flafson Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 He was a 10% below average hitter as a 25 year old in AAA, with minimal power and speed. He's now 26 years old, I fail to see any potential with the bat here. Only time will tell.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 You can tell by his history in the minors that he's no wizard with the bat. Obviously but we can't see the future. The way i look at him, worse case scenario he will be a bad #9 hitter but amazing on defense which will help our pitchers a lot. A reasonable scenario, he will give you .200-250 average which will still make him a fairly bad #9 hitter but still amazing on defense. Best possible scenario, he can hold his own and still give you amazing defense and the FO just hit the jackpot. Projection wise, you guys are all right, but there is the chance and i want to believe it's possible.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Your worst case scenario and reasonable scenario are the same thing. Not really, he can be worse than .200 hitter
theblujay Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 My original point was that why don't we see Goins can do, and maybe we get "best case scenario" because I thought our resources would be better used to get a couple SP and a C.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 From what I have seen from him physically, his minor league numbers just don't make sense. He hit for power throughout high school and college, but then his bat went sour when we drafted him. I think the potential is still there locked up inside his head and just needs to be properly extracted. The fundamentals are there.

Yea it's interesting, when you look at him physically, he's a healthy guy, when he makes contact with the ball you can see he can drive it to the wall. Maybe the lack of power came with the lack of contact on the ball. He did say before that he was taught defense first everything else later. Maybe he had some challenges, people around him didn't adjust him to it and it stayed that way, who knows.
fireballW Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 If Goins could even ever put up a major league season like his season in 2012 in AA then we wouldn't have a problem. The chances of that happening are slim though. Didn't someone show some research as if Seitzer was worth some wins. If he can get Goins to hit at all then it will be absolutely huge since Melky is actually looking decent and Navarro can actually make contact with a baseball unlike our last catcher.

And regardless I'm not that worried about scoring runs I'm worried about injuries to guys with no good backups (Lawrie, Rasmus) and the starting rotation. FFS was adding a quality bench player and ONE mid rotation starter too much to ask for?!?!?
fireballW Verified Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Well it wouldn't have been fair to Sierra to sign a good bench player because then he wouldn't have a chance to make the team. We would possibly lose a fringe MLB asset for nothing.

We would possibly lose a fringe MLB asset for nothing. So you give a fringe MLB asset a job just to not lose him? Maybe that makes sense for a young team with no real chance of competing but not for a team with an ageing core like the Blue Jays. If you're not trading that core than you need to surround it with bonified major league pieces. Let someone else try to find value in the likes of Moises Sierra and Jeremy Jeffres. It's a small cost for putting a better team on the field.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 (edited) Jeffres is probably a harder case than Sierra, Sierra isn't far off while Jeffres could very well be years away. I couldn't give a s*** if we lose Jeffress really f*** trade him to Cincy now after the Chapman injury Edit: For the record I'm not even remotely suggesting that he can replace Chapman or that they would use him as their closer. Just that they'll need a BP arm and might find him an intriguing option. Edited March 20, 2014 by G-Snarls
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Perhaps try Jeffress at 2B and Goins as a reliever? Jeffress isn't an asset to try to keep. You DFA him and if anyone wants him, they're welcome to him. If you DFA him now to make room on the roster and bench you have what, 10 days to trade him? Someone will probably want him.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 Hit it, gruber92: Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world Imagine Goins is a major leaguer It's really hard to do But it's something I will kill and die for You mothereffer Eff this and eff that and eff you you effer Look at Goins! Just effin look at how awesome he is you stupid mothereffer Imagine I'm actually calm and rational And not obsessed with that sexy boy toy Goins You're so gay, its unreal.

He reports what people are saying without getting too caught up in the narrative.

Convo Verified Member Posted March 21, 2014 Posted March 21, 2014 I'm rooting for the guy. I'm really looking forward to watching him play over a full season. I think he'll make a big difference over what we had in that position last year.
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Did you read Gibbons latest here saying he never said Goins was the starter at 2b? We must have the dumbest manager.
flafson Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I've never seen him say he's the guy. All i seen was an article online says that Goins is the guy cause he had a good day.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Gibbons said Goins was his 2b then got upset because reporters took that as confirmation that Goins was officially named the starter at 2b. LOL, who the heck knows, let's hope it means they'll sign Drew
The_DH Verified Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Saying he was the starter so soon is the dumb part when you go back on it later.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Saying he was the starter so soon is the dumb part when you go back on it later. That's the thing, he was also upset that reporters wrote that he wanted McGowan in the bullpen and not as a starter. He said he's on board with stretching him out. AA and him need to learn to not stick their foot in their mouths. More AA than Gibbons, but still.
