The Blue Jays are taking the same approach at second base, and for now appear content to take Ryan Goins and his plus-defence in some sort of job-share arrangement with Maicer Izturis. They talked to the Rangers about Ian Kinsler before Texas shifted gears and traded him to the Detroit Tigers for Prince Fielder, and kept tabs on Omar Infante and Mark Ellis, both of whom would likely have needed a premium on what they signed for to head north.

Really, is anyone seriously surprised. No one, and I mean no one is willing to trade prospects. As far as pitching goes, there is Tanaka, which the Jays aren't getting, Price, that would mean giving up the farm plus for, and a bunch of injury risks , like Garza etc. That there are no more guarantees with them, than what the Jays already have.

I pretty much gave up on this team making the necessary moves after the deadline passed. The fact that a Goins/Izzy platoon seems fine with our GM spells incredible trouble for this team. No chance this team competes without either two upgrades to the rotation or a rotation and 2B upgrade. The competition in the division is just too strong to stand pat.

As long as AA is fired when they miss the playoffs this isn't a worst-case scenario.

 

I think I'd want AA around if this team crashed, burned and went into another rebuild lol. Fire him when it's time to contend again.

If "looking at in-house options" means considering Stroman and Hutchison as rotation options, then I don't see the problem. If the Cubs really want Stroman + Sanchez for Samardzija, I'm glad we're out on him. Tanaka is going to be way out of our price range, so let's not go gettin our hopes up there either. Garza makes some sense, but he's got a lot of suitors.

I would rather AA do nothing, finish the season with a mediocre record and get fired; than have him pull a Jack Z, make a bunch of s***** moves to try and save his job, miss the playoffs while setting us back 5+ years, and then get fired.

This would be acceptable if we didn't already have question marks in LF and C, unless you consider Melky and Navarro sure things. An all glove middle infielder is a great way to save payroll if our rotation didn't have huge question marks after Dickey and Buehrle who both combined will average 37 years of age come opening day. It's actually a great idea, however the rest of our roster doesn't support this type of risk.

And apparently, many teams are balking on Garza. Apparently it's questions about the screw in his elbow and his injury risk. Nobody wants to give him a long-term deal due to this.

Nobody will touch Ubaldo Jimenez either due to previous erraticness outside of the 2nd half of this season. Same thing with Ervin Santana--2013 was a career year, and not worth blowing a ton of money on.

 

We're better off either making trades or seeing what we have in our farm--it is much deeper than last year with the progress of Nolin and Stroman, and the health of Hutchison and Drabek. And there's the possibility Romero might rebound as well.

Sure, but as is I think this team can't possibly finish any higher than third and more likely are the worst team in the division. It's close though, two upgrades and I think their chances increase significantly.

 

Right now this team falls under the category of pretender.

I'm not even sure I would put the Red Sox in that category. They definitely have the potential though when things go mostly right for them like last year.
