What!? Atleast Goins can supply us with good defense at his position to go with his below average offense. JPA supplies us with below average defense to go with his below average offense, and then he adds in a little bit more below average defense just because he's the giving type.

Agreed. I don't want either one them starting. If I had to choose one, I'd pick Goins over JP.

Nope. I'd rather have Goins on the team than JP. But I'd rather have JP as a full-time starter at catcher than Goins as a full-time starter at second.

They're different statements.

You seriously would rather have that bozo behind the plate every game than have Goins starting at 2B? That's ridiculous, I think you're forgetting how bad JPA is. He's abysmal defensively, he's abysmal offensively. He's a nightmare off the field. Goins has a subpar bat, but he's a defensive whiz and would greatly help the pitchers.

-1.5 is getting ridiculous.

But it really isn't. Fast's spreadsheet had him at -14.3/10000 pitches (rounded). That's about -1.5 wins which would put him at -2.1 WAR this year.

Is that just from the 2011 data though? If so, it's not fair to consider that as his current true talent level.

I'd also project him to be a better-than-replacement player in 2014 without considering framing. Perhaps he's a -0.5 win framer and a 0.6 WAR player. That's probably better than what Goins would be.

Goins ain't 28 though he's still going to get better.

And 2010. It's the best estimate we've got.

I've heard rumours of unpublished studies that have JPA's framing in the -20 run area.

Holy wow. Where'd you hear that?

Are we allowed to substitute a sheet of plywood in for a player? Because if so we should look at that option to replace JP.

Just think, you can get a good 4x8 sheet of 1/2" for around $20, so we'd save money to use else where. It would probably allow less passed balls, and give us an even +/- in framing. I'm 100% sure it would walk more. The Boston Pizza girls would still get their "wood" fix when they need it. AND the team could write messages on it so the public could see, which would replace JP's twitter.

We just need someone to carry it around and help with a couple of it's tasks. Is Cito still on the payroll?

Plus, I feel like Goins isn't averse to getting better, whereas JPA seems convinced that his game is more in need of tweaks, rather than an overhaul.

I have this device that lets me practice my putting. I get the ball in and it shoots it back to me. Maybe something like that for 2014 catcher???

November 11th 2013 and Goins is still our 2014 starting 2B.

Discuss.

Obviously, we're trading Goins and Esmil Rogers for Carlos Gonzalez. Is there any other reasonable explanation??

Goins for Tulo ASAP

Goins for Tulo ASAP

Yep Goins for Tulo straight up is what it will be. We get a good shortstop that can help us this year, although he's getting older and is highly paid. They get a young, stud SS with gold glove defence making league minimum. They really are getting the better deal here, in a few years, this trade will look great for the Rockies as Goins will hit his prime and we'll be paying big dollars for a declining injury prone player.

Are you high my dominican friend?

They'd need to throw back Cargo and Arenado to even get close. I mean, Goins is the best defensive second baseman of all time.

That offer don't favor to the Rockies, they'll ask for King Kalfus and then.........AA will hung up the phone.

So with Kawasaki likely headed to Japan, does that mean Goins has a good shot at a bench role?

Also I've been thinking about whether I would rather have the Jays role with Goins or trade Storman/Sanchez for an adequate 2B. I don;t know what the answer is...

The answer is ideally neither.

You forget about Izturis?

Right now I think everyone is trying to forget about Izzy. He shouldn't be quite as bad next year though (nearly impossible to be worse).

Posted
I'd rather use Izturis in a trade package for other needs. I think he still holds value being removed only one year of being productive. Goins is cheaper and is a shut down defender.

The sad thing is I COULD see Izzy as possible bounce back player. I could see some teams possibly having interest in him if the price is next to nothing.

Is there anybody on the free agent market who would be willing to sign for a bench role, hit around 80 wRC+ and provide good defense around the diamond?

Brendan Ryan and Clint Barmes. Alternatively, Darwin Barney if you're willing to settle for a 60 wRC+ and he gets non tendered.

Goins is good defensively sure but his bat is bad enough that he probably should be used as depth strictly.

How about Ryan Goins? Why not sign a decent defending middle infielder to a AAA contract to provide depth and keep Goins on the 25 man?

Bowden - ESPN Insider

Suggestion for the Jays to improve this season:

Toronto Blue Jays

The Move: Trade Brett Cecil, Ryan Goins, Matt Dean and Anthony Gose to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for second baseman Brandon Phillips and backup catcher Ryan Hanigan.

Why: Phillips, 32, is coming off another 18-home run season (his fourth in a row) while making the All-Star team for the third time and winning his fourth Gold Glove award. The Reds have made it clear to teams that Phillips is available. They’d like to get out of the four years and $50 million remaining on his contract so they could use it to improve other areas. The Blue Jays would love to have Jose Reyes and Phillips together up the middle, which would arguably become the best defensive double-play combination in the game.

I know it is Bowden, but that is what he would be doing with Goins

So basically Goins if you subtract a bit from the bat and add his great defense.

Ryan signed with the Yankees.

There goes my personal favorite for back up MIF next year. Assuming someone out there would have been willing to take on Izzy in a trade.

Posted
Yeah, I don't get it. Goins may be a fine bench IF, but he has options. Bring in a second fine bench IF, leave Goins in AAA, and then call him up as needed. Depth is important.

If Reid Brignac is still considered a MLB player, then, Goins deserves a chance with the Blue Jays.
