Jays Verified Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Santana's fastball used to touch the three-digit but..............long, long time ago You mean Ubaldo?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 You mean Ubaldo? Top-10 hardest throwing starting pitchers. 1-Yordano Ventura -- 102.816 on Sept. 17, 2013 2-Gerrit Cole, Pirates -- 101.885 on June 21, 2013 3-Andrew Cashner, Padres -- 101.695 on June 9, 2012 4-Andrew Cashner -- 101.632 on June 9, 2012 5-Andrew Cashner -- 101.572 on June 9, 2012 6-Ervin Santana, Angels -- 101.524 on June 25, 2008 7-Ubaldo Jimenez, Rockies -- 101.515 on April 15, 2008 8-Ubaldo Jimenez -- 101.503 on May 3, 2010 9-Yodano Ventura -- 101.497 on Sept. 17, 2013 10-Ervin Santana -- 101.464 on June 25, 2008
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I'd rather just pray that Morrow does well and the Jays don't get either. When has paying through the nose in a pitching weak market EVER worked out well for a team? Barry Zito anyone? I would take either on a 1-2 year contract...maybe 3...certainly not 4+
bbb44 Verified Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I like Santana more. Not sure why everyone is so down on him. Yeah, he had that s***** season a couple of years ago, but the guy is almost an instalock for 200 innings, and we need those types of arms if we're rolling with Morrow in the rotation. If we get Santana for 4/56, I wouldn't be that upset.I know the reason im not game for Santana in Toronto and its the exact same reason Dirk Hayhurst said n his tweet and thats HRs . The rogers center is a launching pad and Santana is prone to the HR making him a poor match

In that no hitter he threw against us, every fastball in the 9th I think was over 100, and I thought there was a few 101's and 102's.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 it's hardest pitch, NO high avg fastball. I know that, like I said in Verlander's no hitter I'm sure I remember seeing some 101's and 102's, which is why I was surprised not to see him on the list.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 I'd rather Maholm than either of these guys (cost considered). but..................We have a ton of guys like Pauly M in our roster (Redmond, Rogers, Drabek, Happ) Tanaka or Ubaldo 3Ys/15AAV
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Author Posted January 5, 2014 You into the liquor today Ang? So far today you've suggested trading for Trout and signing Tanaka for 3/45. Trade for Trout - Sarcasm. Ubaldo 3/15M, no Tanaka....Tanaka will cost at least 6/100
Chappy Community Moderator Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Rogers. Multi-Billion dollar company. Its time to put up or shut up. Why?
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Rogers. Multi-Billion dollar company. Its time to put up or shut up. No. The time to "put up or shut up" would have been before McCann/Ruiz, Kazmir/Johnson, Ellis, etc. all signed. Clearly the Blue Jays chose to shut up.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Yeah I don't understand this unwillingness to spend.. basically last off season was pointless especially when they said they planned to continue to build a contender It's too early to make definitive conclusions, but if they don't make some additions to the 2014 team then they'll have spent a LOT of f***ing capital to essentially half ass it. It will likely have all been a waste. Bringing a probable 86-87 win team into the AL East? How has that worked out for you in the past, Toronto? And they could've added bankable wins fairly cheaply with guys like Ellis, Johnson, Kazmir, etc. But now, the only half-way guaranteed wins out there seem to be costly f***s like Tanaka, Santana, and Jimenez. Trade route could still get it done efficiently though. They could conceivably get some bang for their buck with a guy like Aaron Sanchez, and spending is spending no matter if it comes in terms of dollars paid or players shipped out.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Yeah I don't understand this unwillingness to spend.. basically last off season was pointless especially when they said they planned to continue to build a contender I wonder if the new CEO at Rogers has anything to do with this? Probably not, but it's still to early to know.
vic city Verified Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Given the let down of last year and the protected draft pick next year, I think AA knows that he needs to sign one of Garza, Jiminez, Santana or Tanaka just to save face. Let's just hope he doesn't miss out on his top 3 choices and then throw the bank at the only one left. It's a tough call to make though. All 4 options come with a lot of risk. Garza has been the most consistent but Tanaka is the only one I see with a real shot at posting an ERA under 4 in the AL East (if he's at least 75% as good as Darvish). Either way, I think we're going to have to over pay for one of these guys and Jays fans aren't going to like the contract.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I wonder if the new CEO at Rogers has anything to do with this? Probably not, but it's still to early to know. Soccer contracts were massive. Someone gave the ok for them.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Tanaka > Garza >>>>>>>>>> Jimenez > Santana
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Maybe Jimenez and Santana have been the Blue Jays only top targets all along, and they're willing to splurge on one of them but are just waiting out the price (as every other team is). Santana was asking for $100M in November, it's not like AA not agreeing to that was a sign of Rogers not committing. AA's suggestion that he's reconsidering the FA market suggests to me that the Jays do in fact have money to spend, they just don't like the prices at the moment (and if Santana and Jimenez really do each want 20M / year, then I completely agree). There could be some other interesting things that come out of the Tanaka situation though too, especially if Seattle gets him. Would they then turn around and trade King Felix for example? Would they be willing to trade for a guy like Rasmus in that situation (say Rasmus + Sanchez + Gose for Walker + Saunders + Franklin or something)? Worth thinking about, as they certainly do have some logjam to clear out.
vic city Verified Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I like Zaun's comment. He calls it how it is. It just puts more pressure on Rogers to pay up.
vic city Verified Member Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 I'm not saying that's the best way to spend money but Zaun is just pointing out that we still probably aren't a playoff team by just signing one of these guys.

We're not that far off. Garza + a trade for a 2nd basemen......we should be fine.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Garza/Burnett + Samardjiza + Phillips/Drew/Ramirez/Murphy/Kendrick is pretty much the best outlook I can imagine atm.
vic city Verified Member Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Garza/Burnett + Samardjiza + Phillips/Drew/Ramirez/Murphy/Kendrick is pretty much the best outlook I can imagine atm. That would be unreal......but unfortunately won't happen.

vic city Verified Member Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Not the best outcome if Shark costs up Stroman + Sanchez+ AA wouldn't make that trade.
theblujay Verified Member Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 Garza/Burnett + Samardjiza + Phillips/Drew/Ramirez/Murphy/Kendrick is pretty much the best outlook I can imagine atm. The best outcome would be trade everyone for prospects or young players with potential. Or fire AA
vic city Verified Member Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 It's one or the other + other pieces.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 6, 2014 Posted January 6, 2014 AA wouldn't make that trade. That's the price of Shark.
