KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 That's one team that gives no shits about defense. And yet they've not only held on to Hedges but just cleared one of his obstacles to playing time.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 I think the Padres are smart to trade Hanigan since they have Hedges and Hanigan's value will only go down from here. Don't know how I feel about Middlebrooks though.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 It worked for the Tigers when they got Prince. Yep they turned a 95 win team into an 88 win team
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Padres are signing David Ross apparently to backup Norris. Pretty nice sign. Wow, great sign. Padres making moves, lol, some better than others. Wonder what happens to Norris when Hedges is ready.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Padres are signing David Ross apparently to backup Norris. Pretty nice sign. He's really old though. Does he have anything left? I mean I guess he's just holding the seat warm for Hedges anyways so it's not a big deal but he hasn't had a productive season since 2012 and he'll be 38. I'm not convinced this isn't simply a waste of time.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Padres are signing David Ross apparently to backup Norris. Pretty nice sign. 6th catcher this week. Is it really a fit though. When do you play Ross? Putting him in against lefties takes away Norris greatest strength. It's been 3 years since Ross hit RHP at all (although he was okay at it earlier in his career). Can his solid catching make up for a 41 wRC against RHP like he put up last year.

LongTimeReader Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 He's been very productive in limited time when framing is included. He is elite. I seriously doubt any benefits of his framing make up for his very sub-par hitting and recent inability to throw out runners, in addition to getting even older.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 He puts up 1 win just with his framing almost every year in a backup role. I guess it's a solid gamble. He's probably not getting paid that much and if his body can still take it, the Padres will turn a profit. Jose Molina caught 80 games at 39 last year so it's not like there isn't a precedent but reservations are warranted.

Their odds are stacked against them. - Kemp: Declining performance with arthritis in both hips - Morrow: Somewhat injury-prone and totally unreliable - Johnson: Did not pitch at all last year and was awful in '13 (supposedly due to injury) - Ross: Aging catcher with declining skillsets - Norris: Pretty good offensive catcher with poor framing Honestly this is some of the worst general managing ever. Reeks of total desperation.

Better to do that than do nothing and create absolutely zero buzz for your team for years and years like they've essentially been doing. If I were a Padres fan I'd be pretty excited to see their new look next year.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Only move I strongly disagree with is the Kemp trade, which was one of the worst in a very long time. The rest I see both pros and cons of but are at least justifiable.

bendera3 Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 I wonder how the Padres farm stacks up now. Seems to me that after the Upton trade it will be pretty bare.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Better to do that than do nothing and create absolutely zero buzz for your team for years and years like they've essentially been doing. I hate this kind of false-dichotomy. This is exactly the kind of garbage reasoning that jusitified the big Jays/Marlins trade. It's not an either/or choice between doing nothing and doing something completely fool-hardy. You can make changes sensibly. Going all in when you're not already in a position of strength almost never works. It's self destructive. The only buzz that's worth a damn is the buzz you create by winning.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 I've seen hobbyist mechanics fixing broken s*** in their garages take in fewer pieces of damaged goods than the Padres. But I suppose with the working body parts of all the pieces they've landed this week they could cobble together a pretty good pitcher-outfielder with various patches of different skin colours. That's probably worth some WAR, or something.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Padres continue to shake things up by getting Middlebrooks for Hanigan.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 it's gonna be fun this season to watch the padres and white sox crash and burn

GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Johnny? Brandon Gomes was DFA.

Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Looks like Yanks going to aquire Eovaldi for Prado. They'll probably use that Prado money towards Asdrubal.
gbill2004 Verified Member Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 @flasportsbuzz: Marlins and Yankees have been discussing trade that would send Eovaldi and Garrett Jones to NY for Martin Prado and P David Phelps.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 The only buzz that's worth a damn is the buzz you create by winning. Off season buzz has great short-term returns for ticket sales. Winning takes about 4 years to make much of a difference. Padres are putting themselves into a Jays mode where sustaining buzz is tough and making more splashes is required.
