Most annoying time of year when it comes to stupid fans overreacting to meaningless samples: August/September or spring training?

This is also the time of year where Bautista had his breakout so that's always going to vindicate the most optimistic fans (whether casual or otherwise).

I'm legitimately worried this is going to become a Eric Thames situation

I totally saw this coming, I said Pillar would be the Eric Thames type but ironically his BABIP is making him look worse; it's the same type of deal for Goins, if he keeps this up for a month and dat avridge stays over .300 our GM might just let him be on the 25-man next season and we'll have another "situation" on our hands.

And when Edwin started getting hot, but at least they were good enough to stay on an MLB roster unlike someone like Goins who is probably at best a AAAA player (or a starter on the current Astros).

I don't know about you guys but i really like Goins. I feel like if we had Goins in April we would probably be 5 games better off just on defense alone.

For example, the game ending play he made tonight, in April when it was Bonifacio over there, same play would have been scored a single cause there is not way Boni would be able to make it. With Goins at 2B, that's an out and game over.

Never said that...Just don't want to give up on him so fast

I don't think that anyone is saying that. Goins has four things going for him, he's cheap, he's can play multiple positions, he can play them average at least and he's got options. He's a better option for the 25th man than MDR was this year. Will he ever be a starter...probably not. Who knows maybe he can become a Willie Blomquist and put together a 10 plus year career as a part time guy, his ceiling really is that low though.

Yeah, we could totally lose our s*** over a 10 game sample, or we could be rational human beings and you know...not.

Pillar has a .222 BABIP. Ryan Goins has a .500 BABIP. Clearly Goins is better at "character difference-ing" the ball into holes.

BABIP? -- The kid's discipline is horrendous . He is unable to distinguish the bad from the good pitching.

Pillar = Starlin Castro '13 version.

If we had Cano in April we would probably be the same team.

Bro, Goins to hell

Anyone? He's looked pretty comfortable out there. A late bloomer? Maybe a Marco Scutaro type of player? I'm desperate here... give me some hope he has a decent chance to surprise.

Small sample size....after a month in the big leagues everybody thought Travis Snider was going to be the next Tony Gwynn also. Wait til the scouts find his weakness and if they can't exploit them or can Goins adjust.

From what LITTLE I've watched Goins play, he at least plays good D, but we all know it's SSS. I really don't think the team will have enough money to get a C, 2B and a SP so it's quite possible that they either go with a defensive-first option at C or at 2B so Goins might be in the mix. If they can't sign guys who can provide good D and O at C and 2B, I'd rather they go all defense-first at both positions. Of course, they'll probably extend JPA for 10 more years so this is all moot.

I really don't think they address 2B or C at all (or just in back up roles) unless there is another big trade where they try and plug holes all in one deal. I do agree with you though that defensive options at 2B and C who can't hit would be better than what they have, but I'm not 100% sure that A) our F.O. could identify good D or B) they care enough about defense anyway.

Especially concerning is that they may not care enough about defense. I think there are several examples of this, but I really thought they needed to move Kawasaki at 2b when Reyes returned, but they apparently hadn't seen enough of Bonifacio/Izturis to know they hurt the pitching staff.

Let's be perfectly honest, SSS or not, he's been more than good... he's been exceptional + flawless defensively. What's even more special is that he's probably never played on turf before and he's adapted instantly (FU Bonifacio).

89 wRC+ as a 25 year old in AAA

But lets pencil him as 2B next year because of SSSSSSSSSSSS in meaningless end of the season games

There not meaningless to the opposition. Stop being a f***ing douche and say s*** that's more relevant.

I think his main point was that it's small sample size, which it really is lol

I was out last night but saw most of the game. The way Goins moves to his left and his defense overall has a lot of similarities to Roberto Alomar.

We all know it's a SSSSSSSSSSSS, that's a given, but to call these games meaningless is f***ing stupid. My point is that there have been some big time MLB pitchers that he's faced so far that are trying really hard to get him out.

Well that game-ending play was certainly Alomaresque. I think he was a SS through the minors so his range could be really good.

I've gotta say, I've seen him make at least as many good plays at 2B as I remember Izturis/Bonifacio making all year so it might be a case of just how bad those 2 were.

Speaking of D, Gose NOT throwing to 3B in the 9th inning to try and get the runner going 1st to 3rd was a good decision. And was that OF assist, where Gose and Goins combined to get A-Rod at the plate, the first by a Jays' CF this year? I certainly can't remember Rasmus getting an assist.

At least Goins seems to way less holes in his swing and much better pitch recognition than Snider. I'd say there are more reasons to be optimistic about Goins than there were for Snider.

To be fair, Rasmus would of had an assist also if he made that relay throw to Goins. That play was majority Goins.

.478 BABIP

To be fair, he's racked up .7 Fld in 7 games. That's 16.2 over a full season. Yay, misusing statistics :P

He kind of reminds me of Orlando Hudson as well on defense, and definitely more like Alomar on turning the DP. It's especially impressive since he basically hasn't played on the turf before and has only played a handful of games at 2nd in the minors.

I lol'd when I read somebody saying the BABIP Gods have been good to Goins so far. This person obviously hasn't watched all his Ab's. What a complete f***ing moronic statement pulled out of thin air.

Tell me right now if you think a .478 BABIP is sustainable.

I guess I see how someone referring to BABIP as pure luck is irritating, but tell me, does that seem even remotely sustainable, lucky or not?

I will admit that its a very very small sample..but like others have suggested if they cannot land a big free agent 2b or trade for one, I'm okay with going with Goins and his D first approach. With the offensive guys we would have on our roster next year (Bautista, EE, Rasmus, Reyes, Lawrie and hopefully a good 1B/DH) he wouldn't be relied on to hit .280

Of course he won't keep that up, but he's also had a good handful of hard hit balls that were outs. Solid Ab's so far.

I was always a big Goins believer, I had him in my top 20 when noone else had him in there top 30.

I was at the game last night, and he stole 3 hits away with his glove.

Can he continue to hit like this? No, but I think he has enough bat and glove to be a quality starter at 2B in the MLB.

And that's a big IF. Not only was that a strong relay throw to Goins, but it was on Goins's glove side so he was in a good throwing position after he caught it.

We know Rasmus' throwing is pretty bad, at least that's what I see. I'm sure you'd agree that Gose hitting enough to warrant moving Rasmus to LF would be ideal, but that's another big IF.

You're that confident, even though you barely seen him play? This post may backfire on you too brah.

Aren't you the same goofball who wrote off Yu Darwish after just a couple innings of SPRING TRAINING and said he wont succeed because "he nibbles way too much" and that he'll "eventually turn into Dice K"???

How's that working out for you brah???

Seems to have backfired. Anything else? You seriously think i have a problem admitting when i'm wrong? Lol,youth.
