GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Lol I'd rather not play a SS then pick s*** off the wire and kill my ratios. Yeah I'm doing this in another league. Had Wieters, he died, got Gattis, he died, got Yadier, he died. Now I'm just forgoing counting stats in favor of not having to pick up Jason Castro or Yan Gomes.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 One man offense Crazy. They should trade him for half a team. Cause the rest of them suck.

Goldschmidt would bring back a massive haul but dealing him would crush their fanbase, Astros-style. Maybe they start considering it if they're still awful in a couple years.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2014 Posted July 14, 2014 Standard roto scoring? If so, is it a 6-team league, seeing as the 7th best fantasy catcher this season is still available AND you're poo-pooing him? 10 team head to head 7x7, weekly lineups.. How are you quantifying the best? And also, I'm dumn, Gomes has been rostered for a while. John Jaso is still available. He might be a nice add until Gattis gets back. Jaso, Suzuki, Iannetta, Martin, Castro, Navarro, Avila, Chirinos, Vogt are the only ones available. Vogt or Jaso could be nice.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 So, after the initial report that the Stros dropped their offered bonus to $5M from the tentatively agreed upon $6.5M (which was already below slot by $1.4M), it's now being reported that they actually dropped the offered bonus down to approx. $3.17M - or exactly the bare minimum they need to offer so that, if Aiken doesn't sign, they still get the #2 pick next year. Now, it still could be the case that there is a legitimate medical concern that has popped up, of which the Stros were unaware prior to the draft ... but, damn, the situation just smells stinkier and stinkier. Edit: somehow didn't see herpesderpes' link before posting ... but that references what I'm talking about ... The shady part comes from them tying Aiken to another Close client who has agreed to overslot money already. You take these guys from a shady business world (thinking Friedman and Luhnow here) they are going to treat the baseball world like the business world. If you find out info that saves you money...you use it. Coming from the investment world, I've seen worse things and it's just everyday business. I'm not sure if it's good for baseball or not but the MLB shouldn't be surprised.

I'd like to see the Rays in Montreal, provided they don't do any other realignment. Toronto & Montreal in the AL East would be all kinds of fun. Interesting thing to contemplate is the A's moving to Montreal. Then, unless you want to unbalance the divisions again, there would have to be an ALE team moving to the Central. Which would probably be us.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 More shots fired: Latest On Astros, Brady Aiken By Steve Adams [July 15, 2014 at 9:54am CDT] JULY 15: The Astros believe that Aiken’s MRI revealed a “significant abnormality,” Major League sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Aiken’s adviser, Casey Close of Excel Sports Management, tells Rosenthal that the team has made just one revised offer — a bonus of $3,168,840. That amount represents the minimum bonus Houston would need to offer in order to receive the second pick in next year’s draft as compensation. Close, who insists that Aiken is asymptomatic and healthy, offered some harsh words for the Astros and the way they’ve handled negotiations: “We are extremely disappointed that Major League Baseball is allowing the Astros to conduct business in this manner with a complete disregard for the rules governing the draft and the 29 other clubs who have followed those same rules.”

If the Astros see something on their MRI, how are they in the wrong for lowering their offer? Or did i miss some of the story?
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 More from MLB Trade Rumors regarding Aiken: JULY 15, 6:35pm: The concern regarding Aiken involves his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), a source tells Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. “He may have some [of the ligament], but not much,” the source said, apparently referring to the natural size — rather than any tearing — of Aiken’s UCL. A hypothetical Tommy John procedure would not be a straightforward solution in Aiken’s case, the source adds. While the issue may be “cut-and-dry,” per Drellich’s source, it appears that its interpretation is the crux of the ongoing debate. The young lefty has seen two team doctors and three independent specialists (including Dr. James Andrews) to assess the situation, according to Drellich. Close, Aiken’s agent, told Rosenthal that his client “has been seen by some of the most experienced and respected orthopedic arm specialists in the country, and all of those doctors have acknowledged that he’s not injured and that he’s ready to start his professional career.” Drellich spoke with an expert orthopedist — Dr. Chris Geary of the Tufts Medical center, apparently not among those who have seen Aiken — who tells him that a congenitally small UCL would not necessarily indicate a greater risk of a UCL tear or lowered success rate if a TJ procedure became necessary. Geary indicated that further information would be necessary to assess Aiken’s overall susceptibility to elbow trouble, and said that other physical attributes could mean that he is perfectly capable of pitching without any particular concern. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Guess he'd better start learning a knuckleball like RA Dickey.. we all know Dickey didn't have a UCL and had the same issue with the Rangers.

You're fully aware he was a fastball starter for years afterwards, yes? But tell us more about how this is bad news for every team not named the Blue Jays, RaysHigh95Dogg.
jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 You're fully aware he was a fastball starter for years afterwards, yes? Sorry about that, but a small UCL reminds me of RA Dickey not having a UCL. And it's part of the reason the Astros don't want to pay that big bonus. Shady dealings like this in the Astros organization is going to leave them significantly behind the Angels, A's, Rangers and Mariners in the AL West. They need new ownership.. Jim Crane is going to run that team into the ground.. I mean, this ownership makes 29 other teams look like well-run orgs. And this is the 2nd time their #1 pick has had issues.. Mark Appel from last year's draft has a 9.57 ERA/1.964 WHIP in A+ ball, and Carlos Correa got hurt, although had he not gotten injured, he'd be on the fast track. BTW, Woj is struggling in AAA with a 6.75 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP. So far, NONE of the prospects we gave up for JA Happ have amounted to anything. And this has nothing to do with the Jays.. it doesn't affect us.
