Randy The Robot Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I think they'd prefer Cecil or Delabar to Janssen but, they probably want MLB BP innings in the deal. They could have interest in Happ/Rogers/Redmond as well. Gose alone should get you Castro... Simon Castro? Ramon Castro? Fidel Castro?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Gose alone should get you Castro... It won't.

It makes no sense for a non-contending team to want him as a major chip. Gose doesn't come close to getting Castro unless there's something seriously wrong with him that I don't know about.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Sanchez/Stroman would have to be part of the deal, no doubt.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 This is a read from a Chicago paper (so take it for what it's worth) http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/11/05/wisch-the-cubs-can-trade-castro-but-not-to-the-cardinals/ This was of relevant interest: heard whispers about the Cardinals having called the Cubs regarding Castro’s availability. According to Loxas, rumor has it that “the Cubs would want a package to center around (young pitchers Carlos) Martinez, Shelby Miller or Tyrell Jenkins and possibly a shortstop.” He then added, “Supposedly the Cards didn’t exactly hang up the phone, I’m told.”
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Probably not of interest now that they signed Peralta. It absolutely is. It's relevant in Castro's value and it's certainly much higher than that of Anthony freaking Gose.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I know people see Baez waiting in the wings and say "trade Castro" but I don't see Theo being concerned about that at this point. He likes to hoard assets and he showed that he's more than willing to trade a fan favourite if Castro does find his game again.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 They can easily non-tender Barney and move Castro to 2nd, and I've heard things about moving him to CF as well. Or maybe Baez moves off SS. Who knows. They don't exactly have to sell low on him at this point.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 if samardija better get a full physical done the guys IP have ramped up from 88 to 174 to 213 in the last 3 years with jays luck and history with Chicago teams, he will last 10 games and be out of baseball
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Probably not of interest now that they signed Peralta. I love the news coming out today, I wonder what the smaller trade AA is discussing with a team is? Picking up George Kattaras.

A quote from a source used in the article; You just know Castro becomes a perennial All-Star there. Not to mention the boon he would receive being under Yadi Molina and Carlos Beltran’s wings. Recently has posted a lot more about college sports than baseball (and covers both Chicago teams) but, that could just be the time of year. I'd take this one with a grain of salt. IMO it seems like there were a lot of names involved and this was unlikely to be a 2 or 3 : 1 deal. I do believe it shows that the Cubs are looking for a package of young pitching in any deal. Again going with their timeline of top prospects I think you could ditch some of the MLB talent in my earlier trade and go with two proposals; win nowish; Rasmus + Stroman + Jimenez + Happ/Delabar/Cecil/Rogers for Castro + Samardzija win around Baez; Gose + Jimenez + Norris + Nolin + Hutch/Drabek for Castro + Samardzija
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Janssen is in the final year of his contract. It makes no sense for a non-contending team to want him as a major chip. Gose doesn't come close to getting Castro unless there's something seriously wrong with him that I don't know about. He was offered as one of 3. They need BP help. Cecil and Delabar both have control if that's what they are looking for which is why they were also mentioned.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Refused to comment on specific players. Said they have discussed every FA pitcher, made calls to most to gauge cost/interest and has been actively talking trades to fill a number of positions (including those that currently are filled and has talked to FA for a contingency plan if he were to pull the trigger). I think Samardzija is a decent target and could be had without giving up Stroman/Sanchez. I'm sure a package of Cecil/Janssen/Delabar + Nolin + Drabek/Hutch + Jimenez + Gose for Castro and Samardzija would be enticing to the Cubs. The Jays could re-sign Rajai and would still need to sign a C and backend SP (they're trading a lot of depth) at the absolute minimum. NO mi querido amigo, NO. The Cubs are rebuilding, they don't need relievers. Gose, Nolin, Drabek, Jimenez are s***; Hutchison is semi-s*** (TJS guy). No Stroman-Sanchez, No deal.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 It absolutely is. It's relevant in Castro's value and it's certainly much higher than that of Anthony freaking Gose. Castro is on a team friendly deal and Peralta just got a haul. Peralta's deal certainly increases Castro's value league-wide.

They would also need a piece or two with upside that they believe in but, they need those innings and a controllable reliever will have some value to the Cubs.

They will eventually move Castro to make way for Baez but, it doesn't have to be now or this season.

The Cubs will adds 1 to 2 arms from Rule 5 draft to his bullpen, in other words, His major league team will be an instructional team.

I think they'll add a few BP pieces, I could see a couple coming from the Rule 5 draft but I don't know if they stop there especially for high leverage situations and the swingman role.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Its sad that there is so little activity for such a large rumor. Its what breaking up the forum did. The consequences of it. Back then such a rumor alone would have brought about pages and pages of activity Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 Perhaps, but now we have filtered out the junk.

raBBit Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Samardzija is so overrated. Fister, Quintana and others would be better options.

OtisNixonFan Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Based on what? Based on his mid 4 ERA(last season) and his penchant for giving up over a jack per 9. Perhaps?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Smardjawhatever is better than Quintana. I'd rather have fister though, obviously.
kcjaysfan Verified Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 Based on his mid 4 ERA(last season) and his penchant for giving up over a jack per 9. Perhaps? Samardzija's HR/9 was 0.01 higher than Quintana this season, and both his FIP and xFIP were lower.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I think the cubs say no Theo texted back "LOL" to a proposal once. I figure he'd do the same with anything for Castro not involving Sanchez/Stroman.
