GNick Verified Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Think we may have something in Todd Redmond? A capable 5th starter for next year? He's pitched 2 decent games back to back against 2 good clubs.
RickyWalks Verified Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Rogers did pretty well until well...you know.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 For a s***** last place team, yes. For a team supposedly in contention, no he is not enough in the long term. So he will, in theory, not be an option for 2014.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Pretty soon he'll be gone and we'll never hear of him again.
Pete_7 Verified Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Pretty soon he'll be gone and we'll never hear of him again. I thought that about Laffey last offseason
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 How about a 5-year extension? With 2 option years of course.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Sinkerball pitcher that can't get ground balls. Those guys don't last too long. Honestly I don't know where the K-Rates are coming from but if they drop and the BABIP goes up (which it will anyway), he might be closer to a 6.00 ERA guy.

He has good fastball movement and throws a heavy ball. He doesn't throw enough strikes and has command issues. His stuff isn't his problem. He has the arm to become decent, not a star but decent. A little more command and less pitches up and he'll become better. I have no problem with him as a 5th-8th option as a starter. He's cheap. He'll be back.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Only if we can stash him in Buffalo Option situation anyone??

Not many of them stick. But some do. Woody Williams had 5 good years or more. He has a small chance to be a 4th/5th starter. If I had to guess I would say 15%. As a couple of others said stash him in Buffalo. Call him up as s*** happens. Hope he can have some success. Obviously not a guy you ink in for a rotation spot... because if he's 5th, the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th guys (who will be needed as we see time and again) are by definition worse then Redmond.
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Woody Williams is a good example of a fringe starter who elevated to being a 5th starter and then kept building on it. Thad Weber has the stuff to jump up too btw. He hasn't gotten his shot yet.

The thing with him is that he has always pitched up in the zone. Take a look this Kris Medlan quote who played with him for several years. “We always give him (grief) because he’s got the invisi-ball,” said Kris Medlen, who played with Redmond in Gwinnett this year and Double-A Mississippi in 2008. “He always goes seven or eight innings, but he throws these belt-high to belly button-high 90 mph (fastballs). If I threw them they’d get crushed but it doesn’t. Some things you can’t explain.” — David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, June 17, 2012 He gets swinging strikes on 90 MPH fastballs up in the zone...no one should get away with that but for some reason he does. Does he disguise things well? I'm not big on deception guys long term (same reason I'm not buying in on Tony Cingrani just yet) but if the Redmond K-Rates stay up this high you have no choice but to give him a Spring chance to compete for the 5th starter. I believe he has one more option so if he doesn't break with the team you get to keep him around in Buffalo.
Clojojo Verified Member Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 whats with these random shitbags that we some how call up every year the jojos, rogers, eveland, laffey i hate watching these pitchers pitch because i know because they pitch one good start this org is retarded and gives them 6-7 games leashes before holding up i get it we suck right now but back in june instead of rogers we should have traded for a pitcher. anyone who is mlb ready not these 30 year milb journeymen who have no impact in our future

Lets look at the AL playoff teams and the spot starters they have used (age in brackets): Boston - Aceves (30), Workman (24), Webster (23), Morales (28), Wright (27). Tampa - Odorizzi (23), Archer (24) Detroit - Alvarez (24) Texas - Grimm (24), Tepesch (24), Perez (22), Wolf (30), Lindholm (26) Oakland - Gray (23) Most of these guys are prospects just called up to the 40 man or guys that have roles in the pen. I realize that part of the issue is that the Jays have young pitchers on the 60 day DL, but it's also a factor that the 40 man was so poorly built. Having multiple minor league relievers on the 40 man is just plain horrible management (and should be better than Thad Weber and Mickey Storey) your minor league depth should be starters with options, if your relievers get hurt that's who steps up and takes the role. This is the one area where the Jays should be better set up for next season with Hutch, Drabek, Nolin, Redmond Jenkins as depth (hopefully) with options and Stroman waiting in the wings. Of course the Jays now have decisions on relievers as now their one swing guy that they had in the proper role (Lincoln) is out of options, so you'll have to make a decision on him.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 The f***? Why are people even talking about 5th starters? We already have Buehrle, Morrow, and Dickey for the 3,4,5 spots. There's no room for trash. Any new starter needs to be a 1 or 2. I see three 4/5 guys there, not a single #3 for a serious contender. Oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh baby. Looking forward to summer 2014. Go TFC!

havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Too soon. As in "pot shots" at the Jays? Or Noah being ready next season?

Clojojo Verified Member Posted August 24, 2013 Posted August 24, 2013 Redmond is our future! He will be the ripe age of 29 next year! Thats the youngest pitcher on our staff!
GNick Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 He must just pitch well against the Yamkees
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 He's done well for a guy with little command. If he ever finds fastball command he could surprise people. Good depth, though Thad Weber has more talent and could pass him in Spring Training. Hutch, Drabek and Nolin might have something to say too.
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Redmond is our future! He will be the ripe age of 29 next year! Thats the youngest pitcher on our staff! Honestly, he's 28 and so what? He has 6 more years in his prime. If he was 24 he'd be 30 in the same 6 years and leaving as a free agent and with 2-3 of his best years remaining. You prefer that? Not being a dick and he's not good enough for it to be a big deal but my point is valid. As long as any player is going to be at his best for 3-4 years and with the club, I don't care about his age.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Imagine if he was one of our prospects and someone would post his stats for the game: 5.2IN 3H 4BB 7SO 2ER. Pretty good numbers right there.
