanimous, and still idiots on the fringe voting for guys like Nomo, TJ Snow and Jacque Jones

Okay, so I was wrong. Someone really did vote for Benitez and co and it wasn't Le Batard.

Wow. Woooooow.

I was thinking that but I probably should rage uncontrollably just in case.

Better safe than sorry. Carry on.

Could you summarize the article? ---I'm having sex right now and I can not read.

You are a champion.

Poor 3rd world troglodyte......f*** you bitch/man or you go to the street to steal someone!!

Where the f*** is Tim Raines???

So Glavine makes it in, but Mussina only gets 20% of the vote, same with Trammell.

Jesus Christ.

At the end of the day you can't argue with the players who got in. Obviously there are guys who should be there, but Thomas/Glavine/Maddux are no brainers as well.

Someone should make a poll with the parameters of the HOF ballot (same eligible players, you can choose up to 10) and see who would get the 75% required based on the opinion of this site. There seems to be enough armchair quarterbacks here so it would probably get 40+ voters, enough of a sample size. Thing is, I don't care quite enough to learn how to make such a poll, but I would participate if something like that existed.

Where the hell is that guy who would make a poll for everything a few months ago? We sure could use him now.

40 really isn't a big enough sample size, and the fact that there's a 10 player limit is a big part of the problem, so even if it was duplicated here, it would basically just prove that it's still a broken process in dire need of being fixed.

could an online hall of fame with a better election process run by some smart fellow like fatcow catch on?

why go to all the trouble of visiting cooperstown when you can read, hear from, and watch videos of all the greats right from your living room?

It'd still be interesting to see if this board can come up with better results than the writers given the same restrictions, since there is a lot of chest thumping over how moronic the BBWAA is.

Of course as I write this I realize the whole premise of being "better" is flawed. Of course we're going to judge it better because we would vote on it. It'd be like me being in a room with 10 other guys and unilaterally deciding I'm the most awesome one there.

I see a problem though, you can only vote in 15 player intervals.

Hmmm...I'd say just to take the top 15 and hope that no one would have voted for Hideo Nomo and friends, but there are 22 defensible candidates to vote for on the ballot (basically everyone Palmeiro and higher)
