TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 with the weight he's been putting on that could take a while
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Already posted a bit and discussed. I think it could be a nice signing for like 4/52 or something.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Yeah I'd take that. Plus we wouldnt lose assets since when is cash not an asset? I shouldn't point you out specifically as we all (including myself) say it in baseball terms. It's just something that's been slightly misused.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 I'd rather see them make a bad FA signing than a bad trade where the team not only loses some prospects/younger players but the player(s) brought in are no better than said prospect or replacement could be. Plus any money spent. I'm really nervous about even thinking about the team signing him. Seems like another NL pitcher who struggled until his walk year, give or take, who will bomb in the AL East especially in the Roger Center. They've had AJ Burnett, Joey Hamilton, JJ, RA Dickey. Some were injured so you can kind of blame that. If signed he might be better than he has been and could help out. Just get nervous when players like that are brought in.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Signing Nolasco >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Giving up assets for Samardzjia. Yup. Nolasco on a 4 year deal would be nice.

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Author Posted November 24, 2013 I'd really prefer going after someone other than either of them. Nolasco would cost a fair amount to sign. His FB rate makes me nervous at RC. He's been mediocre most of his career though playing for some bad teams. He's probably a solid #3 if this year is an indication that he's turned it around but I'd rather see the Jays go after a solid #2. An Ace is probably unlikely.

Since 2009 he is 25th in baseball with 15 WAR. Tied with Gio Gonzalez, Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda and just behind the likes of Matt Cain and CJ Wilson. He'd be a phenomenal pickup.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Nolasco 4/52 Colon 2/10 Dickey MB Nolasco Colon Morrow/Happ/Redmond/Hutch/Stroman/Nolin/Romero DO IT
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Part of me thinks...do I really want a 33 year old Nolasco blocking Sanchez? But these things tend to work themselves out before it ever gets to that point.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I like Nolasco, though I think he's better suited off in the NL. He's already 30 and this deal likely would take him until he's 34-35. Plus, it's not like he has been that dominant in the NL - he's been hit or miss.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I didn't realize that Nolasco was such a under-performer to his FIP. He hasn't out-performed his FIP since 2008. He's not quite Morrow but it's close.

And I doubt Ricky's that high in RA9.

Nolasco ~7K , 2BB, 0.8 (K, BB, dingers)/9, 42% GB + Marlins D (Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, Hermida, Uggla, Morrison, Jacob, Coghlan, Cantu, Gary Sanchez, Bonifacio)

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I think my preference is: Jimenez > Samardzjia (for lesser prospects) > Nolasco > Porcello >> Samardzjia (for Sanchez/Stroman).

Randy The Robot Verified Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Also, I hate these rumors for pitching. AA should have complete focus on finding a decent catcher. Anything else he does is a bonus. ----------------------- And just throwing another trade out there, because why not? How about Sanchez, Stroman and Gose for Castillo and Samzajizaajiza? Gordonboogie shot down my Castillo/Sanchez proposal previously, but meh....this seems pretty fair.
Maine Jays Verified Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Dickey and/or Mark B would be gone by the time Sanchez is ready the way we're advancing him, so that shouldn't be a problem.
BarrysSyringe Verified Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I think we have to do what the red sox did last year. Make some moves by improving catcher and picking up a SP but hope that your players bounce back. You gotta think Morrow is better than what he showed, hes just gotta stay healthy. Buehrle has settled in and had a good second half so we can bank on 200+ innings with a high 3 ERA. Dickey showed improvements the last half of the season. Maybe one of Hutch and Drabek takes the next step in becoming a consistent starter, maybe stroman makes an impact for us. There's alot that can happen. This teams not as bad as we showed last season. Healthy seasons from Bautista, Lawrie and Reyes would be huge for us. Im not trading stoman or sanchez unless you are recieving a legit 1/2 starter back.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I'm never quite sure what to make of Nolasco. If you look at his fWAR over the past few years he'd be a pretty good buy at 4/60 or something. At what point do you start looking at ERA for a guy like this though? 4.48 ERA over the last 5 seasons (almost 1000 innings), pitching in the NL in a big pitcher's park. His ERA over that time has never been under his FIP/xFIP in a season, and is almost a full run above his DIPS over the full sample. Just 5.9 RA9-WAR over the last 5 years, all of them healthy. I think I pass on this, just because I have no idea what to expect from him. Yeah, there's a chasm there. Hard to really like a guy with that run rate in those types of parks. I'd probably take Vargas for 32 before I'd take Nolasco at the same amount, and Nolasco wants like 80M or something goofy.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 I wouldnt hate but hes a middle of the rotation guy at best. I have a feeling if they sign him he'll be one of our worst signings and it will be painfully obvious in two years he was the wrong guy for our club at that kind of money. This is one of those moments when settling for second best simply to maintain an illusion of competitiveness isn't the right move. If the market won't provide a quality starter then improve elsewhere and just go with our guys.
Caper Verified Member Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 Can Sanchez play for the big club by mid season? Or will he need a full year in the minors?
