Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Johnson is so unreliable. I'd prefer to see that money spent elsewhere. If you really want Johnson back, I still wouldn't give him the QO; at this point I bet an 8-10 million dollar offer would outbid everyone else anyway.

Does he want to be here and try again on a 1 year deal? I hope so. Because also, the "draft pick compensation" tag will really limit his attractiveness to teams this off season if he is given a QO and declines (see Lohse, Kyle). Especially for a guy with such a terrible reliability record. It might just allow AA to get him to agree to a 1-2 year deal at less than usual market value. If so, go for it. You still might get a draft pick in another year or two if he leaves then. And if he's good we have some value for once. The more I think about it, the more that's what I want. JJ on a 1 year deal at well under 14M, with a vesting option for a second year if he reaches an innings threshold or something. Do it Alex.
imsorry4beatinU Verified Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 JJ would accept the QO without thinking. There will not be draft pick. Wouldn't declining it and going to NL be better for his future?

If the LA Dodgers were willing to give guys like Uribe 8M, Capuano his contract, League his contract and Josh Johnson's out there for 8-10M, we're not getting him back. And if Johnson comes back and has a somewhat respectable year with us on his one year deal, I'd be willing to bet he turns down the next QO to look for bigger money.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 The Dodgers are the only team that can seemingly to afford to have too many decent starting pitchers and accept that 2-3 may be on the DL or suspended at any given time. And but DAMN Kershaw has been good.

If Johnson was going to settle for a low value one-year deal (as opposed to the QO), I'm not sure there's much incentive for him to pick Toronto for that. Sacrificing a couple of million dollars on a one-year deal is pretty insignificant to having a turnaround year in a place like San Diego, and then cashing in on a multi-year deal.

Sacrificing a couple of million dollars on a one-year deal is pretty insignificant to having a turnaround year in a place like San Diego, and then cashing in on a multi-year deal. It depends. I think this board is more or less right in assessing his talent, but it downplays the injury concerns as well as how other teams will interpret his numbers this year. If the Jays offer him 10 million, do you really see the Padres or Rays coming close to that? And given Johnson's injury history would he really want to leave several million on the table just so he can pitch in a bigger ballpark? I suppose their are the big market teams as well but would they even bother with Johnson?
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I thought he was just bad at home, but ya, its all AlEast. Except in TB.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Well then YOU fix the team! I already posted my way. Idk, Halladay could be nice as a back end guy, but we can't depend on him as an ace right now. And Hughes just isn't someone I would want in RC, with his fly ball tendencies.
bendera3 Verified Member Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 I wouldn't mind Doc as a back of the rotation guy either. He couldn't be worse than some of the guys we've been trotting out there and maybe his presence would add a little bit of accountability to the team

But halladay would be a solid starter. And instead of Hughes maybe someone else.

Unless he's handled his money really poorly or been told his injury troubles are pretty serious, I think he'll probably have his sights on what it takes to try and cash in on a big deal. There was talk early in the season (perhaps by his agent?) about JJ setting a record for a free agent deal. My guess is that he'd like to prove to people that this season was more the exception than the rule of what they can expect from him moving forward.
GNick Verified Member Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 I'll go first using a few thoughts I added to other threads. Please add your own ideas but without adding a gazillion dollars in spending. - Pick up Lind's option - Trade Lind and $500k to Pittsburgh for Nick Kingham - Trade Drabek and Arencibia to Arizona for Chris Owings and $900k - Sign Carlos Beltran (2-year/ $24MM + $12MM option/ $2.5MM buyout) - Sign Carlos Ruiz (3-year/ $22MM) - Qualify and sign Josh Johnson - Pick up DeRosa's option - Sign Skip Schumaker (2-year/ $5.8 MM) - Sign Jonathan Sanchez to minor league deal - Sign Freddy Sanchez to minor league deal - Sign Gavin Floyd (1-year: $6.5 MM + 2 vested options at $11.5 MM based on 180 IP/ year) I wouldn't make a rash of changes this winter. Except for catcher, put help there, rest stays relatively same. I think this team may semi-gel if they can stay healthy. At least keep them around .500 at all-star break. Then we have a more clear picture what team needs.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Bringing the Rajai Davis discussion here where it belongs and out of the Bonifacio thread. Rajai has provided fantastic value this year at a measly 2.5 million dollars. He won't come that cheap next year. He's built his value up. How much to sign Rajai for 2-3 more years? Also, would he accept the job here knowing he won't get a full time play? (Technically, he's always been the 4th OF but seems to play in about 2/3 to 3/4 of games anyway due to injuries to the other 3, his pinch running skills, and due his ability to hit LHP) Could we convince him to stay and platoon with Gose? Is that even a good idea? He'll be 32 next year and can probably get one nice 2-3 year contract before his value plummets. Will it be here? If not, where? Your thoughts please
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 31, 2013 Posted August 31, 2013 Rajai still won't get a great amount of money. He turns 33 in the off-season and players can rave about their WAR all they want they are still probably going to get paid by their slash line and his isn't great. He's a 100% platoon guy somewhere and will be paid accordingly. Personally I'd let him walk and go with someone with upside and better D, but I'm not holding my breath on that happening.

IMO, if the Jays offer less than the QO Johnson could look at it as a slap in the face from an undesirable location to play ball in Toronto and say "f*** you, I'm signing elsewhere". No pick and no player at a reduced rate. And seeing as Alex is afraid to overpay in the FA market. We either go with an in-house option A (Hutch or Stroman), pursue some piece of s*** FA that's more a #6 like Redmond as Option B, or Option C trade even more of our farm away for a 50 year old Jamie Moyer because the fans know his name. I'd prefer option A, but Option B or C would likely be Beesto.....errr Alex's suggested course of action.

I just looked up his stats. I didn't realize his BA and slipped under .265 and his OBP to .313. That's pretty pedestrian, especially for a guy who is played preferentially against lefties. He's really fallen off since his hot first half.

Minor league deals are given out by everyone each year. Replacing Lind with Beltran and getting a return makes so much sense. Carlos is a Bonifide 2-5 bat and a switch hitter. Surround Jose and EE with switch hitters and you get something like this... 1. Reyes 2. Beltran 3. Bautista 4. Encarnacion 5. Cabrera 6. Lawrie 7. Rasmus 8. Ruiz 9. Izturis/Schumaker

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Buster Olney was on ESPN radio today talking about pending free agents who either hurt or helped themselves this year. (3 each). #1 was Josh Johnson, who Olney suggested would probably have to settle for a 1 year deal at 5-6M. Seems low to me but I'd do that in a second if I was AA.
