Tigers To Acquire Prince Fielder For Ian Kinsler

By Zach Links [November 20 at 7:21pm CST]

The Tigers have agreed to trade Prince Fielder to the Rangers for Ian Kinsler, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. There could be another player involved in the trade as well, but that hasn't been confirmed, Heyman writes. There could also be money involved to offset the difference between Fielder's contract and Kinsler's.

The Rangers were in the mix for Fielder when he was on the open market a couple years ago before the Tigers signed him to a nine-year, $214MM deal. Fielder took a step back in 2013, posting a .279/.362/.457 slash line as opposed to the .287/.393/.538 batting line he posted in his previous eight campaigns. For all of the concern over his conditioning, Fielder sure has been durable - the slugger has missed just one regular season game in the last five seasons.

Aside from giving Texas a five-time All-Star with a big bat, the deal would have the added benefit of opening up second base for Jurickson Profar. Kinsler's name has been on MLBTR quite a bit in recent months thanks to the Rangers' middle infield logjam and lack of quality second base options available on the open market outside of kingpin Robinson Cano. The veteran has spent his entire career with Texas, hitting .273/.349/.454 across eight big league seasons. While not on the level of Fielder's deal, the 31-year-old has a pretty decent-sized contract himself as he is owed $57MM through 2017.

FIelder has a limited no-trade clause as a part of his contract and it turns out that Texas was on his no-trade list, but he apparently waived it to help facilitate the deal.

Wow, didn't expect THAT. In other news, Miggy's defensive value just went up.

Aren't you the d00d who thought we should keep JPA?

We can't trust this guy!

Some people on Twitter seem to think the money involved is $40 million to Texas.

Would not surprise me if some money is going to Texas. 40 million seems high though

If that's true, the equivalent of 18M / year for Prince is a hell of a lot better than 24M. They'll probably get reasonable value on that. On the flip side, Detroit paying the equivalent of 22M / year for Kinsler isn't quite as favorable.

Smart move by the Tigers. Good 2B are at a premium. Kinsler is underpaid and undervalued, Prince is overvalued. In addition Miggy provides more value at 1B.

Not sure i would go as far as saying Kinsler is "underpaid".

I have to say this is a terrible deal for Detroit

Morosi confirms that no other players are involved:

This is surely the most impactful one-for-one ever... like WTF. So much money.

He must have really been wearing on the Tigers. Poor post season performance and a really crappy attitude about it.

Aren't you that guy who suggested JPA for DH?

It's hard to see anything when you are lacking a brain.

It's getting old, bro. I know you don't think it was actually me. :) No hard feelings. you got me pretty riled up though haha

There's probably a pride thing in getting traded. Like at first you're shocked. Then curious where you're going. Texas? Wow. Then it's like I wonder who I got traded for? Wow maybe it's for Darvish and Profar! No? Who? IAN f***ING KJNSLER WHAT THE f***???

I guess the off season is no longer slow...wow! Like others have said, have to wait and see how much $ is going to Texas, but having the cheap option at 2B in Profar also helps to pay for Fielder's huge salary. Do the Tigers now go out and sign a power hitter? Adam Lind for Porcello anyone? Gotta love the off season...except for when AA is getting bent over in trades of course.
