KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 "The new stadium will be constructed in a public/private partnership." That's code for Georgia taxpayers will be left holding the bag.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 I think he didn't make trades because he didn't think they were worth-while. I think he was right that time. Unfortunately he can make all the right moves in the world from here on out and it won't make up for the awful Marlins trade (and a few others). Valencia was a reasonably pickup (depending on what you though of Kratz). A solid right hand pen arm wasn't too much to ask. A starting pitcher like Lester/Shark was both enormously expensive and not even clearly necessary so I'm certainly glad he didn't do something crazy like that.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 C'mon trading Francisco and a C prospect for Headley, and taking on Prado's contract would've definitely helped. He's the guy I wanted most at the time and yes, that package would have been beyond fine. But where would we be with Prado instead of Valencia? Still not in the playoff picture IYAM. Though no worse off except for a few bucks cause Francisco is done with us anyway I'm sure. Yes I wish he had made that deal. But I don't think it would have helped enough. Just IMHO.

Agree with the former but the commitment to Prado only makes sense if you have a lot of money to burn and the Jays don't really seem to have that.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Think long term. Prado next season would be a massive upgrade over the s*** we are throwing out at 2B. Who cares if he didn't single handedly push us into the playoffs this season I forgot Prado was under contract next year, oops Headley, Drew and Johson were the rentals getting tossed around

Valencia is arb eligible I think. I could see why the Jays would have preffered the smaller commitment. My preffered option would have been to acquire Headley and worry about 2015 later.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 16, 2014 Posted September 16, 2014 Just saw Baltimore's 1997 clinch in Toronto. You know, like the 1997 team, it will be difficult to keep their team together after this season, similar to the 1997 team.. no way Peter Angelos is going to repeat the same mistakes he made back then.. plus he has less money available than back in 1997/98, when the O's were drawing near the top in the MLB, instead of being just barely above Toronto now. Based on revenues and the 50% rule, the O's, considering upcoming arb raises, they're not going to have a lot of space(if any) to keep Hardy, Cruz, Markakis..
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 From the Star today (can't find a link though): Least Valuable Player (LVP): Dan Uggla (Hon. mention: Dunn, BJ Upton, Choo, McCann) Cy Yuk (Not Cy Young): Edwin Jackson (HM to Stults, Masterson, Lewis) Rookie Bust: Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr.(BOS) Overhyped exec: Jon Daniels (TEX) Arsonist of the Year: Jim Johnson (HM: Rex Brothers, Ronald Belisaro) Worst Manager: John Farrell (HM: Bo Porter, Ron Roeniicke, Bob Melvin) Drug Suspension: Chris Davis No surprise Farrell got Worst Manager.. he's turned back into the awful manager who was so lousy that the Jays decided to bring Gibbons back. Xander Bogaerts may still pan out, though..

Vincent Verified Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 That's actually mind-blowing. Not really, who would green light Andrus...
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 For anyone interested, MLBTV is $3.99 for the rest of the season: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/94998778/mlbtv-reduced-to-399-for-stretch-run
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 Not really, who would green light Andrus... I think it's less "it's mind-blowing that he hasn't swing 3-0 more regularly" than it is "someone would try to bunt on a 3-0 count", which is several kinds of dumb.

Depends. For example, if it's a tie game, bottom of the 9th, nobody out, runner on second, sac bunting actually makes sense.... especially in a 3-0 count.

I just told you a situation and JFaS proved it's better (though marginally). "64.3% chance to score one run with 1st and 2nd 0 out. 67.4% chance with runner at 3rd 1 out." jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 LOL at McCann being LVP. Bogaerts is no bust either. Edwin Jackson had a not brutal season too. McCann got LVP votes because he is significantly overpaid for his skills, at $17M/year, which he doesn't deserve. As for Bogaerts, he really should have gotten more time in AAA for his bat and his glove. Still, he could pan out. And Edwin Jackson.. are you out of your mind? He was horrid.. and they still have 2 years left of him.

McCann has been worth 2.1 fWAR before you include framing, which I believe he is positive in that being said he is being overpaid. Bogaerts has struggled but he's still a valuable piece to keep around agreed.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 McCann's contract is good. While his framing is good that contract is not. You could acquire a good framer for much cheaper.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2014 Posted September 17, 2014 McCann's contract is good. Not at $17M/year. He was brought in to hit 25-30HR due to the short porch at Yankee Stadium and be a better option than Stewart/Cervelli/Romine, who they had last year. And he's a product of Yankee Stadium.. take him out of there and that contract really is awful. Look at his home/road splits!
