z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/08/mlb-prepared-to-expand-instant-replay.html Major League Baseball is prepared to move forward with a radical expansion of instant replay, but an official announcement will be delayed until November, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The new replay policy will allow managers to ask for replay reviews in a style that is similar to the NFL's challenge system. Managers will have three challenges -- one in the first six innings of the game and two beyond that. Under the new system, which will be phased in starting next season, 89 percent of plays will be deemed reviewable. Should a manager exhaust his three challenges, the umpiring crew can still convene to conduct their own review of a questionable home run. Interesting turn of events. What do you all think?

What do you all think? Depends on how they implement it. If most of them (with obvious exceptions) are similar to tennis in/out calls where it only takes a few seconds, then I love it. If it means the umpires disappearing for 10 mins and looking at it on crappy equipment, then I dislike it.
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Yeah it all depends if game play is slowed down considerably. Just have a video replay umpire, and save us the time watching umpires walk into the dugout. Have a guy watching every play regardless of it being protested. If the right call is made within seconds, then I have no problem.
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I'm also worried that managers will protest every single close call just to make sure.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 So they gonna upgrade their replay cameras to HD?

I hope that they do it somewhat like the NHL in that they have a dedicated 'reviewer' (either in a centralized command station like the NHL, or at each game). They will be better at reviewing and I won't have to watch the fat ass umps trundle off and on the field.

I don't' know if you get it back if you win the challenge. they need professional replay guys who work with nothing else. I dont think they will do a "WAR ROOM" ala the NHL, but they could. they have the entire system already set up with MLB.tv. cameras are there and the network is there. they still need Robo umps and a balanced schedule, but this is a step in the right direction.
8D Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Ksaw. I think it would probably be best to limit those challenges down to one or two a game. Either that, or they have to have a good, efficient and quick method of reviewing calls.

MLB collaborating with broadcast teams would work really smooth. just sit some video official in the truck.
Caper Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Honestly, instant replay is pretty damn exciting. It's always fun in football. It's always weird watching on tv.... The ump and the mangeger arguing.... It's almost like a guy on the bench could pause an IPad and run out on the field to settle the argument once and for all.

What do you all think? This is the most amazing thing to ever happen to the game in my lifetime!! Don't care if game is slowed down, only that calls are right.
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 What happens if you fail a challenge? Do you lose an out....? Or does nothing happen Wouldn't be anything that extreme. 3 strikes and you're out of challenges would be my guess.
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Plus, apparently the umpires can determine what's reviewable?? So, some calls won't even count towards a teams challenge count.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 For fair/foul calls and possibly home runs, if they use the Hawkeye system then all plays that are close should automatically be reviewed since it would only take about 10 seconds. Kind of adds to the excitement too.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 You must be kidding. How can instant replay be the most exciting thing to happen in baseball in your lifetime? Most exciting change to the game. I've wanted exactly this kind of system ever since I've been watching the game.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Agreed there is tons of room to grow. I don't get the 1 until the 7th rule and 2 after, why not just give then 3 and let them choose when to use it. You just know that it's only a question of time before this rule screws a team in a big game. Why would there be less bad calls in the first 6 innings than in the last 3? It's a half-baked rule.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Why complain about something that is going to make the game 100x better? Stay classy. I'm not complaining about something that's going to make the game better. I love that they are expanding video replay. I'm just saying that the part about the splitting the replays into two groups based on inning just complicates things to no benefit. That's what's half-baked not the idea of expanding replay which is obviously a good idea. But you know don't pay attention to what I actually wrote. Just write cute phrases like Stay Classy and post Conan O'Brien gifs.

And the Conan GIF, well, I just couldn't resist... poor Gose. Why artificially limit the amount of good the replay system can do? There's no reason whatsoever for managers to only get one challenge in the first sixth innings. Plenty of calls will still get blown. I agree it's a bit odd, but over-all I'm extremely happy and could careless about that it.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 It is going to be a war room, all calls are going to be reviewed by a dedicated group in NYC. Owners still have to vote on it in November.

Either way it's still great news because it means it's closer to happening possibly even real close.

TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 This is f***ing awesome. If the manager challenges a play and his appeal is successful, it won't count on his review total for the day (meaning it won't be counted as one of his three challenge opportunities). I personally don't mind the limits on challenges because you might have a douchebag manager that would otherwise challenge every play whether right or wrong. If the manager is appealing for the right call, he'll never run out of challenges. Having two after the sixth inning gives them an extra challenge in higher leverage situations.

What do you all think? In this day and age there is no excuse for blowing calls in the field of play. Take the extra time and get it right. The game will move fast enough as long as you balls and strikes. Overall I think it is a great step forward for the MLB and will be good for the game of baseball.
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 16, 2013 Posted August 16, 2013 I learned this a few weeks ago and kept a promise to keep it quiet. A few ppl here got PMs. Anyway, the cost on this is 60-70 million dollars in camera upgrades across baseball. There is a big push toward handling things in stadium as opposed the current system of all replays going to New York and being sent back to umpires. That system is what caused the blown home run call by Angel Hernandez's crew earlier this year. That dedicated war room thing may change before the vote.

It would be so simple to have 1 guy at every stadium with access to every angle, and any bang bang play of HR call can be instantly reviewed between pitches by that ump and not slow anything down by any real measure. Look how quick TV has replays up that are conclusive? Ay close play, ump from upstairs just buzzes down to the crew chief to say he's reviewing a play, and just says the call is good or not and it gets reversed or stands and play resumes as normal.
